Sure is! These 13 Speed gearboxes are very standard here, and I think the best. An 18 speed is a step up, and I love them, but they are really only necessary in mountains, or hauling logs out of the bush etc. I do split low range sometimes just because I like the sound of a close ratio split. Music to my ears.

Yes, I know what you're talking about. I've driven many Mack trucks, all the way back to the B Model Mack with the 5 X 3 double stick transmission. They're lots of fun, but ya' , give me a good Freightliner any-day. Right now I'm driving a Classic Freightliner with a Detroit and 13 speed. My only complaint on this truck is the blind spot on the right side. Sadly those fancy new mirrors are not fully adjustable, and Toyotas can hide on the right side. A right fender mirror would fix that real quick.

Yes indeed, it is hustle free, and also hassle free. I recommend new drivers punch the clutch just a couple of inches (partial clutch) when they are getting started in the profession. After you have gained skill and confidence you will rarely need to shift with the clutch. If you know what you are doing it is not hard at all.

Hustle free shifting is the best!

I own a trucking company. I drove for several years then started hiring drivers but recently wanted to buy another truck for me to drive. The truck I am considering is a 13 speed. I have driven 13 and 18 before but it’s been a while. You wouldn’t think you would forget but it happens. The other day I tried to back one of my trucks out of a TA shop without a trailer and turned the steering wheel the wrong way. I had to reposition which is quite embarrassing after saying I own the company. The female shop manager looked at me like “another lying truck driver.” She even looked away like she didn’t see. Quite embarrassing. So, if I buy this new truck, I want to at least get it off their yard without looking like the fool.

@@jonathanking6546 Oops! It happens to the best of us. Last knight I came back from Pickle Lake, ON. and after a 15 hour shift, took the easiest spot to back my trailer. Another guy wanted that spot, but I wouldn't move to the harder blind spot location, because I was tired, and did not want to be embarrassed fighting to get in a tight blind back. It happens... ;)

I downshift any gear with the Jakes on. I do not use the clutch when downshifting. Just remember to shut the Jakes off when shifting up. Up shifts with the Jakes on will screw your shifts up real bad and reck stuff. I am unclear why downshifting with the Jakes on is an issue with you. Please elaborate.

@@SternDrive I am new driver with permit training for my CDL test. I didn’t know if you had advice to help me learn the downshifting better with Jakes On. I am still struggling with down shifting and missing the gears with Jake On

@@justinsuggs4309 The Jakes have no bearing on downshifts because they are "off" when you have your foot on the throttle. The Jakes will only come on when you take your foot off of the throttle. Sure, by all means down shift with the Jakes on. Just shut them off when up shifting.

Just shift it! Jakes on while downshifting is never a problem. Up shifting with Jakes on most trucks is a no no. Unless you drive a truck with a modern Cummins Engine with delay on the Jakes. In that case you can get away with shifting up or down with the Jakes on. Great fun!

Jon Williams Glad you asked. It is called "rev matching" and if you match the RPM with your road speed the transmission will go into gear with one finger and no clutch. If you do not rev match, you can double clutch or triple clutch and it will just grind. So bottom line is, it does not matter if you use the clutch or not, if you rev match. Watch the video and you will see what we are are talking about.

I sometimes only need a half a gear downshift, so I will split. But if you have low RPM already you can drop a whole gear. Sometimes I will drop from 12th to 9th. To do that your RPM needs to be below 1,000 RPM. Let me know how it goes.

No, he got a special permit in North Dakota to carry that load. Normally not that much. Although last summer and winter he was running Super B flat decks and hauling steel, so it was away more than 80. A couple of summers ago his rear load gauge malfunctioned and he was away over on the trailer. He was stopped for a routine check. They got him on an air leak and made him fix it right away. They forgot to get out the portable scales. He dodged a bullet!

I try not to "outlaw" but sometimes stuff happens. The most I've had to pay at the scales was $1,400 , and that was not my fault. My boss loaded my end dump. I told him that it looked away over on the trailer. He said the scales were closed. They were not. Truckers nightmare.
