In this video, I challenge the conventional view of posture and delve deeper into its true meaning. Posture is not merely a static physical structure dependent on core strength and muscle engagement. It is a dynamic reflection of our habitual movement patterns, lifestyle choices, and emotional state. I will guide you through a journey of understanding how posture is shaped by the nervous system and how retraining your movements and lifestyle can lead to lasting improvement. Embrace a new perspective on posture and discover the key to authentic and effortless posture!

Do you have anything for weight loss? I tried your shoulder one And it helped instantly versus the painful stretching. I subconsciously hold my shoulders up a lot without knowing even in my sleep But your technique helped a lot. I had to do it many times to fully let go.

Brilliant! What a clear explanation of the dynamic perspective of posture! I believe it's the essence of Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement. I've been stuck in the static, structural viewpoint of posture for decades, I could not understand what "effortless movement " mean then. Now, I begin to get a glimpse of the insights that you've shared with us. Thank you, Taro!

Thank you for this video - completely clarifies the way I move as a horserider when training! Before we even begin a movement on our horses, we use first 'intent' ie visualise and see the movement, then we 'prepare the body' ie move ourselves in the saddle where we need to be to apply our weight and correct aids to the horse - and finally 'we move' after all the careful preparation🤗 Our posture on our horses is absolutely critical to achieving any results under saddle, as two beings need to move in synchronisation together, and therefore we as riders need to be 100% aware and in control of our body on top of the horse🤗 Thank you once again for a brilliant insight and video!!🙏🤗

Just used that idea while swimming. I have anterior pelvic tilt. While by the wall of the pool I aligned my pelvis to lift my hips and then swam to the end of the lane. Engage the correct posture then move. I moved so much more beautifully through the water. Thank you for the clarity on posture.

Would you please explain which exercises are useful in establishing good posture while walking?
@TaroIwamoto
@TaroIwamoto Жыл бұрын
first, letting go of unnecessary effort in abs/core is very important to free your spine and ribs which frees your breathing too. what's really keeping people from standing, walking, moving freely (efficient posture) is unnecessary muscular holding which happens habitually and unconsciouly. Posture is really movement, so the way you improve your posture is to improve quality of movement, which will reduce unnecessary muscular effort. So you can do any of my videos, even breathing lessons to improve your posture!

I see what you’re saying. Does working core + upper back muscles help to stand or sit in better form to facilitate functional movement? How do you or FKT see physical therapy or muscle training? For ex weight lifting improves bone health and shoulder pain. I think this maybe where some watching get confused vs PT videos. Thx
@TaroIwamoto
@TaroIwamoto Жыл бұрын
I can see how people get confused about this. What is really really important for all of us to know is that we need to put whatever we're addressing (strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, endurance, etc) in a functional context (specific functional activities and movements). People often talk about specific muscles, and corrective exercises for specific muscle groups without any context. Core strength could mean many things in functions. Yet, core strengthening exercises are prescribed by many healthcare providers, movement coaches without specific funcitonal contexts, and as a result, so many have trained themselves to engage their core at all times even when not helpful. Same thing with posture training. Please don't get me wrong. I'm a huge advocate of strengthening training and stretching. I just would like to shift peoples' perspective of movement training in general. The term functional movement is so overused, and it has become another buzz word and another exercise. To train our movements functionally we need to understand what specific functions we're talking about, and what functions we are trying to influence with movement training. Knowing which muscles are doing what is really not that important, is secondary because if you follow your fucntions, then specific muscles follow specific functions. So my main point is a context matters!

Great insights! Thanks for sharing it! I have a question: what about sitting position for meditation? How would you apply your perspective to this context?
@TaroIwamoto
@TaroIwamoto Жыл бұрын
my pleasure! Having a proper support under sitbones while sitting (floor or chair) is important from this perspective as it allows you to move freely from your hips even if you are sitting still. When your hips are constrained, your movement becomes compromised, and your breathing becomes compromised, and your mind becomes compromised. The freedom of movement = freedom of body and mind:)

My posture is getting worse because of mild pectus excavatum. Is there any way to fix it? Thanks
@TaroIwamoto
@TaroIwamoto Жыл бұрын
a biggest perspective shift for many is that we focus on how our posture is specifically affecting our functions in daily activities so we can think beyond structures. It's not a structure you're trying to fix. It's functions you want to improve, so my question to you is what do you mean by your posture getting worse in terms of your functions? Affecting your comfort in your neck, shoulders, back, breathing??
