The best thing about Shelties is, they look cute in every age. As adults they are even cuter. When they look at you with their brown eyes..awwww. Just so irrisitible.

I've also got a Sable, 9 1/2 y.o., great health and going strong. I supplement with fish oil and glucosomine every day which can't hurt. Taught him to bark on command early, then incorporated NO into the linga franca and not nearly as barky as I'd originally though he'd be. Actually kind of rare nowadays. Not sure why, they're pretty darn smart and trainable, only problem is that they easily train their owners and anyone else with a snack with those eyes. I personally prefer the Sables over the tri-colors or blue merle. If everyone had one, the world would be a lot calmer place.

We absolutely agree with you. Good work on training yours on holding off barking. Definitely not an easy task. I'm curious to see how a Sheltie's temper change over time. I'm guessing a 9 year old sheltie must be even more mellow and loving =)

I am with you every love of the way. My Shelties were simply incredible!

I have to say I'm not fan of teaching them to bark on command, it's not something I've done with my boy, I think it can backfire really badly, but I've had very good success teaching him the quiet command, the key is to start quiet training from the first day and to let them know that excess barking isn't acceptable.

I had sables, and share those feelings. Once a Sheltie owner, no other breed will suffice. My little girl lived to see me laugh at her every day, even to her last one. I am on a waiting list for a gently used adult, and look forward to another one spoiling me.🤫🤭

This is old but I hope your Sheltie is still going strong. These dogs are just….the greatest. I’m on my third. Our 2nd passed away young from a tumour in the snout. It was awful. We had to put him down and it was hard knowing how young he was. But there was nothing that could be done. Sables are just so majestic. I always feel like Blue Merle’s don’t look right. They look moldy. And apparently they are prone to health issues. But I would never own another breed. Shelties are just the most loving dogs. Those eyes? Man. Excuse me while I go get some snuggle time with my baby

That's pretty funny but you gotta be real with yourself ... That wasn't a wink it was just an eye twitch. As cute as they are they aren't winking at us.

A breed that does NOT appear in the shelters or the rescues....so in a way that is good....they are NOT overbred or typically abandonded like so many other breeds and species. But it means that they are now HARD to come by. Interesting.

I have had two wonderful Sheltie rescues. It is the only way to get an adult!
@LibertyGal20102 жыл бұрын
Another way to get an adult is to look for a breeder who has a retired show dog that needs a forever home. They are always looking for good homes for these wonderful dogs!
@scottkew62782 жыл бұрын
REALLY???? I have only been to a couple of shows with hopes like that and I came up empty and was sent down a couple of cold trails. I sort of gave up . If YOU know of anyone who has an adult sheltie looking for HIS/HER FOREVER HOME...I would love a contact. THANKS! WOOF!!!!

@@scottkew6278 Try going to the AKC Marketplace where breeders are listed with puppies for sale. You might try to see if any of them have older dogs that need a forever home now that they are retired from shows and breeding. We had one for a few weeks while waiting for our puppies to be old enough to come to our home and we decided to keep him. However, he started attacking the puppies when they got to be about 4 months old, so he had to go back to the breeder 🙁 He needed to be in a one-dog home. I wish you the best!

We traveled 6.5 hours from central Minnesota to southeast Iowa to pick up our Lady. Now we're planning to make the trip again to get her new baby sister! Worth a drive, for sure! :-)
@LibertyGal20102 жыл бұрын
Look on AKC Marketplace for a reputable Breeder of Merit. You may have to travel but it’ll be worth it. We just picked up our 3 month old puppy 3 weeks ago and are loving him to pieces! Had to drive 7 hours but we feel that it was well worth the drive! The Couch Climbers’ videos are encouraging me to start doing intensive training. I’ve already taught him to ring the bells on the door handle to go outside! He isn’t quite potty trained but getting close! Good luck!
