Angus Lamont Getting both versions of each film would’ve been nice, yes. But in classic Godzilla style, ToHo doesn’t own the rights some of the American cuts of their own films.. including whatever bonus content those releases came with, which is a shame. But that’s how the cookies crumbles. Maybe one day!

Angus Lamont Criterion has commentary for pretty much all of these films though and they’re the most in depth ones you’ll find. They might be on the disc. If not, some are online.
@GamerMinilla4 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about dubs when you mean "both versions", you don't collect much Criterion. Criterion doesn't usually put dubs in their releases of foreign films. Ever. It's a complete shock we got as many dubs as we did. Dubs don't hold any value when it comes to the preservation and showcasing of films as they were intended to be seen (which is Criterion's whole reason for being), in fact, dubs do the exact opposite of that. Dubs are the reason Godzilla is a laughing stock among normie film buffs who aren't already fans of the franchise. Dubs are the reason Godzilla has the reputation he does that the Heisei, Millennium, Reiwa series or even the MonsterVerse has yet to rectify. Dubs are a Plague on films, and complaining about the lack of them in a release meant for serious film enthusiasts is asinine.
@bradbailey54814 жыл бұрын
Devout Mothra Follower Devout Mothra Follower he wasn’t talking about dubs. With that being said, I agree. However, dubbing wasn’t initially meant for disrespect. The first Japanese film to get dubbing was Akira Kurosawa’s “Rashomon.” Originally, the planned on using subtitles, but opted against it to appeal to a wider audience (literacy rates and what not). So initially, during that era, if a film were to be dubbed, it was considered an honor on the studios’ part (despite how cheesy it is and how poorly said dubbing has aged). I am against it in the current era (for films, not animation), but at the time a different outlook was held on dubs, and was seen as necessary by the studio. A lot of this information is covered in David Kalat’s audio commentary on the original Godzilla American re-edit and dub (which Criterion published and currently streams on their channel... they publish dubs if it is culturally significant). So I agree, but you need to step back and understand why dubbing in the 40s-60s occurred.

The Video Deity Invasion of Astro-Monster, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla all have their Dubs and original cuts, the rest are all just the Japanese cuts with no dubs.

Why do people want the English dubs so badly? I would think you would want the movies as they were originally intended. Unless, I suppose, you memorized the english versions as a kid, or enjoy looking at poorly dubbed movies. Otherwise, I personally can't see the appeal.

I guess it’s the sense of a true “complete” collection from those who don’t have the dvds, VHS copies or they just wanted them on blu-Ray.. which I can’t see not happening outside of this collection. As for those expecting the dubs.. the website and the trailer told ya what was coming lol

There IS no appeal, friend. Criterion doesn't usually put dubs I their releases of foreign films.

Why are these the movies included? They're common as hell and have been easy to find forever The 80s and 90's movies are what everybody wants
@ShinRobjira4 жыл бұрын
A decent portion of the Showa era hadn't been reissued on disc for nearly a decade, officially at least. They were hard to find for good prices on top of that. The Heisei movies are pretty readily available in full aside from Godzilla Vs Biollante.

@@ShinRobjira The bulk of them are cheap in bargain bins but the 80s and 90s ones are always hard to find and cost 20$ or more each

Son of Godzilla & Terror of Mecha-Godzilla averaged out at $100+ on amazon and eBay for a loooong time because no one had the rights to re-release them. Sometimes they went for even more than this set alone. The heisei series being scattered about double feature blu ray releases and random DVD collections from SONY for $20 or less really isn’t a problem at all.
@BF-Gator4 жыл бұрын
@@ShinRobjira Terror of mechagodzilla was 3$ when I got it 3-4 years ago Just because amazon is overcharging and ripping everyone off doesn't mean the movies are worth that much
@ShinRobjira4 жыл бұрын
I was just stating some of the movies were hard to find, out of print and overpriced.. it happened more with the Showa era than the Heisei era, hence why this collection exists.

People complain about it being big?!? What's wrong with it being big it looks 😍 especially for it size

I imagine just finding a place for it seems to be most people’s worry. Which is understandable. But, c’mon. Godzilla deserves that shelf presence!
