Can you imagine the terror of having to look at Mr. G&W in 3D as his opponent? He looks like he's a half second away from unhinging his jaw and unleashing some kind of eldritch horror

If you saw him in 3D in that side-facing pose you wouldn't even be able to tell what he's doing 90% of the time. Like, did he just pull out a bomb or a bell? Smash characters rely entirely on the eyes of their player!

Ganondorf's model was taken directly from the Spaceworld 2000 Gamecube demo, and he "talked" to Link in that demo, seems like Ganon having a modeled mouth in Melee may be further showing where his model came from.

Interesting fact about the character designs: when Sakurai was developing Super Smash Bros Melee The characters didn't make their appearance on the GameCube yet. So he took the designs from the N64 era and gave them a realism look. My favorite design is the Melee Mario one

Something not included: Ness' lowpoly model is loaded underneath his normal model at all time. You can see the pointiness of his lowpoly shoes poking thru his normal shoes if you look closely on any color Ness except red....because the low poly model of red Ness has no feet!
@DootNootem
@DootNootem 2 жыл бұрын
Their entire low poly models aren't constantly active. Neutral Ness lacks low-poly feet, and his universal costume model visibility table doesn't have an entry for the remaining costumes' low-poly feet, therefore the game renders them all the time! Although the characters' full models are in fact loaded during gameplay, this table is used to tell which parts of the model are to be rendered as low-poly or high-poly. If there are any undefined objects, the engine renders them all the time.

Just a guess, but all the unseen details in the trophies (GCN model, Olimar's nose, Luigi's hair) are probably there because their trophies started out as their intended use (ie: GCN tech demo, Pikmin, and Luigi's Mansion), only edited to preserve on polygons. Olimar's nose sticks out to me, because that patch seems like it might be the anchor point for bouncing effects for his Pikmin animation move set. Luigi's head was fully modeled in Luigi's Mansion for the times that he takes his hat off, and the GCN was probably just used in renders.

Back in the day, one of my friends pointed out that Jigglypuff's eyes are always open in its reflection (in Fountain of Dreams), even while it's sleeping. After looking more, we figured out that this was because the reflections were all based on low-poly models, though it's really hard to see, unless you play in Giant Melee with the items set so it spawns lots of mushrooms. These days, thanks to emulation, you can play in 4K to get crisp reflections, even on a low-res screen.

Trophies are so cool, as are things like Adventure Mode. I understand completely why Ultimate went with stickers instead of trophies, but I kinda wish they could've still had 'em. At least I can enjoy them in 3D in Smash 4 3DS. This was a great episode. Well done! :)

I've spent hours doing this in Dolphin and looking at Melee from every angle. I didn't know about the Melee logo being in the beginning of the credits though! Nice find!! Also for the Daisy eye bit of trivia, it was actually only present in the 1.00 version of the game, and isn't present in the 1.01 or 1.02 versions of the game, nor the 1.03 PAL release. Also for Great Bay, it didn't make the external wall invisible. Instead characters could enter in through a door and you can see them through the external window. There's gameplay footage from Spaceworld 2001 that shows how it would have played out. All of this information can be seen in my documentary on the development of Super Smash Bros. Melee called Elevated. Cheers!

On Luigi's Hair: Given that Luigi's Mansion and Melee are both GameCube titles, they probably just took the real detailed luigi model for cutscenes and ported it. When Luigi first enters the mansion and gets scared by a ghost, his hat pops off to show his hair standing on end for a quick gag, and that's probably just still left in the model.

The reason for the low poly models isn't to save on resources, in fact it uses MORE resources for the extra model and texture. They're used because they can be drawn faster to keep the frame rate high. Low poly models take up more memory because you need to have both of them loaded at all times to switch back and forth. They also need a new texture because the original won't map onto the low poly one correctly. For example, Mario's entire face with mustache could be one rectangle on a low poly texture, but the real model has the mustache texture and eye textures separated out in different parts of the texture to allow for more detail or reuse. Each polygon has to be transformed from 3d space into 2d screen space, and if it's within and facing the camera its pixels are drawn. Less polygons means this can be done faster and you can keep the frame rate up.
