Me and our team were sent there back in mid 1992 to install new telephone cables. We came all away from McClellan AFB, California. That place was a mind trip. Good video.👍

Wow. Did not expect to find this. Thanks for sharing the video. I was a MSgt and NCOIC of the Medical Aid Station with the 5073d Air Base Group at Shemya, May 1981 to June 1982. The two-bed patient room and the main treatment room look about the same with the exception of more modern equipment. I can ALMOST see the my desk through the open door at about time stamp 2:36. Many, many memories.

Looks like a lot of up grades since I was there the cracker box was the old blue one. The aid station was very small at the end of the building 600

Nice tour and the the theme from “Fletch” the original” movie isn’t bad either. I had heard that place was a secret, did have to learn a special hand shake.

My niece asked me about what Island i was stationed on in the Aleutians, 1980. Looks like they upgraded the recreation building....the one with all the glass. thanks for the video, brought back a lot of memories. Was rough in many ways but have a ton of good memories too. Crazy huh?

Took two trips to Shemya with DOD back on the 80’s. In route the 1st time was reading a Cussler novel. Someone was being stationed at Shemya for insubordination. Interesting place and great people worked there. Was there in late November. Was freezing and those blue foxes kept chewing through an fiber optic cable

Some things never change, but I did notice a lot of changes also. I spent a year on "The Rock" in 1980 and went back for another tour in 89-90. Believe it or not I would go back again, gladly. I live in Detroit, Mi ya see. Nuff said.

84-85.USAF. Fishin was good when the wind didn't blow you off the dock. I would look out my room window, if the waves were breaking over the dock, i'd find something else to do. Oh yeah, and sea lions don't like to be kicked, and if you leave anything laying around the foxes will let you know they were there. Down on the beach/rocks, by the washed up barge, I got close and personal with a pod of orcas. Lots of adventures there, like trying to cross the street for dinner in 100+ mph winds, or wandering into a uxo field. Beach combing, i still have that sperm whale tooth. Limpets made good bait on a jig for the greenling cod and flounder.The lakes had some nice dolly vardon and kokanee. Lots and lots of fresh air.Even got into some halibut off the dock. Memories. Thanks for the video.

I rode a C-124 out the chain to SHEMYA in 1966 and spent 18 months out there (late 1966, 1967 & and a little of "68 mostly). The building pictured in a lot of parts of this video was called the "Composite" and it was (later replaced by a newer building) where pretty much EVERYONE lived while on the island---Air Force, Army, Civilians and I think thee were even a few Navy guys out there, too, but not sure of that. No women in those years were stationed out there and the only women we saw was once in a while when the civilian airline landed, offloaded and left! We just MIGHT get a glimpse of the stewardesses while the aircraft was on the ground!!

Never heard of that tradition, I know they used to dig into the huge bottle dump to try and find WWII era bottles that were worth a fortune.... the military felt it was not worth the money to ship them back to destroy or recycle them so they buried them on the island.... along with other very expensive hardware...one of the wing commander's inspections was coming up... so they buried a bunch of equipment that was still on inventory rather than ship it back or try to explain why they had not gotten rid of it by 1981 when I was there. Or so the rumor goes... never can tell what actually happened, just know there were tons of parts buried in that million dollar pile.

Heard stories of this place when my dad went. Is the Cobra Dane still active???
@zedwpd
@zedwpd Жыл бұрын
Yes it is. The Cobra Dane radar has been upgraded to be integrated in the Missile Defenses Agency's (MDA) Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). The improvement includes midcourse BMDS sensor coverage by providing acquisition, tracking, object classification, and data that can be used for cueing, launch of interceptor missiles, and course updates of interceptors while retaining the site's legacy intelligence and space track missions. The Space Force maintains responsibility for the Cobra Dane radar operations, maintenance, and sustainment.
