Here's to Life is a 1992 studio album by Shirley Horn, arranged by Johnny Mandel.
Shirley Valerie Horn (May 1, 1934 -- October 20, 2005) was an American jazz singer and pianist. Horn collaborated with many jazz greats including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Toots Thielemans, Ron Carter, Carmen McRae, Wynton Marsalis and others. She was most noted for her ability to accompany herself with nearly incomparable independence and ability on the piano while singing, something described by arranger Johnny Mandel as "like having two heads", and for her rich, lush voice, a smoky contralto, which was described by noted producer and arranger Quincy Jones as "like clothing, as she seduces you with her voice". Although she could swing as strongly as any straight-ahead jazz artist, Horn's reputation rode on her exquisite ballad work.
Shirley Horn was born and raised in Washington, D.C.. Encouraged by her grandmother, an amateur organist, Horn began piano lessons at the age of four. Aged 12, she studied piano and composition at Howard University, later graduating from there in classical music. Horn was offered a place at the Juilliard School, but her family could not afford to send her there. Horn formed her first jazz piano trio when she was twenty. Horn's early piano influences were Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson and Ahmad Jamal, and moving away from her classical background, Horn later said that "Oscar Peterson became my Rachmaninov, and Ahmad Jamal became my Debussy." She then became enamored with the famous U Street jazz area of Washington (largely destroyed in the 1968 riots), sneaking into jazz clubs before she was of legal age.
Horn first achieved fame in 1960, through her association with Miles Davis. Davis' praise had particular resonance in two respects: because he was so highly respected as a musician, and because he rarely offered public praise for fellow musicians at that time. Horn had, though, recorded several songs with violinist Stuff Smith in 1959 both as a pianist and a singer. After her discovery by Davis, she recorded albums on different small labels in the early 1960s, eventually landing contracts with larger labels Mercury Records and Impulse Records. She was popular with jazz critics, but did not achieve significant popular success.
Quincy Jones attempted to make Horn into a pure vocalist in several recording sessions, something he later hinted may have been a mistake. Horn was also disturbed by the changes in popular music in the 1960s following the arrival of The Beatles. Largely rejecting efforts to remake her into a popular singer, she stated: "I will not stoop to conquer". From the late-1960s, she concentrated on raising her daughter Rainy with her husband, Shepherd Deering (whom she had married in 1955), and largely limited her performances to her native Washington, D.C.
Miles Davis made a rare appearance as a sideman on Horn's 1991 album You Won't Forget Me. Although she preferred to perform in small settings, such as her trio, she also recorded with orchestras, as on the 1992 album Here's to Life, the title song (lyrics by Phyllis Molinary, music by Artie Butler) of which became her signature song. A video documentary of Horn's life and music was released at the same time as "Here's To Life" and shared its title. At the time, arranger Johnny Mandel commented that Horn's piano skill was comparable to that of the noted jazz great Bill Evans. A follow-up was made in 2001, named You're My Thrill.
Shirley Horn kept for twenty five years the same rhythm section: Charles Ables (bass) and Steve Williams (drums). Don Heckman wrote in the Los Angeles Times (February 2, 1995) about "the importance of bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Williams to Horn's sound. Working with boundless subtlety, following her every spontaneous twist and turn, they were the ideal accompanists for a performer who clearly will tolerate nothing less than perfection".
No complaints and no regrets.
I still believe in chasing dreams and placing bets.
But i have learned that all you give is all you get
So give it all you got.
I had my share, I drank my fill, and even though
I'm satisfied I'm hungry still
To see what's down another road, beyond the hill
And do it all again.
So here's to life and all the joy it brings.
Here's to life for dreamers and their dreams.
Funny how the time just flies.
How love can go from warm hellos to sad goodbyes
And leave you with the memories you've memorized
To keep your winters warm.
For there's no yes in yesterday.
And who knows what tomorrow brings or takes away.
As long as I'm still in the game I want to play
For laughs, for life, for love.
So here's to life and every joy it brings.
Here's to life, for dreamers and their dreams.
May all your storms be weathered,
And all that's good get better.
Here's to life, here's to love, here's to you.
May all your storms be weathered,
And all that's good get better.
Here's to life, here's to love, here's to you.

I heard this song for the first time a few years ago, driving a company truck back to the office and playing a local jazz station. I was in the Bay Area, Ca. and it always seemed to match the mood of the city. This song came on as I approached the bay bridge, and I just started crying. Hit me like a ton of bricks. Life’s been moving faster since then, but when I listen to this song, I’m reminded that it can still be savored.

I've been surrounded by so much pain and torment in the short 23 years I've been alive. I've been plagued by loss, living alone and for myself most of my life, being abandoned by family. I suffer from pessimism and loneliness. This song struck a chord with me in such a spiritual way, it actually gave me hope. I can see this song being played when I get married and slow dance with my partner. I also want it played at my funeral. May we all inspire hope and joy like this song has with me.

Imagine a 16 yr old kid, who was a big jazz fan and loved it.. then play's the radio station and this comes on.. he falls in love with the voice and the composing of this.. back then there was no shazam.. all you can do is ask around the older generation which were jazz musicians who once lived in New Orleans in their age of youth. Needless to say I bought this cassette shortly after and played the entire album.. I still love her voice and it still holds a special place in my heart and mind. Still love jazz music to this day..

25 years from the first version. This song entered in my heart and surely will stay there all life long. I bought that record at that time, and it was, from the first time I heard this track, a great standard. A timeless classic, especially because of this incredible arrangement. Thank you Johnny Mandel. The lyric is so philosophycally deep, poignant, total. Everybody can recognize himself in this song. It is a poetic portrait of human life, written with simple but meaningful words, so meaningful to become trascendent. This is the reason why who listens for this song will never forget it. It's a small /big miracle of absolute beauty. Something else. Surely Shirley understood it immediately. After this song our life enriched and became happier. Thanks to Shirley, Artie and the late lyricist. Thanks to music.

This song became Shirley's theme song, she performed it at many concerts. (The lyrics are so meaningful and poignant!) Just lovely, as is the orchestra here! She was not on the piano on this number, having just had surgery on her foot from complications of diabetes, which later took her life. One of the most underrated performers of her era, partly because she did not feel the need to travel all over the world! She didn't need to, she always had a rapt audience whenever she performed, a grand talent and artist. Other musicians always wanted to work with her, she was that kind of an artist!

Patti Labelle performed this song yesterday on the TODAY show for a Mothers Day Special Show and did an amazing job. So much so, it intrigued me to search for the original version of this song and singer....I must admit I am in awe by Shirley Horn's vocals and this song. Her version is so raw, touching and even better! I have been made a fan.

I agree, donaldcc, I only wish I had discovered Shirley Horn far sooner than I did, but I'm making up for lost time now! I love her voice, her interpretation, her piano playing and her orchestra when she has one -- ALL so good. Makes me feel so much more calm when I listen to her. Although I prefer her terrific ballads, I know she can do jazz with the best of them -- she's a great talent... I wish she was still around, I never got to hear in person, but am enjoying these recordings immensely!

A phenomenal moment in jazz history. So sad that now, as then, the best are often ignored and trivialized, and left on the shelf, to be discovered by those who search hard enough.

"Here's to Life" became Shirley's song, she owned it! No one sings it like she does and it kind of became her theme song. With Mandel arranging and a great orchestra, Shirley on piano and vocal, it just can't be beat!

This recording was just played as an opening of a memorial service for a special friend who passed suddenly. He loved life and lived life fully. We all knew why this song was chosen, and it made us all cry. I hear songs like this --the melody and lyrics and I wonder to myself whether a young person listening to music that is so different if there would be a moment they take to slow down, really listen, and appreicate this for its beauty and magic.

За жизнь No complaints and no regrets I still believe in chasing dreams and placing bets For I have learned that all you give is all you get So give it all you've got I had my share, I drank my fill And even though I'm satisfied, I'm hungry still To see what's down another road, beyond the hill And do it all again So here's to life and all the joy it brings Yes, here's to life and dreamers and their dreams Funny, funny how the time just flies How love can go from warm hello's to sad goodbyes And leave you with the memories you memorize To keep your winters warm But there's no yes in yesterday And who knows what tomorrow brings or takes away As long as I'm still in the game I wanna play For laughs, for life, for love So here's to life and all the joy it brings Yes, here's to life and dreamers and their dreams May all your storms be weathered And all that's good get better Here's to life, here's to love, here's to you
