Welcome to the new www.shifter.media. Lighter, tighter, and easily making weight for the modern creative fight. Thank you to Charlene and Flemming for helping me with this project. The idea here was to simplify while also adding in a few key tactics. As you will see, the tabs have been reduced and neatly tucked into a small drop-down menu. Things like About, AG23, Subscribe are here as well as a general "Creative" tab that will now encompass the vast majority of my posts regardless of content. Easier, simpler, cleaner.
Also, at the bottom of the homepage, you will see icons for both Discord and Patreon. Discord is a way for us to continue a more precise conversation outside of the comment feature. In addition, Discord provides a good platform for critiques and image discussion. Patreon was something that kept coming up in email and conversation which prompted me to add this to the site. (I'm working on my first perk for Patreon folks as we speak, and it's a good one.)
At heart, I am a man who likes to wander with 50mm, an audio recorder, and my notebook. My ultimate goal is to return to longer posts that detail my personal experiences in the field making still photographs, recording ambient sound while focusing on the written word. And yes, there will be a newsletter. Build a community ONE individual human at a time. Welcome.

Thanks for this one, Dan! It’s good to hear that there are other creatives out there who refuse to publish only one niche of their work just to hit insane like counts and to please the algorithms. I work the same and you are a good example to look up to and remind me to stick to my ideas!

Awesome Dan! It’s been fun to watch the evolution from the Smogranch days. Good luck with the new site! Your video makes me think of a podcast I heard a little while ago discussing this idea of celebrating/embracing being a “multi-passionate creative,” as opposed to “niching down.” It’s kind of anti-thesis to what we here a lot of individuals tell us to do, but a fascinating argument for sure. Keep up the good work! I always enjoy your videos and listening to your perspective. 👍

Wow, the Smogranch days.......that's what started it all. And yes, the balance between being GREAT at one thing, which is key, but not allowing that ONE thing to be everything.

Give it two weeks. You might physically detox, don't feel bad. But after two weeks, if you can cut it completely, you just might feel like a new man.

Funny how we watch video and listen to audio only to remember a "line" or a "sound-bite," which is to your (well-said) point about still and copy. Just stopped mid-sentence to look at your "new" site. Very first thing...It feels good. I like the layout and navigation. Congrats! And hey, kinda like the "Sunday Morning with Milnor" (if that becomes a segment...Your welcome).

Yes, people don’t like multiple interests. I do two completely different kinds of music, plus photography. The thing I am least interested in is the thing most people follow me for - bane of my life. A ‘hipster dude’ told me I wasn’t successful (their judgement, not mine) was because I wasn’t relentlessly promoting my electronic music - and confusing people by posting general photographs and making the odd social/political comment. In the end I don’t care. I appreciate your videos.

A lot of these folks grew up with the con being part and parcel of life. Fake it till you make it mentality, so whatever is required to build the largest following possible is what will drive them. Just take one look at photography on YT.

Onwards and upwards… and I’ll be tagging along and trying to keep up…. A thought on the text + images concept: I wonder how many of us have lost (or at least had weakened) our ability to focus long enough to read anything beyond a single paragraph or two of text in one sitting. I know I struggle to put down my iPad and stop reading news-feed snippets or watching KZfaq videos and pick up a novel or other printed source. Even with longer essays online, I find it a challenge to stay focused. Now I AM getting long in the tooth (I can remember Elvis’ TV debut on the Ed Sullivan Show), so maybe there’s an organic reason for this. Guess I’m saying, don’t make the texts too long 🥴 Cheers.

The physicality of your brain has changed. Literally. Read "The Shallows." First an essay in the Atlantic, followed by the book. About what the internet and social in particular have done to our brains. Reading this was one of the reasons I killed FB and IG and Pinterest and a range of others.

Very good! I'm a big fan of image and audio. I'm weening myself off social media with only IG left to go. Which leaves my website as the only outlet for showing work. How to get eyeballs/interest is the big question.

Make great work. Share it slowly and when you have something good and just keep plugging. Ten real people is better than 1000 bots and strangers.

OMG! Just clicking through your blog and hit upon this picture from Oct. 9, 2014. Is there a way to do an On Photography request and is this print for sale? Don't know why, just love this photo.

@@DANIELMILNOR505 It looks like a dune buggy race taken at night with a slow shutter speed. Steaks of light everywhere. It's a still image that just keeps racing along. Oh, The Leica File 9. Page 864 of 882.

I share in your rejection of the idea (and the bad advice) to contour and curtail oneself to conform to the operation of an algorithm. I think that's the kind of thinking that needs a good kick in the nuts. Real people will not find other interesting real people to interact with by imitating a machine mind. What was it that Number Six said? ... "I am not a number, I am a free man!"

Great to hear. Not interested in the short play, yep long play's the way to go. Well my philosophy anyways. Not sure I'm any good at building community and all but time will tell. Kudo's to you for sticking to your guns.

Dan, is your intro intentionally 4x louder than the audio of the video? Or, am I the only one who experiences a very noticeable difference between the shift intro and then the audio of Dan talking? For me, it’s easily 3-4x louder than him talking.
