Shipping firms stop Red Sea routes after attacks | BBC News

A number of freight companies have stopped their ships traveling through the Red Sea after being targeted by Houthis - an Iran-backed rebel movement - in Yemen.
The Red Sea is one the world's most important routes for oil and fuel shipments, as well as consumer goods. It is the route by which ships can reach the Suez Canal - itself a major shipping lane. Avoiding it means vessels must take much longer routes, for example navigating around southern Africa.
Officials in Egypt have insisted that traffic is flowing normally through the Suez Canal, despite the recent attacks.

Yep, that route above Russia (11000 nautical miles versus the Suez 17000 from Shanghai to Rotterdam) is looking better and better.

@@implodingbaby for most of the year, but the operational period is increasing. Analysts have been saying for over a decade that it's going to become a major shipping route due to global warming. Why do you think when the Russkies invaded Ukraine a few big-whigs immediately went to: let's split up Russia as revenge. What benefit would a desintegrating Russia bring that could offset the risk of nukes in the hands of unstable small republics: much easier to deal with small republics to gain control of the passage via soft power than mutually assured destruction via a nuclear war with the entire federation.

It may be work for ice breakers but normal ships aren't going north of Russia during the winter

@@stevec6427 Certainly won't be this year. But 11000 miles versus war and 17000 miles... along with Bab Al Mandab looking more and more like a risk thanks to bad US policy... and the Chinese naval base the only thing safeguarding it? Ice Breakers and global warming are just two reasons why we continue a war of proxy trying to make Putin the economic bad guy.

Ships that usually sail up there are designed with it in mind unlike your typical container ship found in normal shipping lanes. Also with the western sanctions against Russia for their invasion of Ukraine, you can forget about sailing through Russian waters.

Hmmm, doesn't the RN have an horrendously expensive 'carrier' and task group that could solve this? Or, is this a pond too far for the RN? Send Wills there with it to make sure things go right, and get some mileage on both of those 'national treasures'. BTW, the 'extra 3000 miles' is only an issue until you get the 'shipping pipeline' filled up with vessels, then the arrivals and returns just track as before.

Sure you guys try to do something against.Yemen. But what you guys don’t think about the issue in a Palestine. There is the issue link to the ships. And you guys know Yemen declare war to Israel. So what is so hard to understand?
