despite the first pitch homer, i feel like today was a success for him, a 94 splitter is fucking insane

Fujinami was a premier pitcher in his first four years of his career. He was a lot thinner back then and in shape. He changed his delivery for some reason and that's when his struggles began. He rebounded last year. He moved to the MLB and part of it was nerves as well. He has recently been slowly assimilating.

Didn’t he change his delivery because he was hitting the heck out of batters ?

@TheTitofan1 he changed his style, and then he started hitting batters. But he never really got out of it. He started to focus mainly on two pitches. While he improved and made the Orioles decide to trade for him, he became a more predictable pitcher. 102 mph is hard to hit, but it becomes easier to hit when you throw too much of it. He got into trouble when he mixes slow pitches and follows it with faster pitches like his 4 seam fastball. He has a great splitter. But, he gets erratic after throwing it sometimes. Sometimes not. He really needs to bring back his cutter. Mix cutter and splitters more often. He throws a 4 seamer 56% of the time, which is too much. An easier pitch to implement would be a change up, which is a slower fast ball. He likes to throw it 100 plus all the time. Implementing a change up could change his career. Change ups are rarely used in Japan, but having a change up in his arsenal would be a game changer. He throws 102 mph, along with a changeup and his already awesome splitter, he could be key in the Orioles quest for a championship.

Baltimore might be a good place for him to master MLB and perfect his pitching again.

3:48 the female reporter failed geography. Oakland to Japan is 1600 miles shorter than Baltimore to Japan.

Really want to see him succeed. Need to ease him in though. Putting him in the high leverage situation against the rays probably wasn’t the best for his 2nd game. Didnt help that the fielder totally muffed the ball to end the inning

I hope a change of scenery help him, he’s not a rookie at the age of 29, hope he can get that era down and eat up some innings!

They'll have to call him "Fugi", the character from the 60's classic comedy McHales Navy.

Fuji is the same age as Otani and they have been rivals since high school. Fuji was the better pitcher in high school and for a while in the NPB, but then he developed control problems and became unstable. In the NPB, he was so prone to dead pitches (especially against right-handed hitters) that opposing teams created a legend that they would not use their leading right-handed hitters on days when Fuji pitched. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bpZpjLxirLa8e4E.html MLB balls are more slippery than NPB balls, I am afraid that one day someone will get hurt.

At the Athletics induction press conference, he gave a one-minute speech in English with beautiful pronunciation. I suspect that he speaks better English than the interpreter sitting next to him.
