Gym Leaders are some of the most powerful trainers in the Pokémon world and are the main hurdles a trainer most overcome throughout their journey. But the reality is that many of them are underwhelming, even during their post-game fights. To showcase what a Gym Leader should truly be, today I'm starting a series where I build a "perfect" gym leader for every type in the game! A team that's not only challenging, but one that represents the type better than their in-game teams could ever hope to.

I’d recommend covering the Poison Type next. Partly because I started on my own remake of Emerald Gyms and I though replacing the Iconic Fire-Type gym with a Poison-Type gym would good idea. My though behind the Poison-Type is that it’s generally disliked. From it’s implication, effects on our own Pokémon, and the design of the Pokémon; Poison-Types are considered “bad”. My idea is to reverse that idea by showing that while some are created from Human waste(Grimer/Muk, Koffing/Wheezing, and Gulpin/Swallot) that some are actually naturally occurring(Zubat line, Seviper, Tentacool/Tentacruel). My Poison-Type gym would actually feature all kinds of trainers: Young, Old, New, Experts, Hikers, Swimmers. The point was that the gym trainers were regular people working at clearing the perception of Poison-Type Pokémon. With the Gym Leader being the founder of the effort; being an older gentleman with lots of experience to contrast RSE’s Flanery who’s young and starts not knowing her place. Anyways, this was my reason for nominating Poison-Types for the Next Video. Plus I wanted to see a comment in video referencing all the Bug-Types who have Poison-Type moves.

I'll never forget when GF decided to add a whole new freaking type to solve the Dark-Ghost zero weaknesses problem, rather than slightly improving the Bug type by simply making it neutral against Ghost, which for the life of me I can't understand (seriously, for what kind of lore reason should ghosts resist insects??)
@sephikong8323
@sephikong8323 Ай бұрын
Fairy weren't made solely to deal with that one issue but that of Dark, Dragon and Fighting types becoming REALLY strong in the last 2 generation to be the point of being problematic Which is extremely weird then that they also made Fairy be resistant to Bug. I can't understand it. Personally I would have had the two types be neutral to each other, or better yet have Bug be SE against Fairy as if they are the Fae's natural predators (and have Ice be resistant to Fairy for game balance and also, I think it thematically works well, both because Ice looks to be the "anti magic" type with this set up and also because Fairy use a lot of light based attacks and Ice is very good at deflecting light)

I'm pretty sure that Fairy was added because because people were stacking dragon types on their teams who basically didn't have counters outside of other dragon types. Because at the time ice types sucked so it was kinda like gen1 with bug types being too weak to keep psychic types in check.

Fairy was more so made to deal with the Dragons than Dark/Ghost types (since they were the ones causing actual problems, in fact I’m pretty sure Sableye and Spiritomb never did much in competitive play in the first place), Dark and Fighting types were also quite good so they were also added on. Do agree it’s dumb that Fairy resists Bug though, the only reason I can think of is probably U-Turn.

“Who would you use on a Bug-type team?” You pretty much hit the nail on the head with your picks, I have nothing to change…except Shedinja. It’s not a bad pick, but it’s a bit of a risk. I think what I would do instead is put Araquanid in its spot and make the lead something fast that can also set up a hazard, like Ribombee. A Ribombee with Pollen Puff (doubles) / Bug Buzz (singles), Alluring Voice (doubles) / Moonblast (singles), Sticky Web, and Protect with a Focus Sash and Shield Dust would make for an interesting lead, all things considered.
@shepskydad

Ribombee was one of the ones I really wanted to fit on the team. It would have been great at a fast Special Attacker, but I had too many good options… and Shedinja lol
@Tomy_Lightning
@Tomy_Lightning Ай бұрын
Shedinja in a bug gym is the dumbest thing because there's a guarantee that the challenger will bring multiple super-effective dark, ghost, fire, flying and rock especially those last 3 and with all of them either being popular or easy to obtain types in playthroughs (fire types can be your starter, flying&rock types can be obtained super early and for dark&ghost it depends on the game) so shedinja is literally a waste of space.
@justinalicea1590
@justinalicea1590 Ай бұрын
@@shepskydad Another point against Shedinja taking up a team slot is one of your own arguments: Araquanid to handle Fire types. Kind of harder to swallow when it is sent out as a lead Pokémon, and you're prepared to sacrifice its anti-Fire type status for the potential Uno Reverse Card of Mirror Coat. So having Araquanid be a middle Pokémon would help a lot.
@khalilli6613
@khalilli6613 Ай бұрын
shedinja is also a hard win condition on any team it's on. if you deal with all the types that threaten it and shedinja is your last pokemon, it doesn't really matter how many pokemon your opponent has the fight is just over. shedinja is always on a team under the assumption your opponent doesn't know you have it, since most people aren't looking up what gym leaders are using during their first playthroughs shedinja could potential give players a ton of grief

@@Tomy_Lightning "If they are properly prepared" is important here, so what if it makes the gym leader easier to beat for the smart trainers. If someone walks into the gym with tons of rock/flying/water types as well as stealth rocks then they did their prep and deserve it. If someone doesn't have enough prep and tries to brute force their way through with just strong STAB or high levels then shedinja will bring them a rude awakening. This is a gym leader team not a competitive monotype team.

@eclipse5708
@eclipse5708 Ай бұрын
No to the latter, I think they should've just been neutral to each other. Fairy has the right weaknesses, Poison and Steel had the most useless type advantages in the game and really needed to be the exclusive weaknesses for Fairy to make themselves useful. Poison's only weakness was Grass and there's 4 other types good against it which offer even more type advantages. Meanwhile Steel is only good against Rock and Ice, which also have a multitude of weaknesses including Fighting which covers both plus more. Bug's type advantages aren't great either but at least they have a fairly unique combination of them that could make them useful in certain circumstances (primarily for Grass/Psychic, Grass/Dark, and Psychic/Dark types). But with Poison and Steel, all of their weaknesses are better covered by other types. Why use a Poison type against Grass rather than a Fire, Flying, Ice, or yes, a Bug type (would also be very bad for Grass/Fairy as that would give it 2 quad weaknesses and not really help Poison as much)? Why use a Steel type against Rock and Ice rather than a Fighting type or a combination of other more useful types like Fire, Ground, or Water types? Poison and Steel really needed an offensive niche, Fairy was the perfect opportunity to give them one.

You know, you could give a Bug type Gym Leader Flygon anyway. If Lance's "Not all dragons are Dragon type" logic applies to him, then it should apply to every type specialist. And Flygon may not be a Bug type, but it's undoubtedly a bug. I even considered it for my Monotype Bug Team in Pokémon Sapphire, but I'm content with the Pokémon I have now so I decided to not get one in the end.

Araquanid, Scizor, Volcarona: 100% agree Heracross is also a definitely good choice, no complaints there For the other two options, here's what I would do: The team lacks speed outside of Sticky Web support, so I'd say Galvantula would be a good choice over Vikavolt. It also gets Sticky Web so you could even have it as a lead, set up webs, and either U-Turn OR Volt Switch out, and add in Compound Eyes Thunder for good measure (this is just a bit weaker than Vikavolt's Thunderbolt). All off of 108 speed, with Compound Eyes being another Bug-type exclusive. I've also run Araquanid as a sticky web pokemon before. With a good matchup and passive healing, it's a good sticky web user. But on a mono-bug team, it's your one and only answer to fire types and a good answer to rocks. I think it's best to leave that job to it, with it maybe being a backup Sticky Web user. Bug types in general are very fragile, meaning Shedinja is definitely a representative of that but maybe it does too good of a job of being a liability. I personally like your Shuckle set better. Either it or Araquanid would use Toxic as you don't need three Sticky Web users. My own honorary mention goes to Lokix and Yanmega, as half of the Tinted Lens users are Bug-type, and one of these Pokemon could go into the team over Heracross. Tinted Lens is also important to the team to cover all of the types that resist Bug that you mentioned.

Yeah I definitely agree here, I did just see a Agility boosted Vikavolt grab some interesting kills, but Galvantula having a somewhat better ability & naturally high speed I’d say is worth looking into Same with the Tinted lense point! I’m a little sour on flame/toxic orb strategies, & with the amount of resistances bugs have it’s fairly likely the opponent would have a few checks already, a Tinted lense mon over Heracross is definitely a good choice

I think that Forretress was definitely overlooked here. With so many pivots using switch moves, being able to switch into a reliable wall is definitely appreciated. Forretress also has access to spikes, rapid spin, AND stealth rock, letting you get in the important entry hazards on one mon, and utilise it for other things than just dealing with hazards. With a rapid spinner, you could also deal with stealth rock, giving Volcarona support, and letting it choose life orb or a gem, instead of boots.

If you wanted to be INCREDIBLY evil what you could do is make a Baton Pass team leading with Ninjask to get speed boosts, set up a bunch of and defensive boosts with moves like Bulk Up to ensure the mon that sets up Swords Dances can do so, then pass all of these boosts to Shedinja and he can go on an absolute TEAR

If you wanted to make a gym team for gen 9 like this, Lurantis could make for an interesting ace, with tera bug Leaf storm plus pollen puff. Speaking of pollen puff this gym battle could be made tougher it was a double battle, in which the gym leader could have their team be made of 2-3 offensive sweepers, paired up with supports with moves like sticky web, pollen puff, first Impression, and u-turn, as well as other good support moves.

I would love to see a poison type team. It's by far my most favorite type of the entire series, just because it's built around the concept of slowly but steadily letting the opponent widdle away, whilst you are either pummeling them to a pulp or just waiting till all of their joy is gone.

Im glad you did Bug Type this video. Its my favorite type. You even have 3 of my faves on here Heracross, Vikavolt, and Scizor (favorite Pokemon). The other two being Ninjask (somehow both cute and cool looking, BST be damned) and Leavanny (mad respect for it because somehow it was my MVP during a ROM hack I played). Can't wait to see which is the next type you do this for.

Yeah, I was hoping it'd be a little buggier. I like the idea of the volt-turn spamming core, but it's a shame he didn't pair it with any first impression users. I'd definitely throw in Golisopod (and maybe a second first impression user like Durant, but then we'd be really fire weak, so maybe not that). Getting constantly faked out and then switched out on would give the feeling of swatting at bugs that you can't reach (emergency exit helps with this too). And someone has to have bug bite. Sure, there's no guarantee that the player will have berries, but if they do they'll get the annoying buggy experience of having their food eaten in front of them.

Scizor, Shedinja, and Volcarona are great choices, but I'd give Scizor a different item to take advantage of U-Turn a bit better, and allow Swords Dance. I'd probably add a status effect mon, I'd probably remove Heracross because there are already three physical mons to put a Compound Eyes Butterfree with Poison Powder, Stun Spore, Giga Drain, and Substitute holding the blunder policy just in case or maybe just a healing item. (this would be the second slot for setup, representing the weak but statusy side of the Bug type while bridging the speed gap with stun spore and wearing the team down once it gets going. Poison Powder and Substitute could be replaced but I'm not sure what with). Can't wait to see you cover the other types!
@Invisifly2
@Invisifly2 27 күн бұрын
14:06 - I still think including a source of hazard removal would be a solid idea. While rewarding the player for coming in prepared is nice, I think teaching them the importance of not relying on a single move to be a better idea. This would also free up your item on Volcarona, or you could keep the boots just to be extra safe. Now your solid switching core can actually do its thing, and occasionally do cheeky stuff like swap shedninja into an attack it'll be immune to. I consider one of the jobs of a gym leader to be teaching you strategy as you progress. Which is one they usually fall short of, sadly. You should expect your opponents to be aware of their biggest weaknesses and prepared for them. Just winning off of one move isn't really teaching anything more than waltzing into a rock gym and spamming hydro-pump.

This is absolutely being said partially due to my love for it, but Lokix on a bug team, especially for a gym leader, is wonderful due to one combination of a move and a (hidden) ability: First Impression and Tinted Lens. Imagine the fear that could be struck into the soul of some kid with a fast rock type. They can't get hit hard, nor for neutral by most things. Then boom, priority stab 90 power move that ignores the resistance comes in to rock their world

Great team! I’d personally choose Haydunn’s Vikavolt build: Item: Throat spray - Agility - Bug Buzz - Thunderbolt - Volt Switch The agility covers the speed deficit, Bug Buzz triggers the Throat Spray for a +1 SpA, and then you have a semi fast SpA sweeper with ability to pivot out of situations easily. Pretty nifty!

I am obsessed with bug types and always run a mono-bug squad I was really impressed by how perfectly you sumarised what makes bugs good, its all about the bringing your opponent down and then boosting yourseld up. Problem is despite saying this you took 5 all round good fighting bugs and 1 whos a gimmick and dies to weathet conditions, burn, poison, entry hazards or super effective moves. Shuckle to me is an S tier bug and your moveset on him was great! I'd personally have gone Infestation, Toxic, Power Split and rest. Araquanid / Golisopod - Preference Scizor / Escavilier - Normally a preference but for a gym leader I'd lean Scizor Volcarona is the big bad Vikavolt has unfortunately made Galvantula essentially obsolete but both are fun I'd probs take something speedy over Heracross, could be Ninjask, Scolopede or Yanmega. Or a Quiver dance sleeper like Vivillion, Butterfree or Venomoth. Overall great video!

Great team composition. However, you can still sweep it with salamence with wide lens and stone edge. Intimidate aquaranid, set up dragon dance, spam stone edge. Use fire fang on scissor and whatever is the best flying stab for salamence on heracross Or instead of flying stab, you could use roost to heal up and set up more on shedinja. Healing up would be better to not get killed by scissor's bullet punch. You could even forgo fire fang and use substitute and roost on shedinja. Specially if it tries sucker punch. After one dragon dance it will outspeed and ko Volcarona. If you dont trust wide lens, you can try hone claws but then you speed tie with volcarona. Dragonite could also work similarly. Maybe. All the same, amazing video!

I really like the concept of the team and it’s really well made, but as an avid bug type defender, I have a few small critiques: 1: The roost set is probably a much better idea on Scizor with bullet punch for it’s main attack and U-turn for getting out quickly 2: Araquanid works way better as a middle Pokemon for the aforementioned fire resist 3: Psychic probably isn’t needed on Volcarona and could be replace with Giga drain to deal with rock types and get some healing too Other than these ideas, this was a really well made team, and represents the type really well

I mean, if Speed is a problem, then you could also consider Yanmega, who can have Speed Boost for an Ability, and run STAB Bug Buzz and Air Slash while potentially giving the middle finger to any Rock-Types with Sunny Day/Solarbeam, or you could run Detect to guarantee a +1 Speed Boost, and Tailwind to help your slower partners pick up the pace. It could also run Tinted Lens to ignore "Not Very Effective" damage.
