I have Shih Tzu too. I think that comment meant a full groom, bath every 5 days…as for combing and brushing yes that should be done every day with a full coat.

@@sarahscott2496 Hmnn. Our breeder said that bathing too often makes their skin too dry. She bathed them less than that and so I went with her advice and it works fine for us. I think the key is the daily brush out, I can tell when a bath is needed as the coat changes its texture and becomes heavier and sticky. Perhaps it depends on the type of coat a shih tzu has. My pup Acorn has a silky coat that really flows nicely, but some have different coats I notice.

@@annabowness-park3604 it’s true they all have different types of coat for sure, my two are very different from one another. As for drying their skin out from bathing, I used to believe that also, but apparently that’s essentially a myth that will forever be perpetuated lol I am in many grooming groups and a long haired Shih Tzu group where there is a great wealth of experience and knowledge and it is often discussed. Quality products being used properly is what matters, not the frequency. Just as an example, during the coat change Shih Tzu go through where they mat no matter what…lol one woman with many years experience with long hair Shih Tzu recommends bathing every 3 days while brushing every day, to prevent the mats until it is over, which is several months I believe…

@@sarahscott2496 Thanks Sarah. Interesting perspective. If you have any grooming groups that are online, I would love to know about them as I am always looking to learn. Currently I brush him every day - no exceptions and he very rarely gets matts - just little knots which I take out gently. I have gotten better over time. Our daily brush outs are a bonding time and he enjoys it as much as I do. I don't feel confident enough to trim him so he goes to a professional groomer every six weeks or so, and she has only a found a matt a couple of times that I missed when it was a small knot. I am definitely improving at brushing him out. I love the way this groomer says she only uses a pin brush and not a slicker brush - same as me. T

Don’t try to dry the area that you are working on, circle that dog 3 times while brushing. The first time to lightly brush, the second time going deeper into the coat. The 3 rd time to finish. I hope that makes sense.

@@grandestyledoggrooming it absolutely does make sense yes I thought I’d give that a go when I seen you drying Chika, I was so close to getting the sherbano dryer too now I kinda wish I had 🙄 definitely going to try this idea next time I bath her though thanks so much for your help 😘

The shape of the pin brush is not important. I like the Artero pin brush. I us Petsilk Rainforest products . Chica is spayed as well, she just has a very silky coat.

This dog always had a face trim, usually with full coat I keep a full beard.

Training. I groom live daily and constantly give training techniques that work for me. As you can see in this video it looks pretty trimming just the head, but yesterday I trimmed a Lhasa Apso live that doesn’t look good that way. It really is dependent on the individual dog.
