Awesome video, exactly what I was looking for! One thing I'd love to know more about is importing a slightly modified classic... In my case I want to import my 1987 Capri, however a few years ago I dropped in a larger version of the same engine, it's basically the same block but different heads and intake, reading the pre 1989 rules makes me nervous about it, do I need to be worried?

Thanks for this video Scott. The biggest concern I have about importing a car from the States or any country I would imagine is Asbestos testing. Did you go through this test and the rectification? Also to get my import approval Certificate, I have to wait 10 working days for the Department of infrastructure to ceritfy my 100 points of identification. Then once that is done another 30 to 60 working days for the approval to be processed. But, this is New South Wales, not Western Australia. So much red tape here in Sydney. Cheers!

Hi Scott great video about 15 years ago i imported a large bus (1988)from Japan it was relatively easy process for a complete novice, now im trying to ship a motorhome out of the states, obviously too big for a shipping container so RORO is the only way. my question is have you used that mode of shipping as they're talking nearly 30k am i being shafted?, my nearest sea port would be Fremantle and stateside Long Beach. any thoughts or people to try to get a better deal? the motorhome and bus are pretty much identical in volume and back in 06 the Japanese sea freight was less than 7k.....

No changes except for the shipping costs. Customs seems to vary state to state on how long they take to clear a car but thats about it. Sorry I don't have any recommendations for Japan. One interesting fact about Japanese cars is they have to pass a radiation test before export.

Hi :) The certification compliance is done once you are ready to register the car, you can take as long as you like but it needs to be done before the car goes over the pits for inspection. For a personal import you have to demonstrate that you used the car for 12 months minimum overseas so I don't think you'll get away with it for 3 months. Shipping fee have sky rocketed over the last 2 years but so have car prices (they have started to soften now though). It really depends on the car and registration requirements but its getting harder to do now and make profit but there is some opportunity with some risk

@OutlawGarage
@OutlawGarage 3 жыл бұрын
I've never done it to be honest but I understand it is very difficult. The car has to have an inspection and need a certificate that the asbestos has been removed by an authorised person. The import permit department will provide more advice as the rules are constantly changing.

Blake Gillon if it’s a personal car then you need to have owned it for 12 months. New cars may require further approval but we have never done that. Leonard Zech you don’t seem to have to do this anymore. What we had to do was sign a declaration about the car not having any asbestos. Yeah, you missed a few items. The car must have refrigerant gases removed and certified as asbestos free before shipping. You also failed to mention that the valuation for import duty is unrelated to the purchase price and is assessed on local Australian market value INCLUDING all costs involved with shipping. We get screwed from every direction.
@OutlawGarage
@OutlawGarage 2 ай бұрын
At the time I didn’t need an asbestos cert but that seems to be part of the standard process now. Depending how long you have owned the car for you can argue against an Australian market value assessment, I’ve never had one based on the cars I’ve imported but I’ve heard of new purchases being picked up on this now.

Import Tesla’s and tell aussies about it to really up your subs. I’m thinking of doing it if possible because they are just ridiculously expensive here but with so much sun hours we’re all nuts not to own a Tesla.

The problem here is infrastructure. A lot of apartment blocks in the cities don't have charging points. Great idea but the infrastructure really needs to catchup here in Australia. I have no idea what the demand is for them here, they seem to be a luxury car, probably because of the price.
@Riskninjaz

@@OutlawGarage yea above 70k you have to pay lux tax. The government should be subsidising them not smashing people for wanting to go green! Agree on infrastructure though. But why would Elon invest here when the gov has created such a high barrier to entry.

Compliance is around $300 on top of rego depending on the rules yo imported under, for some its zero. on a car over 25 years old you get a discount on tax so its 5% + 5%

Raag Mittal the tax is applied to the value the importer declares. It is somewhat checked when importing but not in detail.

The best thing to do is apply for an import permit for $50 and see. Registration will be an issue on a new car being LHD as it might need to be converted and it would need an engineers certificate. Anything with a new car is really hard.
