Today we're taking a look at three different but related Shiros: the NeOn Lite, NeOn Zero, and the NeOn R20. We'll take a close look at how they all compare and differe, and talk through a ton of little details of how the NeOn has evolved over time! These are INCREDIBLE, next-level knives known for their exceptional milling and small details, so there's so many neat things to look at!

This instantly became a favourite of mine. AND a keeper - that happens very rarely with me, as you know, almost never. What it means is that I love the knife unreservedly, and with the Neon Zero I do. Just love love love it!

Awesome review man, I didn’t realize that was the original packaging. I feel the box and presentation of the AD20 is similarly if not more underwhelming.

What a great review. I have 5 shiros and a hati gen 3 coming. So addicted to these knives. I really enjoyed how detailed you break things down and agree on the a lot of the negatives you mention. I only have one Neon but on my F3 I had to train myself where to keep my thumb. Too high it won't close, too low and you miss it and that blade gets you. Not fun. It was a problem my first couple weeks but I adjusted and it hasn't happened since.

@@KnifeNerdery Thanks for responding! That is a hard question! I think for the looks it has to be the Quantum 2 or the F95 zero. I just love the look of the titanium and the intricate milling that is in your face. But as far as feel in the hand I think I have to go with my F3 in green micarta. Its just a little thicker and fills my hand better and the micarta provides a nice grip. EDC probably the neon for its size and lightweight. I think I want to get an F3 in carbon fiber and that will be my last one. Until the next generation ones drop and I dont think I will be strong enough to resist lol. Keep up the great work and I am glad I found your channel (I have and like non shiros too). Sorry I didn't really answer your question but I am a very indecisive person in general and I dont know that I can pick a favorite ;)

Lock bar cutout on the outside allows a more direct force conduction of the negative pressure from the lock. Inside cutout may leads to buckle. Very unlikely scenario tho

Nice, I always get confused with the different Neon variations. Thanks for the helpful video. Also, felt like the Zero I got came with a stronger detent… like a tab stronger than it should be. Wondering if yours felt the same? Thanks.

Glad you found the comparison helpful! The few Zero's I've felt have definitely had a stronger detent than my Lite, but my sample size is pretty small.

When I really squeeze on the handle while cutting, i get really gnarly lock stick. Now, it makes me confident that the harder I use it, the better it locks up, but at the same time makes me worry that it'll develop lock rock eventually. Is this normal for the neon zero in your opinion?

Great question! Mine does the exact same thing. It could, theoretically, lead to lock rock after a long time, but only if the lock bar does not naturally flex far enough to push the lock face into that deeper spot. But most likely it has enough flexion to sufficiently move across the lock face, so rather than lock rock you'd just have deeper lock engagement. And if it *didn't* naturally extend far enough, and *did* develop lock rock, you'd likely be able to resolve it by bending the lock bar slightly inward.

I own a few Shiros including an F3, Tabargan, Hati, and a Hati R which is my favorite with the MRBS. I love the lighter weight the composite show side affords over the standard F95 variants. The length is good with a 3.75” blade and its slimmer in pocket than the F3. Always have been curious about trying a neon out due to the size. Interesting about the 20+ degrees to get off the detent ball when closing and not something i prefer on folders really but not a deal breaker imo. I think I like the older Neon lite with the milling but i do like the Neon NL models with inlays also. Just depends what i can find a good deal on the secondary market i suppose. Great detailed comparisons as always!

I've had several people tell me they love the Hati R! If you were to get a Neon NL, what inlay material would you go for? It's neat they even do that wild "crazy fiber"

@@KnifeNerdery most likely micarta inlays. CF would be my first choice but im not sure if thats even offered outside of CD Neons? Always wanted an F95 with green micarta inlays so maybe that on a neon. I wish the NL had the Ti geared backspacer though its like a quintessential Shiro feature and i prefer the 5/6th grind with the small flats like on the zero or R20 over the FFG which makes the NL look dated but i do like the look and feel of inlays in general. Guess ill see what pops up on the secondary market for a deal, whatever iteration that ends up being. Mainly wanna get a neon in hand to see if its for me. Hey maybe a Hation!

I have a neon zero bought brand new and I believe I have a lock stick or lock bar problem. When I go to close it it gets stuck and I have to keep forcing it shut. Is that what that is called? Great video just wanted to confirm. Thank you

Hmm, so "lock stick" is when the lockbar feels like it's "sticking" to the blade tang when you attempt to disengage the lock. It'll feel like it's wedged in and is resisting being moved, and you'll often hear a small clicking sound as you break it free from its wedged spot. It sounds like you're experiencing something else. You're saying it get stuck partway through closing the blade? Are you talking about running into the detent ball, like I show in this video (jump to the 45:52 point to see the section on that). If that's what it is, you just need to close the blade far enough that you're past that detent ball before you let go of the pressure on the lock bar. Sorry for the delay. Yes that’s exactly what it was. I just watch that part of your video. Thank you thank you thank you. I have gained confidence again in the knife but have not used it because of this. Are you confident once this is locked, they will not Unlock without pressing the lock bar? I need to have confidence when using this content.

All three of the Shirogorov knives that I have owned, two F95R NL and a Gen 2 Quantum, as well as the two other F95 I have handled have had lockfail. Quite heartbreaking honestly.

I should note* it’s all because of lockbar tension and not lockbar geometry. If you add just enough tension you can get very good action and lockup that fails very rarely. If you add anymore tension you get lockup that could withstand a nuclear bomb, but your action is straight garbage.

😯 Yipes, wow, really?! That many have all had lock failure? Did they have a very early lockup, or was there just bad lockface geometry that made it slip either way?

You're just not spending enough. The Custom Division models are hand delivered by a Russian call girl who promptly gives you an hj. Seriously though, the focus on packaging is so absurd. Strider may be an absolute garbage company and human, but their packaging is the best in the game.

Given how much space empty knife boxes take up in my closet waiting for the off chance that I resell a knife, I think we as a community probably put too much importance on packaging. But I'm also still a mere human, and marketing, first impressions, and presentation still make a huge impact on me. So should I care? No. Do I want to care? No. Do I care? Yes. 🤣😅

But why do I see so many ex soldiers buying his stuff, now I'm more confused and gotta look into this more. I'm glad I never bought his stuff then, definitely don't support that behavior. I loved the video. But i don't get the fascination with the box (you aren't alone in that)... personally, i absolutely do not care about the boxes. I like the fact they are small, can be thrown in a closet out of the way, vs a huge dumb box like crk does (i just throw my crk boxes away)

Haha, yeah, it is definitely kind of funny the little things us folks in the EDC community tend to fixate on. I agree that I like that the boxes tend to be small, though on my NeOn R20 the box is too small to fit the COA, so it's harder for me to keep them together cleanly. But you're absolutely right that big, huge boxes are really obnoxious. I think my biggest gripe with them is that they tend to feel really flimsy and show wear from simple opening and closing very quickly. I just wish they were made out of a sturdier cardboard!

I've been wanting a shiro, but this video single handedly made me not want one. I'm not paying $1200 for a knife that has a free spinning pivot and not way to torque the opposite end. I hope they do a collab with zt or someone so they can make affordable shiro minus all the custom hardware and bad design choices. I really like the blade shape, but I also like using my knife and don't like my knives to be annoying to maintain.
