One of the great chess rivalries of the 1990s was Vladimir Kramnik vs. Alexei Shirov. Today Kramnik's achievements are legendary, most notably defeating Garry Kasparov and becoming World Chess Champion in 2000. Many may not realize how dominant Shirov was in this period, being ranked third in the world. Shirov and Kramnik had many great battles, including a match won in 1998 by Shirov in which the winner was supposed to play a World Championship match against Garry Kasparov. That match fell through, but the games (including this incredible swindle) remain.
Lessons:
* Ignore the engine evaluation, pose problems for your opponent. (...Re4!!)
* It's not over till it's over.
* Don't get complacent (...Qd7?); each move changes calculations.

An incredible and awe-inspiring game. Daniel Naroditsky annotated it with equal bombast and insight in his weekly column on Chess.com, and I can't wait to read those notes again.

Alexei "Fire on the Board" Shirov, that name should tell how great he is.

great game, thank you very much for this video, but I think you should also explain why not 31. Rh3 trapping the queen instead of knight

Seems like Sam has a point... Stockfish 14 (according to my particular analysis) seems to think that ...Rg6 can free the queen, but white is still better.

Kramnik just a bullshit, how the hell he win kasparov in 2000? After seeing their games, when kasparov agree to draw with white after several moves, I believe in Fischer all their matches are fixed lol
