You know, it does kind of make sense. If he took serious damage, he could go into his gem. Technically he can heal humans, so I think it's entirely possible. As for Rose...i don't think so, but i love that thought. If Greg saw rose... He'd have a breakdown probably.

great animation but in all reality steven cant poof! it showed when him and the gems including blue and yellow go to homeworld to convince white that pink diamond never got shattered. at the part where steven got his gem taken out of his body and at that moment he never poofed he looked weak and tired when that happened.

It will just make another dupe of Steven, but by using spinel's rejuvenator tool it can reboot the dupe Steven's gem and rose may come back.
