Shifting equilibrium concept: transportation of bananas under constraints. very interesting!

A very very nice concept of shifting equilibrium...How many bananas can be safely transported on the camel if he eats 1 banana/metre to survive; there are total 3000 bananas and the total distance is 1000 m; the camel can carry maximum 1000 bananas at a time?

Hi Gaurav please check this ... i am pretty sure answer is 533.33 Lets start by collecting the bananas on the first km itself we carry 1000 bananas and drop 998 at 1 km and then comeback with another 1000 banans and drop 998 and then carry last 2 bananas in the 3rd trip that means we spend 5 banana for the 1st km. note that we will have to spend 5 banana per km till 200 km because after that we can shift all the bananas in just 2 trips by using 3 bananas per km and this will also last only till 333.33 km more that is upto 533.33 where we will be left with 1000 banana and 466.66 km to go last trip 1000-466.66= 533.33

yes pokar master! u r absolutely correct; its technically 533.33 even by the method i told in the video. in fact i talked about it too..but since we took integer, we sad 533 is the answer. Thanks.

hi gaurav sir, I hv one more problem related to this question , if camel eat only one banana per meter only in forward direction. thn what was the max banana transport at B. I know the answer but not sure its around 833 or 866 but dont know the explanation , pls sir can you provide us video solution. tysm.

hello! int hat case the answer is 833; take x first as the distance where he offloads bananas; we get 3x= 1000 ( as we need to add x only in forward direction) and hence x =333; now lets take y as the next distance we get 2y= 1000 and hence y =500 and therefore total distance travelled so far is 833 which will be our answer. +Ashmait Singh Bagga hello..we want the camel to eat in multiples of 1000 so as to not make him travel again for the remainder of bananas; and so will make him move 5x distance and thus eat 1000 bananas in the process! thanks!

Heh what if the question is now changed where the camal will now have 4000 bananas how will you solve it?

hello...we will apply same concept: first we find 7x = 1000; x = 1000/7= 142; then 5y=1000 giving y =200 and then 3z = 1000 and giving z=333 and hence the number of bananas that can be saved is 142+200+333=675.

Hi Gaurav, I think the ans is 534. why because we are not using 1000 bananas for the second time,(ie 333 *3 = 999). Please check

Srikanth CHindam hello..no it is 533 only...see..u r right that the camel will eat 999 bananas in 2nd time; but out of 1001 bananas remaining; the camel can carry maximum of 1000 bananas only at the back and since he has to travel 467 m more; he will eat 467 bananas and so 533 will be safely transported. hopw u got..Thanks!

+Eishu Bansal Thanks so much! we want the camel to eat 1000 bananas as the camel can carry maximum of 1000 at a time; and so..we want the camel to not come back for remaining bananas...I mean..if we do not make him eat 1000...there will be some bananas remaining in the final round for which the camel will have to do additional round and thus reduce value as he eats up as well...hope u got! thanks!

hi JB. because the camel can carry maximum of 1000 at a time. So, if he eats 1000; multiples of 1000 will remain everytime as originally there are 3000 bananas. So what we want is that the rounds of camel wont be there for any extras. lets say, if there are 200 bananas remaining...so for them the camel has to go back and fetch them...he is wasting his round as he cud have carried 1000 on his back whereas there are only 200 remaining due to our mismanagement. hope u got it......
