This looks like a great upgrade to my travel bag my kit just outgrew. Something that still fits easily on an airplane but can carry a decent bit of gear as well and has a lot of the features of more serious outdoors bags.

I was excited to have received the Urban Explore 20 on Feb 29! Great Bag but I can see myself wrapping some hockey tape on the springy handles after a lot of use maybe even wrapping some hockey tape soon for extra comfort. Maybe for an upgrade some loops on the right shoulder might be good to tuck away the chest strap when not in use and to attach perhaps a caribiner. All in all a nice bag for booting around the city. I think also a small roll top compartment like the Action 30 could have been a nice feature as well ( Which I have )

This might just be my next daily driver. The details are just *chef's kiss* Especially the cable management. Absolutely love how no space is wasted, the little pocket on top of the camera cube (2:10) extra memory cards, batteries etc. Very cool. LIttle request: next time you do videos like this is it possible to have maybe a little text somewhere to indicate which size bag the model is wearing, that makes it a little bit easier to get a sense of what each size bag looks like on women vs men for example.

Love the thoughtfulness and design that goes into each Shimoda bag! Are you able to unzip the sidewalls of the 25L and 30L core units to access gear using the side access of the bag? I've tried looking through several reviews to check, but most seem to orient the camera vertically with the larger core units.

Looks great and I'll probably back. I do have a design question... Why does nearly every manufacturer have the side access flaps fold at the back panel instead of the front? Folding at the front would allow you to access any built-in org on the flap interior; allow easier and protected side access when you have something stowed and strapped in the side pocket, or have the rainfly on; let you use the flap as a sun shade when you're reviewing photos; and provide more security with the zippers toward the wearer.

highly interested. seems like perfekt size to me. removing the camera section for daily use but put it back in for trips. back access is the best. I am really interested to know how good the aluminium frame works, as I usually liek hip belts to put the weight off my shoulders onto my hips. Not sure how i feel about side access yet. I am very used to a hip belt, then turning my bag to the front and then using the back access in front of me. but I understand this is for the "Explore" lines Just based on this video, this sounds perfect. Edit: Oh now, I just found out that they are pretty heavy empty. 1.8kg for the empty 20L
@ShimodaDesigns

I would not say that is heavy for a feature filled bag, but we all have a different take on things. Aluminum frames work great.. we would have a belt with if we thought it was needed but it's not and keeps it simple and tidy. Thanks

I prefer the thinner dividers as they offer more room. I wish the urban series bags provided the option to have thinner dividers.
@ShimodaDesigns
@ShimodaDesigns 4 ай бұрын
Hi, our thinner dividers used in the mountain lines are made with compression molding. They start out the same size but are compressed in manufacturing. Presuming your camera gear is heavier than the divider, the UE divider will also compress to the needed depth. It just does it in your bag - not the factory. The UE style actually contours to the shape of your gear and is arguably a better/cozier fit for a wider range of shapes.

Can you fit a Nikon Z9 body in the Shimoda URBAN EXPLORE 30L version, when you have a laptop in the bag, too? Or only without a laptop?
@peterwaisnor2241
@peterwaisnor2241 8 ай бұрын
The Urban Explore packs are not designed to fit a large gripped body in any configuration, with or without a laptop. The Core Units are 5 inches deep, so not suitable for a Z9, which is as large as any gripped DSLR. To fit a gripped camera like a Z9, you'd need to look at our packs that fit the DSLR Core Units, such as the Explore v2 35, and the Action X40 and X50.

Imnoticed the laptop compartments on all backpack are in the front. How well is that protected? Since the camera gear is mostly accessed from the back the backpack has to kind of lay on the laptop compartment where I see potential for damage. Otherwise great bag, by far the best designed and most sensible feature-packed backpack I have seen in quite a while!
@ShimodaDesigns
@ShimodaDesigns 8 ай бұрын
Hi, depending on your LT size, you can use either front or back. Both are protected but keep in mind we are not building backpacks intended for the life of a pelican case or similar bombproof products. If you dropped your pack laptop down on a a big sharp rock or ledge, you might see damage. With that said, anything you add to the front pocket will add protection. So if that was a priority, you can could add to it. Even an extra case depending on you LT size.

@@ShimodaDesigns I think the question here for clarification is - which backpack 25L/30L sizes support a 16" laptop in both the front and rear pockets. If I'm flying on a Regional jet as seen at the 6:17 mark, depending on the size of the backpack and overhead bin space with a laptop that only fits the front pocket, the bag is obviously going to lay front side down. The weight of say a Canon R5 and accompanying lenses would put pressure on said laptop in front pocket. Flying on an Airbus A### or Boeing 7## you can store the bag in the overhead bin on its side. Does the 20L fit an iPad Pro 12.9 with the Magic Keyboard case? The 25L Explorer V2 could barely fit the iPad Pro 12.9 without a case on it, and I felt like this was a big design miss. The smaller bags should accommodate a compact portable kit, and the iPad Pro 12.9 is such a great tool for editing on the go.

Sorry I do not own either to test but from our FAQ - What are the dimensions of the rear sleeve? 20L - 7.75w x 12.5h x .7d in (19.6w x 31.7h x 1.7d cm) Will fit 11-inch iPad Pro 25L - 9w x 13.75h x .7d in (22.8w x 35h x 16d cm) Will fit 12.9-inch iPad Pro 30L - 9.5w x 15.25h x .7d in (24w x 38.7h x 16d cm) Will fit 14-inch MacBook Pro As far as design misses, we can't accomodate every use case scenario in every size bag - especially the smaller ones - we have physical limitations and tolerance to consider. In most cases making something that doesn't fit - fit... means going to the next bigger size. I know everyone wants smaller but the sizes of the tools you carry have final say regardless of what you feel smaller bags should accomodate. Have you tried using the front pocket to carry it? If it doesn't fit in the front of Explore 25 - that is the width of the bag - you would need a bigger bag.

@@ShimodaDesigns Thanks for the quick reply. I backed the UE25 based on that info. I’m one of those iPad Pro only people, and the 12.9 inch iPad is closer to the width of a 14” than it is a 13” MacBook. I had to return the Explore V2 25 because I couldn’t fit the iPad in the laptop sleeve (the rest of the bag was perfect for what I needed, just a bit too narrow for my iPad). The Explore V2 30 was just too much bag for me, so I’m hoping the UE25 will be the Goldilocks bag for me. :) Look forward to seeing it in person.

Micro Four Thirds user here. Looks like a truly well-designed and quality bag by Shimoda. I only wished the 20L version came with a smaller camera compartment cube so that there was more storage space up top to store non-camera gear like jackets, snacks, accessories, etc. Alternatively, a 15L version with smaller cube may have been perfect for my needs. FYI, I'm cross-shopping the Tenba Fulton v2 in the 14L and 10L sizes. I already have the excellent Mindshift PhotoCross 13 backpack, but want a less bulky, stealthier "daypack" style design with dual compartments for urban travel. Is that a future possibility?
@ShimodaDesigns
@ShimodaDesigns Ай бұрын
I would recommend using the available space in the Core Unit for non-camera gear. It's a nice way to keep it organized and easy to access (rather than having to stack gear on top of each). it is unlikely we will make smaller bags anytime soon. IMO they start to look like kids bags on most adults and might be a little 'over-engineered' for carry needs. We also have certain depth requirements with Shimoda bags to meet camera body sizes, so you would have to start chopping the height (or width) which leads to awkward looking ratios. Regards
@lasticonoclast
@lasticonoclast Ай бұрын
@@ShimodaDesigns Thank you for your reply. I saw from another KZfaqr that they replaced the Core Unit with a smaller version from Shimoda, so I'll explore that possibility with the 20L bag. I'm not necessarily interested in a smaller or shorter size backpack, but a bag with a practical balance between space for camera gear and for other things we like to take on our global travels. Having to store such items in the Core Unit would defeat the purpose of having a dual role "Daypack" as I could readily do that with my current Mindshift bag. The Tenba seems to achieve the sweet spot as far as balanced use of space. Now if we can just combine that with the level of quality and attention to detail of the Shimoda.

Great style of the bags 👍🏻The dividers are no longer as stable as before? Looks a little "spongy". Definitely soft, but also takes up more space, doesn't it?
@ShimodaDesigns
@ShimodaDesigns 8 ай бұрын
Hi, they are different but perform the same or a similar job IMO. Just different behavior. Yes they are thicker, but EVA dividers start this size and are compressed down and why they are as firm as the feel. It's not a 1:1 comparison but you get the same material amounts just different densities. They have worked well for me. They may not work as well in a Core Unit with out a frame though - but ours have frames. The frame keeps the integrity of the Core Unit while distributing its contents weight and prevents it from collapsing. This lends to the effectiveness of the Dividers. As for taking up more space, they conform to your gear - it's not scientific, but IMO they take up more available space - not gear space. If that makes sense.

Hi, there are some variables to consider - but in most situations that I consider normal - it should stand upright. Basically if the front sleeve out weights the main unit it may stumble (like a laptop with no camera inside). But in most situations there is more weight inside than the outer sleeve. The base has a slight angle, so this can cause it fall forward, at the same time the angle will make it a a gentle fall and more of a roll :) Hope that makes - just exercise common sense when putting it down and IMO the bag will be OK.

It looks like the core unit prevents from using the side access, right? It's the one or the other? Is there an option to use fixed separators without the core unit for side access with gear protection/organization?
@peterwaisnor2241
@peterwaisnor2241 8 ай бұрын
There are sort of three ways to set-up the Core Unit regarding the side access. The first, and most common, is to link up the side door in the Core Unit to the side zipper door in the pack so they open together in one motion, that way when you open the side door of the pack, you have immediate access to the camera in the Core Unit. The second option, for more security when traveling in an unfamiliar location, is to still have the Core Unit dividers positioned for side access, but to actually keep the Core Unit side door zipped closed inside the pack. That way, if someone were to unzip the side door to the pack without your knowledge, they would hit a wall and not have access to anything. And you can then just link up the two side doors again when you want to. The third option, which is maybe more common for someone on a birding trip where a long 200-600mm is the primary lens, is to just not set-up the Core Unit for side access at all. There is no way to attach dividers inside the pack without the use of a Core Unit. The pack, by design, has no stiff wall structure, nor does it have a velcro-compatible interior.

How stretchy is the rear laptop pocket? I'd rather pick the 25L version but my laptop is 9.5" wide while your FAQ says the rear sleeve holds up to a 9" laptop. I wont always have camera gear in there so when I don't I'd rather have the weight of a laptop closer to my back. Also, I've seen some people 'hacking' hip belt on the pack through the back in their showcases. Notably Brent Hall and Spencer Lee. Would that take the place of the hidden pocket or pass behind it? (Please dont remove the ability to do this if those were pre-production units, some of us really value hip belts)
@peterwaisnor2241
@peterwaisnor2241 8 ай бұрын
It's not a matter of the stretchiness of the rear pocket, it's that once you get to 9.5 inches, you're at the max width of the door at the zipper. The read door might not close easily. The rear pocket was not designed to be as large as the front laptop pocket.

Be aware...Shimoda says this fits a 16" laptop but it is very tight. You won't be storing and removing that laptop with one hand. If you have a case on your $3400 MacBook Pro (like I do) it's very difficult to store and remove. After the 16" laptop is in, that front pocket also gets tight and much less usable. Anything you put in the front pocket better be very thin. I think a dedicated zipper compartment would have been better than having its access be INSIDE of another compartment. FYI...The 30L seems to be no larger in the laptop compartment than the 20L
@ShimodaDesigns
@ShimodaDesigns 5 ай бұрын
Hi, with all due respect... The 25 and 30 both fits 16" MBP laptops - yes its tighter on the 25, but I think it would call a 'perfect fit' over 'very tight'. We do not make bags to pack laptop cases - but to fit the actual laptop. If that is your need you should size up to the 30L. When items are placed in the bag the spaces around it get smaller - this is just how it works when you put something in a bag. Also the 30L is a bigger bag with a larger space for the laptop - its both wider and taller than the 20 and 25 Liter sizes. Your FYI is not correct. Kind Regards Ian
@boomboomboba
@boomboomboba 5 ай бұрын
I thought the same thing about the 30L, except I received this from Shimoda explaining that I needed a bag that said it held a 17" laptop. "Sorry to hear you had an issue. You are correct that the sleeve is not intended to hold a 16” laptop with a protective cover. That would just be a different bag. A sleeve that fits a 16” laptop with a cover is a sleeve that fits a 17” laptop without a cover, which makes the entire bag wider and taller, and then it’s a different size and volume altogether." That's why I looked at the specs of the 30L hoping they mentioned a 17" laptop, but the specs still say a 16" laptop. Based on that, I figured that you didn't sell an Urban Explorer whose sleeve is for a 17" laptop since that was not mentioned in the 30L specs. This being said...I do love the bag. It's the most comfortable backpack I have ever had, and that includes the Peak Design Everyday Carry (which I didn't like at all). As for sizing up to the 30L, I supported this through Kickstarter...can I exchange my 25L for a 30L?

All of our packs can be used without the camera insert and as a regular pack. Urban Explore is a great everyday bag IMO.

I am interested in smaller size 20L for daily commute to work, it is so close to perfect except (1) I carry 16" MacBook Pro to office, but 20L don't support it (2) I only carry one fullframe camera, either ZVE1 or A7RV with standard lens attached, but the core unit is too big and lack of smaller option for just one gear. If you can solve the above two problems, then shut up and take my money!
@peterwaisnor2241
@peterwaisnor2241 8 ай бұрын
If we make the 20L pack taller and wider to fit the 16-inch laptop, then the volume increases, and it becomes 25L. That's why the 25L pack is the size that fits the 16" laptop. Regarding the Core Unit, you can always remove dividers and then the space is easily usable for non-photo gear.
@ShimodaDesigns
@ShimodaDesigns 8 ай бұрын
As that Peter fellow suggests, a Core Unit is great for other gear - considering it shelving, it will only add organization for gear that might not normally have it. Also we are talking a few cm on height and width, it's not much more than the 20.

@@cedricphoo Yes, of course. I'm not saying that no 20L pack will fit a 16-inch laptop. I'm saying the Shimoda Urban Explore pack cannot. The Peak Design pack has the laptop along its largest panel, which is the rear panel against the harness, and because of that design decision, the bag has no rear access, nor does it have a removable modular Core Unit interior. Functionally it is just an entirely different bag. Every bag design and configuration allows for a different set of fits and capabilities.

Is this bag ok when snowing?
@ShimodaDesigns
@ShimodaDesigns 8 ай бұрын
The bag is quite water resistant and comes with a rain cover. Snow for the most behaves the same as rain except when it collects in heavy storms and the pressure pushes itself through. That's a rare scenario in my opinion and one that is easily a manageable by shaking the snow off and maintaining the packs DWR coating. Otherwise I don't think you will any issue based on my experiences with snow. But I also would not move to the Arctic with it and live in an igloo ;)

The shoulder straps are too thin, I wish they are as thick and comfortable as my Tamrac Expedition 7, because with twenty some pounds of gears plus a five pounds tripod and head I have tried and still like my Tamrac better. Sorry.

Only for the Boa color way, Anthracite is still available and IMO a very beautiful option. I've mentioned it a few times now, but Boa is the instant 'want' color IMO. Anthracite is more long term. I know considering stock, it's convenient for me to feel this way and say this but I've always reached for my boa bags but I've felt a change in the last couple of weeks and the black version is starting to steal my heart. It's a complicated relationship!

Great bag, but it is defentely overpadded. I mean there is too much soft padding in it. The walls are too thick. For core unit and back side. There is no need for 2-3 cm of padding. It is waste of space inside.

Everyone is entitled to there own opinion and see where you are coming from, but the padding allows objects that might not be a perfect fit in the Core Unit(like a taller camera bodies hotshoe mount) to not put pressure into a persons back while contributing the packs overall fit and weight distribution. We do this in all of our current packs and it works well IMO.

I found answer about core unit's "not precompressed" walls in another comment. Ok, will see if they are quite the same. I didn't get your point about back wall thickness. There is one padded wall (with fine level of thickness on my opinion) in laptop pocket in my Explore v2. And only then back wall goes. I belive there was no sense to made it soooo thick. but ok, it is traveling/hiking backpack, it is fine to have a lot of back padding. I don't see reason to make that thick back wall in urban version. Or it just looks the same?
