Santa Monica, June 11, 2024: Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies and Metro Armed Security conducted a comprehensive sweep of the Metro train system today, with a special focus on the downtown Santa Monica Station. This daily operation aims to ensure passenger welfare and uphold public safety standards.
During the sweep, a Sheriff's Deputy and his K9 partner patrolled the metro searching for explosives. The K9, trained to detect high explosives, can identify body-worn explosives and concealed firearms from a distance of around 50 yards.
At the downtown Santa Monica Station, Metro Ambassadors and the Metro Outreach Team were present, offering outreach and assistance to riders.
Metro Ambassadors support riders on Metro buses, trains, and stations, connecting them to resources and reporting maintenance and safety concerns. They are part of a multilayer plan to improve public safety, which includes security and law enforcement, homeless and mental health outreach workers, and cleaning crews.
Metro Homeless Outreach Teams engage with unhoused riders on buses, trains, and stations, connecting them to resources. These teams are also part of the multilayer safety improvement plan.
The downtown Santa Monica Station serves as the terminal stop for the Metro line, making it crucial for authorities to ensure all passengers exit the train upon reaching its final destination and re-tap to continue on the train. This measure addresses reports of some unhoused individuals using the train as a makeshift shelter, remaining on board for extended periods and even sleeping onboard.
Sheriff's Deputies and Metro Security at the downtown Santa Monica Station combine security duties with passenger welfare checks. Their responsibilities include monitoring trains and platforms, enforcing the code of conduct, tackling fare evasion, and upholding the rule of law to ensure safety and security for all passengers.
The increased law enforcement presence at the station is part of a broader effort to address concerns related to criminal activity, instill a sense of safety among commuters, and ultimately restore confidence in the Metro system. This proactive approach is designed to deter criminal behavior and encourage ridership without fear.
Authorities urge passengers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or unsafe situations promptly. In emergencies, passengers should dial 9-1-1. For non-emergency security concerns, passengers can reach security personnel at 888.950.7233. Additionally, passengers can use the train intercom or station intercoms, marked by red signs on station platforms, to alert Metro staff to any incidents.
The heightened security measures underscore the commitment of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies to ensure a safe and secure travel experience for all Metro passengers, with a renewed focus on the downtown Santa Monica Station as a key point in the transit system.
E Line service hours are from approximately 4:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. daily. Trains operate every 8 minutes during peak hours, Monday to Friday. During midday on weekdays and weekends, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., trains run every 10 minutes. Night and early morning service is approximately every 20 minutes daily.

I wish they would do this on the Red line as well!! Especially on the weekends when people are sleeping everywhere, sometimes taking up 3 seats. Of course there is worse, especially at my station MacArthur Park. OmG!

I used that station to go to Langer's deli and it was fine. No issues at the station. It was clean, music playing, and no weird smells. The only thing I saw were all the street vendors outside the station, but they were selling stuff. Though I'm surprised they are allowed to setup there considering the plaza area around the station is Metro property.

Maybe that is not what their assignment is to do. They are there to look for explosives, remove the homeless from the trains, and ensure no major crime is happening. LA Metro has its own officers to deal with non-paying riders by checking phones/tap cards.

I ride Metro everyday and there's a lot of non paying passengers riding who are not homeless. The announcement says to "tap with pride" urging riders to pay to keep the trains running more efficiently. They simply don't have the personal to check every rider all of the time, so "tap with pride" to keep the service running more efficiently.

This is ABSOLUTELY ABSURD that they are only focusing on and filming primarily at the Santa Monica's train platform and not the 7th Street Metro Center, the platforms on the REDLINE, the platforms on the SANTA MONICA LINE itself , etc, etc.,etc. There is nothing but the same if not more transients carrying weapons on all the other platforms and train stations besides Santa Monica on a daily basis.

The terminus makes the most sense to get people off because it is easier to control. The trains are stopped. They are trying to tackle the problem of people riding the trains all day. This is a start.

I wouldn't describe it as strict control. It's simply enforcing the rules and regulations of public transit that passengers agree to abide by when using a publicly run transit system. It's not your private vehicle.

To have a civilized society, you need rules. The rules need to be enforced, or you no longer have a civilized society. We see civilized society getting a little less civilized in places that don't hold the rule breakers/criminals accountable for breaking the rules.

Dude at 11:30 that’s BS. My field of work i have to tell people to move along and I do it politely and 9/10 times there response is “fk you I’ll move when I’m ready” . So even before I approach the situation I’m prepared for a confrontation because that’s usually what they want, and they always lose. So when your asked the first time to move now, mfka move!

@HectorBan
@HectorBan Ай бұрын
Well it's not a criminal offense to be homeless unlike other states like Virginia. Which means cops can't intervene if it's a civil matter unless theirs a city ordinance that prohibits outside encampment. Also that's the job of Santa Monica police. The sheriff deals with big crimes they looking for guns or gangs.
@mrxman581

As the previous commentor said, it's different if there is an ordinance against camping in a certain area. That's not allowed on the beach in LA either.
