Pastured Pigs - Managing Boar Piglets
Today we are moving our boar piglets out of their pen and onto a pasture paddock. These boars have been in the pen for a while now and we are moving them in the opposite direction from the gilts. Soon the gilts will start to come into heat and we want the boars a good distance away from them so they don't breed before we are ready for them to do so.
We want our gilts to be bigger and put on some additional weight before becoming pregnant.
Our pigs are a berkshire/duroc cross mix and do very well on pasture and on our farm.

Very informative. My wife and I are both very interested. We are learning a TON of new information thanks to people like you who are passionate about sharing your experiences and thoughts. We recently bought 4 acres of ag zoned tropical rainforest near Hilo HI and are excited about moving and starting a rental property and sustainable farm enterprise. Many thanks 🌈😃🤙

Occasionally feeding pigs fermented is good practice.. if you're mixing in buckets take a little out of some already fermented and place in helps proEach new batch kinda like sourdough bread it's speeds up the process

You do a lot of pasture moving, what do you about your ground rod. Do you replace it every move? Pull it out of the ground and move it each time?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. I just use a green t-post that we pull and move each time. We drive it about 18 inches in the ground. Works fine as long as we don't get super dry.

Would using those green gates like you have in the past help alleviate those long paddock moves?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. They will get more used to it the more they move. We've been SO wet around here that we've not moved very much to try and prevent disturbing more ground than we have to and creating more mud. Our big gilts and sows know exactly what to do but they have lots of practice. Great question.

You say that you want to get more weight on the gilts before you let them breed, is there an approximate age were you would feel safe letting them breed and the same for the boers? Thank you
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Typically around the 6-7 month range. They will weigh about 325lbs and be about 80% of their full grown size.

Usally let gilts cycle twice before breeding kinda hit or miss breeding on their first cycle

Are you going to let all the boar’s breed the guilts or you going to let like just Hamlet this time and an other next time ? Good job. Looks like Dave is working out good . Todd
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
We will run the boars in pairs. Lester and Earl will be a pair and Jack and Hamlet will be another. 2 boars will do a better job of covering sows/gilts when they are in groups like ours.

@@SheratonParkFarms do they have a tendency to fight when run in pairs ? Or since they come into heat at once it doesn’t matter , just one big free for all ? Or are u figuring it out like me ?
