Touching up the shellac finish on the monster cross bike handlebars.
When the bike was built in 2012, I wrapped the handlebars in Fizik micro fiber Gel bar tape. I liked the grip and feel of that tape, but after a year it was showing signs of wear. So I applied some black cloth tape over the micro fiber tape. After a year or so, that also started showing some signs of wear.
So I decided to give the old school trick of applying shellac to cloth bar tape a try. A few coats of shellac and I liked the results. It gives a very durable finish and it's easily maintained.

Helpful video, will be shellacing my new wrap. Doing an esi silicon base layer with newbaums over top then will shellac 👌🏾

I love them. I have the 10sp BS78 shifters and can run indexed or friction mode. I run them with a RapidRise 9sp in the rear. This makes both shifters work in the same direction, inward for higher gear, outward for lower gear.

@@The4Crawler Nice! Grant Peterson would be proud 🥲👌🏾. I am 31 so grew up in an index only era unless I got my hands on an older bike. I'm going to be running friction only on a 2x11 setup and am really looking forward to the experience. I'm sure it will take some adjustment, but I'm hoping for the best. Just seems like a really beautiful and simple way to operate a bike and leave a lot of BS and compatibility issues behind.

@@theriver8524 It was likely Grant who turned me onto the RapidRise RD with the bar end shifters originally. I had purchased a set Riv's Silver Shifter barcons for my road bike and just could not get the hang of the left and right shifters working in opposite directions. The response I got from them was to get a RapidRise RD. When I built the monster cross bike, with the then RetroShift shifters, I did the same thing. I run the road bike in friction mode 3x10 and it works great. The one hidden feature of the Gevenalle type shifter is you can look at it and know what gear you're in by what angle it's at.

@@The4Crawler yeah the friction with rapid rise makes a lot of sense from a ease of use and understanding POV. I am really waiting with great anticipation for the Riv silver shifter. Great thought on the "gear indicator gauge" of a Gevenalle from the angle, makes a lot of sense! If I remember I'll comment here on using them after I get a couple rides under my belt

you can get very sick,especially if you handle food on your ride.

Never had any trouble with that. I ride with gloves and when I stop to eat, I do remove the gloves. I see no shellac residue on the gloves themselves. As well as this thread: thecabe.com/forum/threads/vintage-varnish-handlebar-wrap-procedure.145723/ "Also important Shellac is non-toxic once dried. It's even used to coat edible candies, wooden salad bowls and utensils today. Extremely versatile." Shellac also has some antibacterial properties: patents.google.com/patent/JP2010168299A/en
