It’s worth noting that from my experience as a mechanic working with a lot of these cranks and seeing a few fail, they will rarely ever show signs of bonding separating for a long period before failing. Once a bond starts to seperate or a crack forms, they fail straight away. These inspections won’t Really achieve too much in my opinion in terms of finding cranks before failure. This also raises the other important issue, once a crank is inspected a lot of people are going to think they are all good and not worry about it. What if as a mechanic I inspect the crank and say it is safe and then it fails in several months 🤷‍♀️

Paul over at Mapdec cycles said the same thing and he actually consulted his insurance agent. They told him don’t even bother, and just send the stuff back to shimano. Your post is pretty much spot on. If a mechanic inspects and gives the green light. The onus is on them if the customer, god forbid, gets hurt later as a result of the issue.

As CAE engineer, I second this. Imagine going full gas through a corner and then it snaps, there's risk of being unalive. Visual inspection is just a prelim and not sufficient in any engineering QA standard for bonding and delamination inspection.

If Shimano wanted some good will from customers, I would think that they could offer those whose cranks pass visual inspection the option of an upgrade to one of the replacement cranks at Shimano's actual cost. I'd part with $200 to know that I'm not riding around on a bomb that could explode underneath me at any moment. Just something I'd consider if I were in their position. If they get the old cranks back, I bet they could recycle the materials and even come out slightly ahead.

I'm a mechanic in a qualified Shimano shop. Biggest tip I can give you about all of this. If your 2 letters match with the ones affected, BRING YOUR BIKE INTO A SHOP. Qualified Shimano dealers have access to training to properly inspect the cranks. We can let you know if you're good to go or not (plus your cranks will get cleaned). A crank starting to fail "COULD" make a clicking sound and feel off, like it's sliding. Either way, check your cranks once a month, let the shop show you what to look for.

Took my FC-6800 crankset to a Shimano qualified shop last year due to excessive creaking noise. He replaced the BB, but of course that didn’t help. I then went online to search and found this issue. I could physically see the thing was delaminated, and that made the creak on each pedal stroke. I then took it to the shop’s former employee’s new bike shop, and he quickly stated that he had changed many sets with that issue while working at the Shimano qualified shop. I then went back to the first shop because of paying fo a non-fix. Unfortunately the owner/mechanic (same guy) wasn’t there, so I just left that crankset there and told his wife to call me. He never called, and I bought a new FC-8000 elsewhere, which was pretty costly at the time as they were in short supply…

Winner, winner. Both mine are on the list ☹ I've thought for a while they were overly creaky. I've had the bike shop look at the BB several times, but they always come back saying it is OK. Will be interesting to see if the inspection comes back with anything.

As a mechanic, I would NOT be comfortable sending a customer back out on an affected crank which has passed inspection. If the crank fails in a week's time, say, who is liable? Am I or my shop liable for not seeing a hairline fracture at the time? The whole process is terrible and I suspect we might see this evolve into a wholesale replacement across the board as retailers refuse to carry out inspections.

In the exact situation you mention at the end. Right crank has an affected manufacturing code, left crank has a power meter and is therefore newer and (apparently) unaffected. With regards to getting a new power meter factory installed on the replacement crank, this could mean we're without a ridable bike for a very long period of time. Reached out to my LBS here the UK, and they've told me today that there's going to be a Shimano video showing consumers how to do a first pass of an inspection and only if it fails that will we go to the shop, presumably for a more thorough inspection, which TBH I'm even less happy about. They did say they'd only want the cranks taking in, which makes sense if you've already taken them off anyway to do your own inspection. Finally, why are they replacing them with a Frankenstein* modified 12 speed crank set? I was under the impression that at least 11 speed R8000 was still being made, it's certainly still available to purchase in the UK. (* a Crankenstein?)

A good question is what process change did they make, as some of the affected cranks continued to be made after the end date. I have a RF left side and RG drive side... looks like I just scrape through. I have a newer set with Tx numbers... again they look just the same though. In reality the only fool-proof way to know the affected cranks are ok would be to x-ray them... a process that would certainly exceed their value in labour and logistics.

I’ve got a failed RG coded crank that was fine till it went pop on a ride and I could see the centre crank spider flexing/moving outwards as you put force through the crank arm. My Ultegra 8000 crank failed by cracking and delaminating, i felt the pedal was flexing before i noticed that the crank was faulty and only noticed the crack and delaminating by chance. Whilst trying to identify the fault It was during Covid so I couldn’t get a crank from Shimano UK but they did reimburse me fully for the purchase and fitting of a new set of cranks. My mates 105 crank from about 2019 also failed recently and looked like it had suffered corrosion within the BB, this happened without any warning on a short steep climb, luckily there was light traffic as he fell off the bike into the road. Shimano UK replaced free and free fitting with no quibbles. It is concerning that these cranks are apparently failing due to the hollow tech process and i wonder what would be the response should a “checked and not failed” crank later fail resulting in an injury or worse to a rider? What liability would fall on Shimano then?

It took me a while to diagnose. I replaced my cleats as I thought one had too much float, it felt a bit weird. Then there was this clicking sound, which I thought would be pedal bearings. SO I serviced my pedals many times. When it got so bad it was obvious the crank was falling apart the penny finally dropped. I replaced it, but because the muscle memory of my right leg was so used to the arm flexing the new crank felt faulty at first. I had to stop several times to check the pedal wasn't moving about. After 50 miles or so, my leg became used to the movement. It was a bit weird.

And be sure to have an official inspection done, if only to cause Shimano some financial pain.

My experience is that this recall is already a s#/t show. My Trek Emonda with Ultegra components was in the shop because I was having some creaky sound’s coming from what I assumed was the bottom bracket. Inspected by LBS and found a hairline crack in frame that Trek replaced under warranty. Trek got the frame to the shop in 2 business days. I told the shop about the recall on 9/22 they inspected and could not find any visual signs but shimano asked them to ship to them for further inspection. 9/27-28 shimano failed my crank and agreed to replace under the recall. Today I am told that estimated ship date is 10/30! With shipping and installation rime I am looking at 6 weeks to get my defective crank replaced and mine was turned into Shimano on day 3 of the recall. They knew this was coming and should be able to do better. Looks like SRAM will be on all my bikes going forward.

This recall is getting an F. In short: not a recall. It's legal cya after 4500 incidents. Parts are replaced only if imminent failure is obvious, which is really just extended warranty and hoping the crank does not fail after Inspection. For context, Peloton replaced +2M seat post a after only 35 failures (+250lbs riders were falling off stationary Bikes), which is what responsible corporations do. The shimano fiasco is way more serious.

So assuming the creaking is due to the issue , its taken approx 7 years and lots of heavy stress riding (90kg weight , do quite a lot of short / sharp hills). The bike shop showed me the issue on above , was showing on the inside of crank which was only visible after taking it apart I have another bike from 2020 that is in scope that i'm waiting to take in - no creaking - if it gets the all clear , i will have no confidence about riding on it. Not good. PS I'm in the UK

They didn't hang about. Our LBS in the UK said wait until October, but this was for general "inspections" not creaking examples.

To make it even more muddy: How about Pioneer Powermeters, as this product is bought by Shimano? Will the warranty be the same as with a normal Shimano crank with Powermeter?

I mean, the last pic he shows (I'm assuming from Shimano) has a Pioneer power meter right side crankset...so maybe? Pioneer hasn't been making power meters for a few years now unfortunately.

I’d been waiting your update and comment! Has there been any comment on if you’ve changed the chainrings to non-standard rings? I didn’t see anything in the FAQs. Example being I use FC6800’s, Stages left side but switched standard rings to a narrow-wide single ring (on an Alfie set up). Dealer replacement would be for the replacement cranks but I’d assume standard rings.

maybe before 2019 is all they can handle right now, who knows if they ever changed anything with the same bonding glue approach that is still present at newer ultegra, dura ace models.

The left crank of my Dura-Ace FC-9000 failed around the pedal thread area in early 2017 after several years use. I was overseas and had to replace it with something to get going again so managed to find an Ultegra FC6700 crankset. If they replace the crankset with FC-09 wondering do they also supply the chain rings as I think the FC-9000 ones would not be compatible?

The US site says to bring the bike in for inspection... would they also inspect a crankset that I've uninstalled myself? That would be way more convenient for me. Although at least from my visual inspection, they don't look to have debonded at all so it would be very interesting to see what constitutes a "visual inspection".

That'd be one to ask the Shimano dealer. I'd assume they'd be ok with assessing just the crank. In fact, if I was doing the assessments I'd prefer it.

By having bike shops check the cranks, aren't Shimano shifting any future liabilities? If the crank breaks after being given the ok it could well land on the head of the bike technician and shop.

funny but true story: one day before they announced the recall i bought an old Roubaix bike with 6800 cranks. One of the main reasons for the purchase was so that i can own 6800 cranks. I always wanted them. xD they are fine. No cracks. But the design of the back side shocked me. You can literally see the glue there. Bad engineering from Shimano. No wonder 6800 fail the most.

I have owned 2 of the effected cranks. A Dura-ace 9000 and a Ultegra 6800. BOTH have failed! That is a 100% failure rate. The first in 2017, which Shimano did nothing about. I bought a replacement for the Dura-ace 9000 left crank arm that failed. I used the Dura-ace 9000 crank until 2000 until I no long felt safe with it and I installed the Ultegra 6800. And when the 6800 started separating, I replaced it before it broke, so it didn't kill me. I never reported it to Shimano because I knew they would do nothing about it. Now that the recall is official, the number of reported failures is going to soar! Far beyond the 4519 they say they are aware of. But I think they have waited to issue the recall for over 4 years, when they knew there was a big problem, because a lot of those affected cranks have already failed, been thrown in the trash, and replaced already. And now, no longer available for inspection. So Shimano is off the hook. Very sleezy in my opinion.

I have a crank with one of the affected codes, but it's now running a wolftooth chainring. Using 3rd party rings is going to void warranty, right? Means I'll have to find a set of Shimano rings to put back on before talking to them.

While I understand that Shimano is trying to minimize their losses, all of these cranksets should be replaced regardless. It's like Takata saying that out of the 67 million airbags recalled, it will only replace the ones that show signs of imminent failure...

Shimano: "Your cranks need to be checked. Despite being checked out okay, they might still fragment in the future, but eh - that's yo problem" Also the "providing payment compensation" for crank power meters and not providing any sort of replacement while the cranks are back with shimano is pretty poor. I have two bikes affected by this with need for replacement still TBD

At the 6gap century ride this weekend I was talking a guy from Colorado who’s son Shimano hollow Tech 2 ultegra crank came apart during the ride on one of the climb’s he said that the support form the bike shop was able to replace the crankset so I guess they came prepared for this! I have the same crank on my madone I don’t feel comfortable riding knowing that the crank could snap at any time, visually check is not enough for this type of problem, even if you are doing a visual check and everything looks fine there is a lot of force being emitted onto these cranks I think to be safe they should just replace all of them!
