You know, those paper things we run into the house to save after you leave the stove on. You know, those things people burn when they are trying to send some misguided message. You know, those things that cause so much uproar in the classroom. You know, those things that get certain artists banned only to make them even more famous. Ya, books. Books people, books. In our case, photography books. The unicorn, the white elephant, the golden goose of acceptance when it comes to being a pro. But books create their own weather system, one which can go from sunny day to CAT5 hurricane in one short meeting or call. Best to be prepared and cast a wide net when it comes to knowledge of just what "doing a book" actually means. There is more than one answer, thankfully.
And before anyone gets prickly, I LOVE traditional publishing and traditionally published books. In fact, I have hundreds and hundreds of books and this is after a major downsizing. I see superb books being produced on a regular basis, so by no means am I down on publishing or publishers. But, like all other businesses, there are somewhat predatory things happening. It's our job as the artist to wade through these situations until we find something that makes sense. Saying "no" can often be the best decision you can make. (I learned this the hard way.)
1. 6:13, This should be FUN!
2. 8:07, If you are angry or feeling like you are doing a book to prove everyone wrong then stop immediately and do not attempt to make a book.
3. 9:39, Photobooks are for the 1% of the 1%. Keep things in context.
4. 12:15, Books are not easy.
5. 14:56, Artist driven book vs story-driven book
6. 19:09, Most common book deal I see and hear about.
7. 22:48, If you are paying a publisher to do your book, in my opinion, you are self-publishing. Get over it.
8. 26:55, Publishing cycles, twelve to eighteen months
9. 27:20, The ingredients of the majority of books I see
10. 29:10, If you have a real following you can sell a great book or a subpar book, and sell it out.
11. 31:00, KZfaq is better than IG because it supports long-form content.
12. 32:30, Does the world need your book?
13. 36:58, Always err toward weird
14. 39:00, You dont' need much. One copy of one book is often enough. Not every book needs a publisher.

I really enjoyed this video! Great info on the reality of book creation. I love making books but usually they are just for me or a small group of friends. Some are just images, while others may have a few words, and sometimes even a few paragraphs. I do them for me and occasionally for my friends. I find it so satisfying! I try and improve with each one, but never consider making money from them. It is all for the joy, challenge, and satisfaction! Once I discovered Blurb I was hooked. Interesting subject. I have many photographer friends who have done books... some successfully some not so. I used to collect every interesting photographer's book in the 80's when I was starting out.. 'The Photographer's Gallery' in London always had a great selection. Even after 25 years as a press photographer I couldn't really see a book in my work... like most I guess. More recently I've been doing personal projects and posting to social media, and several people have said I should do a book.. BUT I considered many of the points you bring up and I think you are dead right... I mean how many photobooks just end up in the bargain bucket racks in book stores? So I took your advice from a while back, to set a project with the idea of doing a book.. just one copy (or a small run to give out at most), coincidentally as it happens on Blurb. It has been very satisfying, I get to see my pictures in book form... (makes a changes from crappy news print). I have now made about half a dozen using the Bookwright/Blurb set up. I've made a few extra copies on some projects to give away, but the idea is basically to print them for myself. I think your advice is spot on... even for widely published snappers no one really cares about your book... unless you are known to a wider public. So thanks for your advice.. I'm chuffed to bits with my own photobooks, they give me a lasting hard copy of my favourite pictures.. which is far better than a 24h Instagram or Facebook post..

@@DANIELMILNOR505 I kind of had the 'time capsule' experience a couple of years back. My mum turned up with an old Ilford Multigrade box full of 10x8 prints. These picture I had taken back in the early 80's in the East End of London (very run down at the time I thought I was Don McCullin., a couple of Nikon's and some TriX). Most of the area has been redeveloped, the slums pulled down and the dock turned in the yuppy boutiques and coffee shops. This was my first Blurb book and I've actually sold a few copies too..LOL!! I really wish I'd kept the negatives, but I didn't see the value of the work as an 18 year old. My prints, made at home, were not very good, and I'm sure the negatives held more interesting shots. But scanned and corrected and sharpened a bit in Photoshop they look fine in the book.. I think most of my current pictures will have far more interest in 30 years, so hopefully they books will survive... Would be good if I could mail myself one in 30 years time... although I'd be 90 then so unlikely to happen...

Once again, thank you for all your knowledge. One of the bigger cons in the "model" photography world is 'getting published in a magazine', when said magazines accept pretty much any images (no matter how bad) and then run 6 covers so all the models in it can have a cover....and then charge both model and photographer for a copy. Maybe you get 'tear sheets.' And yet I know people (models and photographers) for whom that is how they measure their success. Several months ago you talked about creating our own books and magazines, and I had a thought..."Why don't I create a small magazine dedicated to the photoshoot I just did for local mode or client? They're in print, it's something a few folks might buy and it's only a few bucks...I mean, since the 'magazines' sell copies (probably only to the model and photographer anyway), why not cut out someone else making money, to at least being honest and putting a few bucks toward that? Or, maybe a semi-annual or annual magazine of my own with my fave images of the shoots I've done for the year? To me, that seems a more reasonable and fulfilling way to do it.

I say "yes," why not? I was once approached by a black and white magazine that inquired about running a feature on a project I had done. This had happened many times before and everything was going as it normally would until the last minute when this dipshi$ editor said "And it will only cost you $3000." It took me a second to figure out what was happening. "You want ME to pay YOU?" I asked. "Yes," she said. Took me about ten seconds to muster up the "go away." But, I went back through that magazine and realized a lot of good photographers had paid to get published. It was one of the early warning signs of just how screwed up this industry was.

I have a whole canon line up and l series lenses - you know the deal but I’m more enthused abt my Fuji fixed lens .. I just grew up with it. (Film) My mom, an art teacher w dark room in my basement and I was obsessed w fashion so looking at TONS of magazines I was able to pick up on lighting composition I guess. I have a ton of photos, I just don’t know where to start. I put them online ppl like them and I really don’t care. I want to make books. I learned bookright b/c I had to make book for someone a few years ago. What’s a theme I can start with? Most of the photos I have from personal work is travel. I have done professional work and been published but like you said that’s boring nobody cares. I’d like to do a documentary project about cycling… my husband does it. I don’t know. I know you said start small or a color palette perhaps. Can I look through my archive and draw out pics for a particular theme? Btw Glad things are better w you and your situation you had.

I realy tried to like shooting my xt1 with manual lenses.... but that focus peaking just seemed so strange to me. I do have a xm with a voigt 15mm straped to it. I just zone focus that at f8 and love it. I used to shoot a canon 50d with a manual 35mm and it worked fine, you twist the ring and the boxes lit up nice and simple. I don't understand why Fuji cant figure that out, especially with the x100s and the pro. Nothing beats an old lens with a 1/4 turn and a zone scale. Happy birthday!

@@DANIELMILNOR505 I don't really understand manual focus in the mirrorless age. I don't mean "don't understand" like "why would you bother". I mean I just can't figure out how to do it! With my ancient Nikon F film camera they had those zillion different "focusing screens" you could choose from. I loved, I think it was the "P" screen, that had a diagonal rangefinder-style split prism in the center. It was so fast and easy to put that on the edge of your eye and turn till focus was sharp. In the mirrorless age, I'm lost. Focus Peaking seems like a brilliant solution. Except for the part about how it doesn't actually work. I've tried every Focus Peaking setting I could find and the results are the same - focus peaking says it's in focus - resulting frame is soft. Zooming in to focus sort of works but it still isn't as confident as my old film camera, and then only if I have 1/2 hour to focus on a static subject. I honestly don't know how anybody gets sharp manual focus with today's stuff. Autofocus, most of the time, is fantastic with current equipment. So I mostly live there.

Look at the Pergear 25mm f1.8. Optically it surprised me as being quite good (best between f/4 - f/8). I'd actually bought it with the idea that it would be super soft and low contrast for a look I was trying to achieve. I was wrong. It comes in Fuji mount. I has a clickless aperture ring (which I hate so I have a piece of gorilla tape to assure I don't accidentally rotate it because I shoot mostly aperture priority). Both aperture ring and focus ring are nicely dampened. It's worth a look as a manual focus alternative to the Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR if inexpensive yet optically good is the goal (about $80).

@@DANIELMILNOR505 I know you don't do gear reviews, which I fully understand, yet I wouldn't mind knowing in the future if it worked out for your needs and produced images that met your goals. Like I said, my initial purchase was with the need of something soft and low contrast. Since the lens proved to have much better IQ it doesn't fit what I intended it for and have now started using it in a way that is more in line with the performance I've been seeing. Still a TBD as to how it fits into my workflow but I'm using it dedicated on my X-Pro 2 to put it through its paces. Time will tell. Keep up the good work on the channel. Great Dan, I really enjoyed the video (I watched it two times already ) since I just ordered my second self made book from my self project from blurb. I can consider myself as story driven person, however, as much as I enjoy the story, I also enjoy the mystery, something that makes me think and not directly telling me what is going on here. The question is, what is your idea about story with picture and less text? I mean short text and some hints here and there but let the viewer have also time to think and get what he or she gets. I am asking this because after one and half year project, I could get together maybe 48 pages with maybe 30 pictures, I mean by saying story, you mean the actuall story, guiding step by step or give a particular feeling once you close the book and think about it?
@DANIELMILNOR505

Depending on the imagery, you might not need much text. And it depends on the story. Take for example a book about war. You may see books that show the skill of the photographer and not much else, while a book like Blood And Honey by Haviv is like a history lesson, geopolitical lesson and more all wrapped into one publication.
