My Sis & I walked from her house at the back of Inverkip through the fields and under the railway line to moorhouse Road where we passed a stunning old Roman Bridge over the Kip water.
And then headed up the Loch Thom road and then at the bad bend cut down the steep grassy slope to get to the Shielhill Cave.
It's a stunning sight, I never knew it existed until my Sis told me about it.
It's a cave underneath a huge overhanging rock that was modified in the 1930's, it's been called the smugglers or pirates cave.
It has hooks in the roof that looks as though folk hang their hammocks from them, a fireplace looks as if it's being built, plenty of old carvings in the wall to.
Very interesting to see.

Thanks. It made me emotional to see the Cave. My grandad Paddy Maxwell was one of the men who made the Cave into a place where families could go for a holiday. It got them away from the struggles of life, and back to nature. They would walk from Gibshill to get there. I have photos of them at the Cave. Thanks again.

@@fevertree1957 it's on the road up to Cornalees, at a tight bend. Although at the moment, the road is closed as the carriageway is badly cracked

I’m sure the front was more closed than that. I’m sure the wall covered more of the cave at one point.

I hadn't heard of the place despite coming from Greenock and going up the cut many many times. I looked into it online, some incredible photos of the place from years ago

I've thought about going here for years but still not done it. I'm sure Elephant's Graveyard was filmed here in the 70's starring Billy Connolly.

Many thanks mate, hope you have an idea where it is from the video. It's on the very sharp bend heading up to Cornalees, and then you'll see a faint path that will take you to the cave. It's a stunning sight. Have a great day🤟
