Racing in bad weather lately forced me to overhaul my XTR pedals ASAP. They didn't sound right and got some bearing play too... Enjoy the work! By the way - the racing goes awesome - will update you with my fitness level soon.

I had to do this to my old XT's, shafts were torn up, replaced them with new titanium shafts. A lot of work for little pedals. Thanks for the breakdown!

Same with mine M520 balls completely eaten one shaft.

Where did you get the titanium shafts from?

One thing to warn everyone before touching similar pedals, threads on shaft cone and nut are not regular, so I stripped my nut 🤦♂️ It’s left thread and it is very hard to find M5 bolt with 0.5 fine left thread.

You put grease n every little part when you reassemble the pedal. I only put grease on the bearing races to make the balls stay, and then I fill the pedal body with as much grease as I think I need, and then insert the axle. The pedals are made so that this grease will be squeezed through the entire pedal body, and any excess grease will be pushed out between the bushing and the axle! Also, I've lost count on how many times I've beleived that my XTR pedals were done and ready for the trash can, but then I've decided to try servicing them, and after that they've been like new again! Amazing pedals.

I highly recommend installing the o-ring before the dust cover that keeps falling off on the pedal axle. You can put the o-ring on even now, from the thread side. It won't interfere with rotation, but it will prevent dirt from getting in, and most importantly, it will keep that stupid rubber duster from falling out on the pedal shaft.

I just got a full XTR M9100 groupset and I'm scared of riding it in extreme muddy conditions 😂😂😂

Good breakdown, I have these pedals and I pulled them apart a while back and I said to myself 'too complicated' so I degreased while all the ball bearings were still in place. I'm not a fan of these pedals, my cleats creak, they eventually get play and servicing is tedious as shown in the video. I much prefer the look x-track race pedals 👌

Great tutorial, thanks! I had problems with worn sleeve bearings/bushings in the lockbush, resulting in lateral play. Luckily I once could buy new lockbushs (these are an official spare part), but these are notoriously hard to find. Do you have any idea where to get just the sleeve bearings or their type?

Danny what interesting hub do you have there on back 🤔🙄

Can you comment on what causes lateral play in these pedals? Does the nut holding everything together loosen?

Everybody wants to know what kind of grease that is.

Well, I dont think this is a good way to service those pedals. First of all, way you installing that seal which is crucial part is wrong (Be careful, it have two sides, if you put it wrong way, it will pop out). And way you installed first round of bearings is for tutorial very sad (put it in the steel cylinder and then carefully slide in is way i would choose, than it just fit). Also i think you have that steel cylinder backwards (there is a little cone on outer side on one side).

Seriously, you didn't even set that rubber seal ring in the right place and that's why it moves and pushed away when you set the locknut. It's completely wrong to push it back like yo do with a tip type screwdrivers. The rubber ring is overexpanded and damaged soon.If you don't know where it should be sat exactly, just ask Shimano. You've been doing wrong tutorials for many years with it.
