She was certainly ahead of her time talking about manifesting in the 80's. And ending with "I deserve this" was brilliant. Yes she did.

Oh grow up you. Manifesting is a LIE, PR bubble of nothingness, big wordsalad that is sold at industrial scale to naive fools like you. People don't manifest illness, war, misery, abuse, starvation... You wanna think you're in control, go ahead. Wait till life suprises you. Look around, and think how much of this is ''manifested'', did I manifest lifelong illness, tell me? Do you not realize how callous this ridiculous belief is?

@@grandmalovesmebest Shirley MacLaine's big problem Is that in her heyday she was completely overshadowed by superstars like Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn who were payed more and were way more popular, however this late Oscar maybe is One of the reasons of her incredibile career longevity, she is still working on a regular basis while Audrey virtually retired in 1967 and Sophia has been appearing on the screen occasionally from the end of the 70's up to a few years ago. Elizabeth too virtually retired before she was 50 years old

The death scene in terms is simply one of the most amazing scenes in cinematic history. From the "look" from Debra to the background music even. But, the interaction between Shirley and Jeff in the scene is what does it for me. Throughout the movie their characters relationships with each other was tumultuous but yet they hugged still. Man this whole movie is something else indeed.

Both performances were wonderful. Even though I wasn't a fan of hers beforehand, Shirley's performance was so earnest I thought for a solid two hours that she was my actual mother. Not only did I think that Debra was beautiful but this was the first performance of hers that I had ever seen, and her performance was so adorable that she melted my heart and made me fall in love with her (I often joke that she probably has a 3D printed copy of Shirley's Oscar at home).

Shirley MacLaine's character in "Terms of Endearment" was eccentric, with any number of unpredictable characteristics and foibles that had to be played convincingly. Her role as Aurora was much more of a challenge than Debra Winger's role as Emma. I would imagine that Shirley's brief moment with Debra as she headed to the podium to accept her Oscar was one in which she graciously acknowledged how close the vote between them must have been. I was surprised to recall that this was Shirley MacLaine's only Oscar for Best Actress. She certainly deserved one earlier on, particularly for her performance in "The Apartment".

Being good is not the same as being nice, Shirley Maclaine moved me in this movie and I think made the movie, she if anyone 'deserved' an oscar or in this case the oscar. Whether you think her a good or bad mother or her daughter a good or bad daughter is a bit beside the point. It is not a morality contest.

Seeing Shirley with her daughter makes me glad that no matter the problems between them, they will always have this great memory of Shirley winning Best Actress for her role as a mother in a mother-daughter movie, and her real daughter was her Oscar date. When Shirley moves on, this clip will be the one we'll see over and over again, for sure.

What wonderful performances this year! I knew about the outstanding performances from both Debra Winger and Shirley MacLaine in Terms of Endearment (Shirley MacLaine so deserved the Oscar), but I forgot that Silkwood came out at about this time, too! Meryl Streep was also amazing in her performance (as always)!

We don't see standing ovations (or very rarely) in Oscar ceremonies prior to the mid to late 80s. It's a shame especially in cases like this where one would have been extremely appropriate.
