Hmmmmm but is he? He warns Danny not to go into the room, why? Because of the scary women? What about the scary girls in the corridor, or the other room where a bear is blowing a man etc. or the crazy bartender. He also took it personally when Danny raided his mind for the info, was it because he was responsible for what happened to the woman in the Room and he didn't want Danny to find out?

@@boredfartless4221 My impression was that the room was the main source of evil in the Hotel, like the Hotel's "brain". The room would trap and possess anyone who entered it, and was an entryway to the past ghosts/inhabitants of the hotel. So once you went to Room 237, you were doomed to stay in the hotel forever and just become one of the many ghosts that inhabited it. It was also a Pandora's box of sorts, so the ghosts come spilling out if it's opened, both figuratively and literally. The picture at the end could be a clue to this (237=12 and the year in the Photo is 1921. After 237 is opened and Jack enters, he's trapped in the hotel forever, and becomes apart of the photo). It was where Danny encountered the woman who tried to strangle him (and where the hotel seduced Jack and would possess him for the remainder of the film). Like Tony tells Danny, the girls aren't real or a threat to Danny, it's just fake.

After thinking it over, you're right that it's not going to possess every person who walks in. I did some more reading (I love how everyone has different theories about this movie) and Kubrick said that Jack Torrace was "reincarnated". There was a youtube comment that pointed out that he was the hotel as well, sent out into the world to collect more "guests", or just one of the many extentions of the hotel. This jives with what Grady said about how he was always the caretaker. The hotel doesn't just choose who becomes a caretaker, everyone in that role is some reincarnated figure of the hotel's past and a reflection of their true ID. Jack is confronted not just by the things he had done in this life but in his previous lives. So if they go through Room 237, it is like they're going through a portal, an opposite world, where they become apart of the hotel's many reflections of the past, and is never meant to leave. I think when the door opens the first thing you see is a Mirror. In actually thinking about my comment, 21 is a reflection of 12 and there are tons of things that "reflect" each other through the movie. The Grady twins being a good example of this. Anyway, those are my theories. But nothing is definitive.

I think that out of all the book-vs.-film comparisons, 'The Shining' is the one I feel most conflicted about. Kubrick chose a hotel common rooms that were grand, yet somehow 'cold'. He made Ullman into a friendly manager, so there were no hard feelings between powerful boss and 'lowly' caretaker. He turned the book's nervous yet reasonably intelligent Wendy into a neurotic uneducated and very passive Wendy. He omitted the hedge animals, the elevator, and the boiler explosion (which echoed Jack's internal pressure gauge perfectly). He had Hallorann killed off, and too soon. Yet Kubrick casted Jack Nicholson and Danny Lloyd and Scatman Crothers, and I can't imagine anyone else playing their roles as effectively. I didn't much care for the 1997 miniseries, except that Wendy's character was more likeable (if not quite so memorable), and the hedge animals and the boiler made it in. And Jack Torrance's moments of compassion balanced out his bad temper and other character flaws. Stephen King has said that he really didn't like Kubrick's film. The book characters are more complex, and the roots of Jack's alcoholism and reasons behind his failures are explored. So are his mixed feelings about the Overlook and its sordid history. Kubrick's adaptation is a straight-up horror movie, though a good creepy one.

This scene doesn't mean that the other supernatural things weren't in Jack's head. In fact, the inconsistencies point towards the entire second half of the film being a huge fantasy sequence in Jack's head. In reality, it could have been a book he was writing, and then his job finished and they all went home.

Halloran had indeed seen the weird creepy shit in room 237 (217 in the book) earlier in that season. In the book, a maid (who had "a little to shine to her, but didn't know it") had seen something that freaked her out in that room, and had come running to Halloran about it. He investigated and also saw it - it freaked him out, but he was fairly sure it couldn't hurt him (like pictures in a book)...But not 100% sure...That's why he was so concerned for Danny

@@watermelonlalala This wasn't the first instance of the whisper SHONE occurring. You can actually here SHONE whispered right after Ullman the caretaker explains the Grady incident. Took me a while to figure it out. Apparently, both times were supposed to be an allegorical moment of enlightenment. Jack was just informed about the grizzly mess that occurred at the Overlook. Once the caretaker informs Jack, you can hear the whisper. It basically gets a visual representation in both scenes. The much debated office window is actually the light of God briefly shining on Jack. Informing him of what's to come, notice how Jack has the sunlight towards him. Ullman and his associate next to Jack never acknowledged the window. Just like the knives over Danny in the wideshot. Once the danger of Overlook is established, we can see the danger hanging over him. Danny has just been enlightened with the knowledge that there are others like him. You can here the whisper after Holleran first questioned him. When the audience automatically sees the wideshot, there goes the ominous knives pointed down at Danny. Hope this explains the whisper for you.

I think Halloran knows room 237 is the heart of the evil presence in the hotel & he senses Danny's abilities have the power to awaken that presence, hence his strong fear when Danny mentions that room..brilliantly done.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I've often wondered if Hallorann secretly took it upon himself to use his abilities to protect the people at the hotel from the sinister forces in it, and when he left, they sensed his absence and attacked. Maybe he figured that with only three people there, they wouldn't be in any danger. Again, just somethjng I've thought about.

Well, in the book, when Hallorann explains the shining to Danny, he is surprised, almost fearful about how powerful Danny's abilities seem to be. Then, going by what Hallorann says in this scene about "other folks" that can shine, although "they don't know it or don't believe it", I am not sure if Hallorann can provide, say, a blanket protection to the guests from the hotel's evil spirits in general. If indeed, in the universe of The Shining, that "some [people] shine, and some don't", then the non-shining individuals may be either oblivious to the Overlook's paranormal torments, or attribute them to something other, more mundane phenomena. However, if Hallorann has encountered prior guests or staff members who can "shine," so to speak, he may have been able to communicate to them and warn them of the hotel's sinister presence and power, just as he talks about it with Danny, or gave them tips and advice on how to deal with the apparitions. So he might have helped protect others on a more individualized, case-by-case basis. Sorry to ramble; this is just my own interpretation. I'm just a big fan of Kubrick's films, and i am fascinated with great cinema in general.

Always thought Scatman Crothers did some really terrific work here - he even pulls off the famous signature "Kubrick stare" beautifully. A lovely actor with genuine screen presence, Crothers was almost driven to tears with Kubrick's obsessive multiple takes. But this, of course, is one of the key scenes in the film, and you can almost feel the intense concentration coming from behind the camera. And Crothers really sells it.

Yea, 'disturbs' is a good way to put it. As if day-to-day there's a natural balance between people and ghosts, but the presence of 'telapathoid's' offsets that. Perhaps their presence reminds them of the fact that they're dead, and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

SPOILER ALERT. See the movie first! It's so worth the watch several times! For those who have seen it, read on.... Pause it at 2:56 Kubrick was a genius. Look how he framed this shot. First he shows Hallorann and Danny mirroring each other with interlocked hands and posture. Then he shows us entire elements into the movie in this one scene. The most obvious one is the long knives pointing towards Danny. Then the freezer door (Jack freezes to death) and they are all kind of "locked up" in this hotel and finally at the top right...and EXIT sign. They need to exit...fast!

pointless to compare different mediums. What works in prose doesn't necessarily transpose well to film. You also have to realize that a film is usually anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours at most. Reading the Shining takes quite a bit longer than that.

MP R Have you even read the book??? You don't think the psychological horror parts like the hedge animals or the child at the playground is needed??? just as books sometimes need extra thoughts and conversations to tell a story (due to the fact that you can't see what's happening with your own eyes), movies should have less of that imo. in a movie you don't need to "tell" as much, you need to show. bad movies tell when they should just show. (think a villain monologuing their whole evil plan). actually now that i think of it, ledger's joker was a good twist on the monologuing arch-villain. yeah he talked a lot and even talked about his "plan," but what he said wasn't as important as what it revealed about him. you realized his story would keep changing and his words showed more and more how crazy but insanely smart and cunning he was. that's a good example of a character who talks a lot, but is still very compelling because you aren't able to really quantify what he's really about entirely. (until wise alfred gives his insight into him)

Scatman was awesome, and I'm glad he got a good part in a Kubrick film. He got the part because he and Nicholson worked together in 'Cuckoo's Nest' and Nicholson recommended him. He did have a near-breakdown while shooting the scene when he lists everything that's in the pantry (Kubrick called for 60 or 70 takes causing Scatman to scream "For God's sake Mr. Kubrick, what do you WANT?!") but in the documentary about The Shining he tears up when talking about Kubrick and says "I love that man!" probably because he knew Kubrick was making him deliver a performance beyond anything he'd done before.

I believe it. I read an interview Scatman gave when the movie premiered. He said even scenes that are generally mundane (ie: walking down the hallway) required many takes because Kubrick wanted the film to be "perfect." Kubrick was also interviewed: he claimed that he rushed in making "Paths of Glory" - often regarded as a masterpiece. He recently viewed it and found it "full of mistakes."

I decided to re-read the book starting last week, simply because it was the scariest book, beside Salem's Lot, that scared the crap out of me in the early 1980's. So, I have a love/hate relationship with the film. It's so far removed from what King was driving home, page after page of the most frightening behaviors, but Kubrick's film still has a place in my heart. For one thing, the score is so good. He just twisted it into a modern day horror story and did well. THE Tv movie wasn't good but, at least it stayed with the brilliant imagery of the novel. THIS HERE Halloran scene, in the novel is SO MUCH BETTER than this scene in Kubrick's film. Halloran has Danny in the passenger seat of his car. Wendy see's it through the window of the Hotel and freaks out. Then she realizes that they're just talking together. Halloran asks Danny to give him his biggest psychic shout out, Danny does and Halloran almost has a brain tumor. In the book, Halloran tells Danny to shout out at him,. as loud as he can while he's in Florida, if any trouble happens at the Hotel. Missing from the film, along with other endearing horror scenes. Like Jack, near death comes back into consciousness, and he tells Danny that he loves him, and calls him "Doc." Then he tells "Doc" to run and transforms back into a murderer. Missing from the film.

2:46 i like how Hallorann pauses before answering when Danny asks if he's scared of the overlook (again at 3:14 when Danny asks "is there something bad here" and one other time re: room 237 4:21). we see so little of Halloran but to me he's in a sense the most interesting character... the most mysterious. like he's some mystical guardian. though he seems visibly disturbed - in a state of disbelief i think - by what Danny has been able to sense about the hotel through shining. i should probably read the book to get a better sense of what Hallorann is all about

The shining is E.S.P (telepathy). . It's very clear in the book, but this scene is the movie's version of describing it, and it's way more vague. The father, Jack, never had the shining. The overlook hotel, however, is like a living entity. a haunted house you can think of it. It communicates to Jack and others via the souls that have perished inside its walls. Someone commented that the overlook hotel doesn't shine, it only reflects. I'd say that's a pretty accurate description..
