Hi Everyone,
Welcome to a special BONUS episode in the Porsche 356C series. Today we fix that destroyed shift rod seal! We ran into a big surprise with the shaft itself and the reason it was bad in the first place.
This is the amazing seal puller tool: amzn.to/34XosaY
It will save you HOURS and won't damage the shaft like this car's was...
This is the seal: www.autohausaz.com/pn/GR-9001...

Thank you for the informative Video. Used it to do same on my 79SC 915 transmission. I didn't have the fancy seal removal tool, a straight poke on an angle worked. For those with a 915, keep at it, if you get it on the right angle with a straight poke will come right out, i took out the edge and thought i was done at first. Also scissor or some type of lift is essential for this job. Cheers!

Thanks again for posting a great video. I used this tool on a 71 911T not as much space but still able to get it out with the tool, it gave me a hard time as I was being too gentle, ensure you use the tool all the way to grab the full bushing, I was only gabbing the edge of it. It will take some time to get the leverage right ! Keep at it

Well done video. As someone who does this for a living, I'm a little bummed you're doing such a good job of demystifying these tasks :P In this particular case I don't think you needed the JB weld as the filing and sanding you did was most likely adequate and the affected area didn't look like it would rub on the seal after installed. Lastly, I see you like tools and you fast forwarded over the safety wire part of securing the grub screw. Get a set of safety wire pliers. You'll love 'em
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! There was still a pretty deep grove in that shaft even after all that work... It might not have eaten through the seal, but I'm pretty sure it would still leak. Anyway, the JB Weld seems to have done the trick!

If you continue with a leak due to someone previously using a Vice Grip and gouging the shaft get your shaft redone by Vic Skirmants. Just remove the nose to get the shaft out. As a Bonus Vic will weld the set where it can come apart.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info on Vic. I don't think it was Vice-Grips... The damage was only on one side of the shaft. I'm betting this JB will do the trick though...

If only all cars were this easy to troubleshoot and repair. Great fix with the JBWeld! Curious...does the shaft that goes through the seal get lubricated by the gear oil during normal use? Seems like that shaft needs to be lubricated with something to prevent friction damage to that oil seal.

@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
Good eye! Actually the coupler is just as it should be. It doesn't look correct, but the bushing should actually be oval shaped. That keeps vibration from the power train from transmitting to the shift linkage. It got me too the first time I saw it on the 3.2 Carrera...

Great content! And brilliant solution with the JB Weld Franny! How on Earth do you think that deep gouge occurred? it seems there would have been damage to the underside of the car if it was something from the ground that got up in there. Happy Holidays to you and Heidi! 🎄🕎
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
That is a great question... The only thing I can think of is that during the last seal removal maybe the person used , a,... drill? Probably something rotatey... The metal was actually pushed up above grade. It must have been human-induced because the boot would protect from road bits. But, whomever did it knew they caused the damage but didn't fix it?? This was common theme on the car. JB Weld for the win!

Great work and explanation ! I'm only a bit surprised you did not take the opportunity to change the 2 plastic coupler bushes, they show so much play in the video that you will not recognize your shifting afterwards. Just my 2 cents.
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 4 жыл бұрын
On the shift coupler? They are supposed to be like that... The holes are oblong to allow the transmission to move fore-aft a bit without disturbing the shifter in the car. It does add a little play, but I tried round bushings in the 911 and it was awful... you can actually see the shifter moving around.

I think I got them at an actual paint store but I bet any home center Home Depot, etc. would have them. They are pretty sweet.
