Shimano STEPS won't charge? Check this first!

My Shimano STEPS battery stopped charging. The light on the charger came on, the light flashed on the battery for hours but it wouldn't charge.
I found a bad wire in the charge cable. now my Larry Vs Harry Bullitt works again!

Shawne, you have just saved me between NZ$830 and NZ$1700! My battery erratically stopped charging and I thought it might be broken wires in the charger. I took my bike to my e-bike shop where the tech used another charger to no avail. The solution was to buy a new battery - but then I found your video! 🤩 I had _exactly_ the same problem as you (two broken wires and, like you, I could feel a lump), and have just followed your steps to repair the damage. My battery is now charging perfectly all for the price of a $3.89 Torx driver and bits I already had. Thanks so much.

Oh and I had the same problem with my input strain relief breaking, like yours, some months ago. I used hotglue to make a thicker and longer strain relief (where you used tape, but about half as long), and I'll do the same for the output end. Like you, again, my black wire was only mostly severed. See? Exactly the same problem! Those three skinny wires are for the charge control, I'm guessing.

I graciously thank you for your video it is the only one that has the same charger as my ebike which is a Trek dual sport plus. I have 12,000 km on the battery and bike and I know that the cells are strong when I took it to the bicycle store here in town they wanted to ship it out to get diagnosed bicycle, charger, battery and all for God knows how long. On top of that it would have cost me $75 before tax just to get that diagnosis done and lose my bicycle for an unknown amount of time. I thought it had something to do with the battery management system within the battery that was causing me issues but it wasn't thanks to you and your video you have saved me a lot of money and anxiety. I'm going to be doing another KZfaq video on my channel soon when I do another review on my bike and I will be sure to give a shout out to your Channel when I do so. Thanks again👍🇨🇦

Hey Shawne, thanks so much for the clear video. In my case the brick light is blinking and the battery is flashing a green light for a millisecond then goes off. What would you recommend to test? Thank you so much

Hello! I believe the smaller wires are communication between the charging transformer and the Battery Management System (BMS) If the battery is too hot to charge, both the battery and the transformer flash an error.

Which screw driver do I need to open the main box? Can you tell me?

I'm guessing that it was a small torx. But, Allen (hex key) will work on a torx fastener in a pinch!

With this particular system the rear derailleur is also electric. If we lived in a flat city we could probably make it to the bike shop but we have BIG hills.

When is someone gonna do a video on how to hack this overpriced charger. I’m not paying 300$ for a bike I paid 500$ . Can’t stand those type of companies
