A trip up to the Somerset town of Shepton Mallet to visit the famous 400 year old Prison on Christmas Eve of 2023, after learning that it might be closing early 2024 due to a breakdown in relations with the Co Owners of the site.
Shepton Mallet Prison has been on our to do list for a while ever since seeing it documented on the TV by Michael Portillo in one of his TV programmes, which showed you around virtually a lot of the place and some places that the public don't get to see, such as the Prison workshops building which you pass when you are walking down the road towards the Prison, this more modern building was constructed in the 70's period and offered a Library, various classrooms, a mock house so that the inmates could learn a trade such as decorating prior to their release along with other trades, the workshop building has an overhead enclosed walkway which connects to the Prison yard and is now used for hiring and for Escape room challenges, amongst other leisure pursuits.
Featured in Paranormal Lockdown UK Series created Nick Groff along with paranormal researcher Katrina Weidman.
It also featured in the Michael Portillo's Hidden History of Britain, and also an episode of the BBC drama series Casualty, and most recently the Crime drama series by ITV Des, a British three-part television drama miniseries, based on the 1983 arrest of Scottish serial killer Dennis Nilsen.
