Just finished reading "How to Render" and this really brings a lot of the thought processes together nicely. Knowing the rules is not too hard, but applying them so consistently takes a lot of practice.

Yes. When you fill a path to a layer you get a very clean edge. It gives you a much better edge than making it a selection and then painting in it. Also paths allow you to refine the line drawing.

Option one is already full and I will not have time to teach another section this year. Option 2 gets you 100 days of access to all the tutorials ~18 hours of lecture demos and the layered PSD files and notes + reference photos. I think you also get to view the crits from the live course.

This was done using a Wacom Intuos 4 and my lap top. In my studio I work on a Cintiq.

Fantastic film - thanks Scott. Learned two very valuable lessons - darkening the values for the colourize to work properly and the colour balance tool for cool shadows etc. Now i just need to be able to remember it all!

Well as far as I know, paths are used a lot for selections, especially curved ones which are hard to do with another selection tool. When you have a path you can make a selection of it, and save that selection. That allows you to go back in those selections you made before without having to re-select everything you did in the early stages :)

I have a Macbook Pro for demos when I travel. I use an Intuos 4 with it. I upgrade lap tops every 2 to 3 years it seems. I just get the best thing I can afford at the time. My studio machine is an older Mac Pro tower with a 30" screen and a 21" Cintiq.

Scott mentioned that the reflective rendering info from the schoolism course is actually all in his "how to render" book coming out soon. Less money because it is static pictures instead of watching him paint realtime but same info. If you go on amazon right now you can preorder the book and save even more.

if we use too many paths, it will end up looking like a cad 3d, model .Please let us know how to achieve a more of artistic free hand feel, while avoiding making it look like a 3d model and pitfalls to avoid while achieving this, thanks

Hey Scott, I am following your gnomon lectures and was wondering: - what ellipse templates are you using/ should a student get. - what type/brand of scanner do you recommend to scan in black/white sketches for use in Photoshop ? (if possible within the 200 dollar range).

Is there a reason why bounce light from the sides of the car do not bleed similar hues onto the ground plane? Is this to keep the focus on the car instead of the entire environment? Or maybe you wouldn't see those because it's a skylight? Great video as usual!

For the best result, manually is always the way to go. But there are other quick options to getting "paths" on a shape.

amazing sketch, i just have 2 questions. 1. did you use a template for the ellipses of the wheels? the lines look so fine and precise, i always get fuzzy lines. 2. is there any free programm i could use for this kind of sketches? i dont need all the fancy functions of Photoshop etc, i qould just like to try it out.

Yes, ellipse guides used on the pen sketch. Maybe try Sketchbook Pro.

All the steps are in my next book, How to Render. This video was just a high level demo of layering strategy in Photoshop. Showing every step here would be about a 2 or 3 hour video.

Every now and then (1 in 100 sketches) I get the perspective just right, but most of the time I can't quite get it right. Do you have any videos about getting perspective right? Thanks

hahaha same here, but if you can master that then Photoshop is easy easy infact more fun and saves you ton load of money vs buying £200 worth of copic or pro markers :D ( well Scott used Pastels in DVD but same stuff goes with markers)

nice tutorial, but what bugged me is that you did not adjust the bakes color to your car color , cold yellows dont go with warm yellows / oranges

Is it possible to be a concept artist/ digital painter by being self taught? Im 16 so ive got time to train myself. I really want to become an artist but i doubt art school will be an option. im thinking am i just wasting my time. are you self taught btw? If its possible not going to art school could you give some advice in to which areas i should be working on like anatomy,perspective and form. currently im learning the human figure. what else should i consider? Any advice will be appreciated:)
