Re: messing up the pivot, I’ve owned and sold a few Shiros. Trust me, you’re better off just spending $100 to get the replacement factory hardware kit from Recon1 and replacing the pivot before selling it if you’ve messed up the pivot. You’re gonna take a bigger bath than that trying to sell it with even a slightly marked up pivot. That being said, if you’re reading this and haven’t messed up a Shiro pivot yet, follow MC’s suggestions so you avoid that altogether.

They did a run of the first production stellars in s90v too which I have and is great. And with the detent ramp, it isn’t bad once you just slightly lower your thumb to let the detent ride past the ramp

I agree. I got the Microtech Socom Bravo and loved it. I then picked up a Socom Elite, thinking it was just a liner lock version of the Bravo. It has a pretty bad double clutch. I don’t carry it. It’s a great knife. But that double clutch really ruins it for me.

@@markp4401True, and that’s exactly what I do when necessary with certain knives. While that is acceptable on a sub $300 knife, it is not on a $1,000+ knife that is supposed to be famous for extreme attention to detail. A much less expensive Reate/SBD knife has pretty much perfect action.

The ramp issue is real, but when you carry the knife for a few minutes you learn how to avoid it and it becomes a non issue ... at least it did for me. The detent on mine is STRONG. Unfailable in fact. I really love the Stellar. I think it's the Goldie Locks of the Shiro lineup, where I find the F3/F95/F111 to be a little too big and the Neon a little too small. Re: the pivot, this is a serious pet peeve of mine. MC keeps saying it's not proprietary because you can use a flat head screwdriver. Just use the right size! Well guess what? There is no normal screwdriver that fits that slot. A coin doesn't work well either. I designed and 3d printed a tool that fits. That I had to go that much trouble is annoying af. Also annoying af are loose bearings!

I own the F3, The Ursus, and the stellar. While I agreed that the cost may be pretty high, I can’t help it being my favorite Shiro of the bunch. The design is everything I love in a knife. It is a Sinkevich design, which makes sense as he’s in my top three makers of all time. And I know there are much cheaper designs with ZT and other brands like that from him, but non-get the execution quite right for his design language like Shir does

The whole almost double clutch thing is about the same as the Quantum. I would say the quantum is a little bit worse, as you have to get your thumb down even lower on the lock bar to get past the detent ball ramp than on the Stellar. I almost wonder if they do that to give you the option of letting the blade fall on your finger or let it stop and close in a more "controlled" way. Either way it is annoying, but I just end up disengaging the lock a little lower than I would like to get past the ramp. The blade on the Stellar is light enough it's not going to cut you.
@michaelmcgill8397
@michaelmcgill8397 Ай бұрын
Took the words out of my mouth. The ramp on my stellar is a little easier to get past, I use it now. I barely disengage the blade and let it fall and rest on the ramp, then with a slight hand movment it closes perfectly. The transition from ramp to closing Is about perfect.

It’s a good looking knife and I like a simple style/ aesthetic…but $1100…It’s just too rich for my blood. I ask this out of ignorance…what is the drop off in quality between this and let’s say…the tactile Archer or the Chris reeves umnumzaan? Because I LOVE those knives and they cost half as much or less. I do think Shiros look great though overall. I know everyone runs into this “price point” issue at some point and it varies based on income and taste. Thank you for sharing. I think for some of us you’re living out our wildest knife dreams. 😂
@kims2r
@kims2r Ай бұрын
I don’t own shiro’s but I can not believe the umnumzaan would be lesser quality. It might be down to finishing and more complex patterns in the titanium. I’ve absolutely abused a zaan and there’s simply no give… I think I’d prefer a MEFP Zaan over this:)
@markp4401

I own both CRKs and Shiros. I like them both. Quality is comparable. I would argue the Shiro premium is partly for the finely tuned action and the machining details MC referenced. Shiros are known for their excellent opening and closing action. The CRKs have a “hydraulic” action that is appealing to many but I doubt it’s as difficult to create as the unfailable opening and gravity drop “hydraulic” closing action you usually see on Shiros. I agree with the points MC made about pricing though. He thinks the price should be considerably less than $1K but I don’t ever remember seeing a full size full ti Shiro for less than $1K. I’ve been following the market for about 6 years.

@@markp4401this comment is very helpful. At one point I thought $500 knives were ridiculous and now I own a hinderer and eyeing to add a CRK to the collection soon. At some point when my collecting process slows down I can think of it as “investing”. Shifting funds to fewer knives but higher costs. My mindset is still expanding I think. I’ll look back to these types of comments and smh probably. Thanks for your input! 👍🏻

For the money, Shiros should be perfect. Double clutching on a knife with a detent ramp is a no-no for that kind of money. Most of my high-quality Chinese knives that have detent ramps that cost so much less get that right. Just saying.

Nested steel lockbar in titanium/carbon fiber isn't new there are knives under $200 that do it the divo mash 2.5 did it.but in an $1150 knife a steel lockbar is unacceptable spend the time and do it in titanium with a steel insert of your gonna charge that kind of money your basically paying $1150 for a steel liner lock you might as well save $1100 and buy a sencut
