Sheldon’s saying he’s fine being enhancement talent. He’s done his thing, won his titles, had his runs. He’s fine working programs that put other guys over. Max is really broadcasting his insecurity. I’m not saying he doesn’t have a legitimate overall point; every big wrestling company has had the issue of bringing in outside guys that eclipse their guys - it ain’t just AEW. But you also gotta take it on a wrestler-by-wrestler basis. This ain’t somebody like an Edge coming in and needing to have the top spot for carryover purposes (you don’t bury one company’s big name under your names because that’s a waste of money); this is a guy that’s a solid name but a more solid hand that has proven he can go. Kofi crossing over, maybe worry. Shelton? Nah. Just ride the wave and the money.

And it’s not just max but a lot of these younger talents are such marks for themselves.

Shelton Benjamin vs HHH on the Raw after Benjamin got drafted is as close to a perfect match as I’ve ever seen. Everything from the in-ring work, to the outside interference, to the commentary, to the crowd response and pop was flawless.

Shelton's been around long enough to know what he does and doesn't bring to the table. He's a very solid performer who may not have been used to his full potential that we as fans see, but with what he was offered and allowed to do, he was very good at it. If Max sees Shelton as a threat to "his" spot, that's on him.

Shelton, if you’re seeing this, I was the kid who would bring the Shelton 3:16 sign to OVW shows all those years ago. Thank you for being the humble, yet extremely gifted talent that you were. And being so nice to a young fan, not only at the shows, but also running into you at non wrestling events randomly around town. Shelton was and still is so damn good. In an alternate universe somewhere, Brock doesn’t leave WWE to try and play football. Then while dominating the roster, forms a faction that includes Shelton, one of his closest friends irl. This gives Shelton a mouthpiece in Heyman that makes up for his one and only shortcoming. Eventually the stable would turn on Brock, with Shelton as the new leader for Brock to fued with. This makes Shelton a multi time WWE champion in the process. Many say that Scott Hall was the best wrestler to never win a major world title. Not to take anything away from Hall, but I would put Shelton above him on that list. Did I mention that Shelton was so damn good? 🤔 😂 Seriously, had WWE truly gotten behind him, dude would be the absolute GOAT. 🐐

When you hear a young guy, talk and an old guy, you instantly realize that maturity comes with age. Not taking things so seriously, working on yourself, and wanting the best for others. Not trying to compete and just focusing on yourself. This all comes with age. And some of the young guys got a lot of growing up to do.

I'm pretty sure that Max was just in character when he said that but... AEW hires everyone and only uses a handful of wrestler's. I have no doubt that a lot of people who have an AEW contract really feel that way.

Shelton is an in-ring performer and a storyline writer. during his time in WWF/WWE. if shelton was not injury prone he would still have matches to elevate new talents.

This is why Aew will never be a big promotion but just an indie level mid show wrestling. Everyone cannot be Austin and Rock most will end up mod tier wrestlers who will job out to main event talent. So guys like Shelton Benjamin and Billy Gunn are huge assets. They are the perfect pppl to ask how to be a wrestler and maintain their conditioning and great physique and agility at an advanced age. Aew marks so far off in their heads they absolutely feel there's no requirement to industry veteran advise.
