I'm really enjoying these Shellac Stacks listening sessions! I've been collecting 78s since I was around 13 or so. Still collecting to this day, and I'm 23!

Glad you're enjoying the series. Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm curious...how did you get into collecting 78s?

@@ToneInGrooves I had found some in my grandpa's basement.

HOLD THE PHONE!! TATTERED COVER!! Ahhh I LOVE Denver!! I'm curious how you listen to those 78's!! I have a few record stores I go to that keep trying to give me 78's of classical music to take home, but I always pass it up and feel bad bc I was never sure of how to go about spinning them. Looks like you've got an audio techina, but I'm curious about the other equipment you use to go about it!! (needles especially and the affordability) I apologize if you've already mentioned it and or made a video about the topic already. So so cool to see you giving the 78's more attention! Loved the video!

Yeah! Went to Denver (and the Tattered Cover - multiple stores) for the first time this past February. LOVED it! So...equipment...yes, AudioTechnica LP 120. For 78s I use a Grado 78 cartridge & stylus - $90 (available online from Music Direct). To record the sound for the videos I use a Numark M6 USB mixer and a Behringer Ultravoice XM8500 microphone, output that to my Mac via USB and record the sound using Audacity software. I record the video on my iPhone and then use iMovie to put the sound and video together. The mixer is $199, the microphone is $30 - both available via Amazon. Audacity software is free! Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions or need any help with 78 related gear. It's super fun - especially if you enjoy the music. LOTS of classical 78s out there! Have fun! Skol, Jeff

Correction...Audacity is the audio software. Not Rhapsody. Still free. www.audacityteam.org

Tone In Grooves Thank you so so much!! This helps A LOT! Not many people play 78s so to see you are experienced and knowledgeable on the proper equipment to do it properly gives me something to work towards! I would love to build up a similar setup and discover more music on that format! Keep spinning and sharing bc I sure enjoy it!!

I guess no sense adding treble boost as the recordings didn't capture high tones?

Hello, Philip! Yes. Boosting treble (in my experience) while playing 78s doesn't improve sound any - it actually increases noise. Skol! Jeff
