Billy Hart!!! I recognized his cymbal beat from the first two notes. Nobody played better piano for themselves than Shirley IMO and very few people sang on her level, period.

Billy supposedly got Horn her contract with SteepleChase, which was really the rebirth of her career after 15 years of raising her daughter and playing live mostly around Washington D.C. (she also released an LP in 1973 that got very little attention). It took 13 years for her to really achieve international success, but Billy got that ball rolling back in 1978. He and Buster Williams play wonderfully on her 1978 album "A Lazy Afternoon".

What a superb, beautiful rendition of an old Carpenter's song, the lyrics are incredible in this song. Shirley does it justice for sure, unique and rich! She has her own special style, just lovely.

This performance is from the 1981 Northsea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Netherlands, which featured another DC-based artist, saxophonist Buck Hill. Both Shirley and Buck wound up releasing LPs on SteepleChase Records. Bassist, by the way, is the late Charles Ables, a long time friend of mine.

I agree -- it gets me right to the core! Shirley is an incomparable talent, her slow, sensual style is SO soothing! I love the way she sings the Leon Russell's "A Song for You" -- especially the lyrics; "I love you in a place where there's no space or time, I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine. And when my life is over, remember when we were together, we were alone and I was singing this song for you." That can really grab you!

FYI, song #2 is called a song for you. A live version is on the "I Love You, Paris 1961" cd. She does it with a song called "Goodbye." That whole cd is one of my all time favorite cds!

Noisy drums...this borders on blasphemy. The drummer is none other than the great Billy Hart, on of the great innovators of jazz drums, particularly noted for his oftentimes lyrical/melodic expression on the instrument. And his son, Lorca Hart, is a noted drummer in his own right (based now, I think, in the Bay area). So let's check these records before we critique now...bro.

I think it's a question of the mix that went on tape back then. If someone had levelled the drums down it would sound mellow as probably ment. So the idiot is not the drummer but the sound engineer. ;-D

@@siralfredramsey It's interesting how far her vocal mic is placed from her mouth. I don't know if it's a condenser or a dynamic mic, but I'm used to seeing singers with a mic about twice that close. The vocal on "Song for You" sound rich and clear, so I guess Shirley knew what she was doing here.
