Welcome back to Horns High Mountain Biking...
In this video I'm unboxing and testing out a brand new SPD pedal from Shimano. But this isn't just an SPD pedal, this is a SAINT SPD pedal! The Saint lineup is reserved for the absolute best of the best in durability, reliability and performance. So these pedals better be great, right?
So sit back, crack open a cold one and let's see if Shimano goes home a hero or a zero with their latest SPD offering.
I've been very happy with my Shimano XT Trail SPD pedals but they could use some additional support in the form of a bigger cage.
This will improve my riding in two ways:
1) I'll have a wider contact patch with the pedal, which will help distribute the forces from high speed corners and big landings across a larger portion of my feet.
2) That wider contact patch will also help me adjust/maintain my balance during low-speed, rocky, techy terrain when the going gets dicey.
However, I have a couple of concerns:
1) The Saints weigh about 168 grams MORE. And that's not just weight, that's rotational weight. And rotational weight is something I pay attention to on my bike. Will that weight be noticeable?
2) Will this larger cage/platform get in the way when I get hung up on the rocks and need to get a foot on the ground on the quick?
In the comments below, let's talk about your pedals. What do you currently use and why? What other pedals have you tried?

I was a big fan of clipless pedals, I even bought the Shimano Saint SPD pedals... But I alsowanted to test flats, so I also ordered a pair of flat pedals Pedaling Innovations Catalyst. To summarize the situation in a few words, the Saint pedals will never be mounted on my bike. More precisely, no pedal other than the Catalysts from Pedaling Innovations will be mounted on my bike! For sale: New and unused Shimano Saint SPD pedals.

New trail rider here on plain SPD pedals (like PD-M520). Overall I'm happy with those but sometimes I put a foot down in technical sections (like cascading drops) and it can be tricky to get that foot back on the pedal fast in the midst of a bunch of gnarled roots and rocks. The clipless aren't great when not clipped in. I tried flat pedals and hated them. I'm hoping the saints will make those situations a little easier - being able to ride better when not fully clipped in.
@RideWithGravity
@RideWithGravity 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, those little bitty SPD pedals are tricky to get back in to. And when though think you're clipped in but then your foot slips off and the pedal swings around and says hi to your shin? Man I hate that. The Saints will at least give your shoe something to grab on to while you're getting clipped back in. And you can bash them on rocks without as much worry about messing them up. Cheers and happy tails! 🤘

had mallet Es, have xt spd, going saint platform for more shoe supper on enduros. mallets have a sweet spot on release and DOES NOT dis engage in any agle but have best platform feel and entrance, xt have best dis engagement in ANY angle but engagement is sketchy with min support. Im thinking the saint platform spd will be the best of both worlds.looking foward to it.

Love your smooth easy style of delivery! I've ridden SPD (xc no platform) for years Thousands of miles. Recently switched to Ht Ae03 flats, and it has upped my game big time! I love my flats but love the idea of a hybrid so I just tried a set of Crank bro's Mallets. They felt exactly like my SPD's I could not feel the cage at all and they were a little tight to get out of. I'm sure they will loosen up over time. Maybe i just need a softer pair of shoes, wearing Specialize's enduro shoe. Long story "Longer! I find no draw back in flats. They pedal as well as clip-less but more important than getting my foot out, I can get it back on the flat pedal much faster in tricky situation. I'm clip-less on moderate trail but flats on the crazy stuff.

@ProMachineRider

Would be interesting to see how these perform with different shoes with different levels of stiffness. I suspect the stiffer the shoe the less benefit from these hybrid pedals. If your shoe confirms a bit to the pedal then there’s a contact with the platform otherwise I suspect there isn’t. But then again you still have the platform to use if you can’t get clipped in. So maybe riders with stiffer enduro type shoes or Xc type shoes will just get more weight with no benefit. Not everyone likes the big five ten style of shoe.

I am new into riding after many years and never rode clipless before. My bike needs had me look at this as an option because sometimes I hop on for a short ride around the corner and I don't want to change shoes but I have the option to clip for more and I don't have to change the pedals out with my mind or need. It is all personal but I feel this is a great option to have both for a beginner in one shot to get used to riding again and to go clipless as well.
@RideWithGravity
@RideWithGravity 6 жыл бұрын
Give them a shot but I'll be honest, riding on these kind of pedals with flat shoes isn't as comfy as riding on a true platform pedal. The SPD cleat sticks up above the platform enough to get in the way of riding them without an SPD shoe. Having said that, if you're talking about doing a brief neighborhood Cruise or something like that, you'd probably be okay. But the SPD cleat will start letting you know it's there pretty soon.

I started out on XTs and rode those for a long time. I've switched to XT Trails and have been really happy with them for a couple years now. I'm in the same boat here looking for more of a platform for the more aggressive, DH style of riding. I'm torn between these Saint pedals and the HT X2. I have become very familiar with the SPD cleat system over about 15 years of riding so I'm not sure if I want to switch it up.

I am old enough that I started on rat-traps with clips and straps - the straps were always kept loose. I early adopted SPD with some Ritchey Logic pedals. My new bike has Issi Flash SPD pedals. I have thought about trying some hybrid ones as I think it might be good to be able to stay uncliped at times, like having to restart in a techie section.

I do road touring, originally tried my MTB Speedplay Frogs but found they were too small of a pedal and my feet would hurt after awhile, so I switched to Shimano A530 because it had a larger platform than the Frogs, but sort of like the Frogs I can feel the pedal hitting the ball of my foot which is where I have arthritis issues. So would these Shimano Saint SPD pedals be a better choice for road touring over the other two that I have?
@RideWithGravity
@RideWithGravity 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think I would recommend them for what you're looking for. These would probably feel very similar to your Shimanos. I'm not sure what kind of arthritis pain you have or if you've experimented with adjusting your cleat position but sometimes those adjustments can help. Getting your foot further forward can alleviate some knee/hip pain.

@JeffWagen
@JeffWagen 5 жыл бұрын
@@RideWithGravity that's what's keeping me from buying them, here in Brazil those things are expensive, and having to rebuild them from time to time is kinda nonsense lol. I work with machining and I have access to a lathe, I was thinking about machining the bushings out of Brass-Graphite wich is used in heavy machinery, but I'm afraid of getting the pedals and even with better bushings it will cause problems. I usually buy bike parts directly from China cause they cost half of their official price here, but the crank brothers are not marketed over there. I switched to flats to try to cure some bad habits. When I go back to clipless it'll be spd for sure and probably saints. I rode old school shimano dx pedals until I switched to flats , tried crank bros , not a big fan. Anyway I think these are comparable to my ancient dx .

I like shimano pedals. M505 on road/crossbike, M9000 on xc and M820 for trail, enduro, dh. The thing with shimano is that they're at a pricepoint where they're hard to beat. Saint & Zee especially blow most others straight out of the water imo. I agree with what most said on this particular pedal. Crankbrothers is more expensive and sucks balls compared to the saint. HT D1 is kinda okish, Although the weight savings don't make up for the lack of quality. Other then weight Saint wins. At half the price. HT also has to feel like a special snowflake with their own cleats. Boo Fucking Hoo. (388 grams) KCNC wins if you can live with one sided. Same Price as HT D1 but lighter (284 grams). It's better in terms of feel (all their pedals are imho), But not by enough to justify the price. It's about 2 sets of saint pedals.
