For anyone interested. If you have a Logitech wheel, BeamNG is really good practice for driving a stick shift IRL. It simulates a clutch better than any other game/simulator.

Also, remember that the softer you raise your foot from the clutch after switching a gear, the smoother the car will move. If you raise it too abruptly, the car will bump forward. Edit: notice how he does it in the video. Edit 2: when bringing your car to a full stop, do not forget to step on the clutch while doing so (he does it at the start of the video). Either keep it on the clutch for as long as you're stopped, or switch to neutral gear if you feel you might stop for longer than a couple seconds. You will only raise your foot from the clutch with first gear on if you want your car to start moving.
@iota87327 ай бұрын
Do not keep it on the clutch. If you're at a stop for any more than two or three seconds, you should put it in neutral and release the clutch. The dude in the video puts his transmission in neutral but keeps his foot on the clutch for some reason, that's pretty much the worst of both worlds.

The first lesson that any driver of a manual car learns is how easy it is to stall even a powerful engine if you let the clutch in slighrtly to quickly and/or don't apply quite enough throttle. I wonder why the driver has got the heel of his right foot in line with the brake, so he has his foot is rotated at the 1 o'clock position when he's got it in the default position on the accelerator. Looks very uncomfortable.

Its just a safety precaution (?) mostly. You can switch faster between the gas and break if your foot is in that positio, so its a very good habit to have. For example for emergency breaking. But its also just easier in terms of not always having to switch your entire foot from one place to the other🤷♀️

Always be in first at a light with the clutch in. If someone is coming up behind you fast, the last thing you want is to be is in neutral.

All this might seem sensible till your car's clutch pressure plate and springs wear out prematurely. Unless you're yielding to oncoming traffic or stopping at a stop sign when roads are empty, or maybe letting a pedestrian cross, then always clutch in, neutral, clutch out. Your wallet and car will both thank you.
@deceivery18 күн бұрын
if you can't react to seeing someone coming up quickly you don't have the relfexes to be on the road. sitting on the clutch at every possible second is also a fast track to having a prematurely worn clutch. besides, being able to move forward faster doesn't give much options when youd most likely be driving into traffic. do i want to be rear ended or tbone someone?

When you're learning and have trouble with your car stalling, you should release the clutch slower when its in the "sweet spot". Thats the spot when you can feel the car wants to start moving, because the clutch is making a connection. When its in that friction zone, keep the clutch still for 2 seconds for it to build the friction and you can release the clutch further. A mistake learners often make is that they very slowly release the clutch, but then quickly release it when they feel the car wants to move. Thats exactly the opposite of what you should be doing.

also something that i havent seen mentioned yet. its not necessary at all to go into neutral when you stop. sure if you are in a backlog of traffic then definitely so you can give your foot a rest, but this guy in the video only stopped for maybe 5 seconds or less before moving again, just go into 1st and keep the clutch down and ready to go.

Heel toe downshift while rematch with gear synchronizers before placing into gear and reapplying clutch. Once you learn it well with that car, it's simple.
@Mortimer501457 ай бұрын
I tend to use my rev counter to help with rev-matching: I have found that in my car, going from one gear to the adjacent one up or down needs a change of about 500 rpm. The closer you manage to rev-match, the less work the synchromesh cones have to do in "persuading" the shaft to match the cog that it is locking onto. I'm not perfect, but I do a damn sight better than some people. I had the misfortune to get a lift with someone who had been taught to come right off the power so the engine idles, then change gear and let the clutch up in the new gear (with an idling engine!!!!) and then increase power again. (Like driving a 1st Generation DMU train!) That was a bloody jerky ride. It was a difficult situation because she was my manager at work. Should I say anything? When she apoligised for a particularly bad change, I took it as a cue to suggest that there might be a "different" (ie better!) way to do it. The poor woman was almost hugging me in gratitude when she learned how to do it properly and to eliminate the jerks. Her opinion of the driving instructor who had taught her badly was unprintable ;-)

Noooo, an emergency stop, break quickly by foot straight to floor, then just before stopping, clutch down. If u forget the clutch the worst that happens is engine stalls on stopping. With clutch down and time delay of gear into neutral and break, you will already have hit them. In emergencies, your brain has a split second to react to stop. Plus, iv been driving manuals for 25 years, in a split second of thinking u need to stop, the brain will not be able to register clutch down, into neutral, then breaking. Trust me. I had a car cut into right into my lane while I was only doing 30 in the rain, I had a split second to think and slam my breaks on. I stopping inches from the passenger side of their car.
@janm.44969 ай бұрын
@@emma-kp8vz no. you said it yourself, in emergencies your brain has a split second to react. its better to just stomp on both pedals at the same time as hard as you can... engine braking is not applicable if you stop using brakes... brakes are powerful enough to overpower throttle and the limiting factor here is the tire traction. also in emergencies you want to retain the ability to drive and not stall... forget the clutch in at the last moment nonsense, that only for normal braking.
