What's up, folks! I'm back with another a-ha reaction, and this time we listen to another song from their 2000 album Minor Earth Major Sky, "Little Black Heart." As you'll see, this tune makes a big impression on me and is an instant-favorite, so join me as we give it a proper listen. Cheers!

«minor earth | major sky» is one of the best albums ever made, extremely underrated. No, it’s not full of hit singles, but every song is great, every song has an identity, and the sound they produced for this album was so fresh and unique. Perfect comeback, completely free from any «old a-ha» nostalgia, and I love how they pulled this off.

Another song I love…and even better when sung live in concert in the early 2000s! Nobody conveys emotions like Morten’s voice can….

I had almost forgotten about this one! Brilliant! Sad but uplifting at the same time, with that smooth, warm voice and the fresh, a bit cold and metallic sound, that you can hear on this album... 😊🎶❤🇳🇴

ok now we are moving into the A-Ha years I love.... 2000 to current. I feel the songwriting an arrangements just became a more intricate, sophisticated and they just hit me in the feels. This song is amazing... the chord changes are beautiful and so is his voice. I love the mix of electronics and acoustic guitar here too. I do like some of the past A-Ha material you've been listening to, but for me, this is where there career got more interesting to me.

I love this one. Little black heart was already demoed during a time when AHA were on the verge of splintering for good. The lyrics were by Pal Waaktaar and Magne Furuholmen and seem to offer an insight into the lyricists mind during this time. The narrator of the song is seemingly going through a period of great sadness and self-doubt. Take care and i’ll catch you on the next one. Stay safe Matt. 😘❤️🇳🇴❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

There's a beautiful rendition of Little Black Heart on the a-ha Live In Valhall DVD, which was part of their Minor Earth Tour. It's a fabulous concert if you ever get to cover their live performances...

I shall be lobbying for this once Matt has made his way through the rest of the released music. I have no idea where to start though? Which the DVDs? Did anyone else watch the live stream from the late 90s on dial up? I remember the adverts, they were waaaaay ahead of their time in terms of tech sometimes. It was sponsored by Mercedes?

Fantastic concert - and when you also know that Morten was ill, and when normal people would have crawled into the couch to take care of themselves, he went to a concert to sing for thousands of people, then it's even more impressive. You can hear that he is a bit nasal on some of the songs.

@@ahkkariq7406 Yes truly that man gives his all to fans. Did it with this last concert when he had COVID. I don’t know how many saw the video of him sincerely apologizing when they had to cancel. He was so sweet, sincere, and charming despite feeling pretty terrible, I imagine.. Oh my God, just killed me. 😔Dude, it’s okay to go take care of yourself! Then fans upset and angry with them for canceling. Wow, they aren’t robots. Then when him and Pål came back. You could tell they still felt awful, but they were serious troopers. I am way too empathetic, it seems though. I am blown away with how well Morten performed in that Valhall concert, but I could so feel he wasn’t well. It’s hard to watch. Just like the videos I saw of the last concert when they came back. I just want to be like “Oh gosh, please don’t do this! Go take care of yourselves! You healthy and taking care is way more important than seeing you in concert! I have so many ways to listen to your music. If I never see you in concert, so be it. The fact that I have been blessed with your music in recordings and videos is such a huge gift as it is!”. They do seem stubborn though, so they obviously do it anyway 😂 These three do so much for us fans. We real fans know what treasures they truly are.❤

Matt here are the lyrics to little black heart so you can sing along on your next listen …….. Little black heart I never saw sunlight burn as bright / I never felt darkness / The way i feel it tonight. You say it’s getting better / You say it’s alright / But i never felt darkness / Like i feel it tonight / Little black heart. Raindrops on my window / I can’t tell them apart / Like a few things forgotten / In my little black heart You say it’s getting better / We just never got it right / But i never felt darkness / The way i feel it tonight / Little black heart some day we will shine / Like the moon in the morning / Like the sun when it’s dawning / Yes the sun when it’s dawning / Sun Raindrops on my window / I can’t tell them apart / Like a few things forgotten / And a few things ignored You say it’s getting better / You say it’s alright / But i never felt darkness / The way i feel it tonight / Littleblack heart / My little black heart. Take care Matt, catch you on the next one. 😘❤️🇳🇴❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

It's strange for a band labelled as a 'one hit wonder', when you talk to their fans they nearly always love the tracks that were non singles, or B sides. I personally love TIME AND AGAIN from their next album, Lifelines. But likewise you hear people pick favourites such as Living A Boy's Adventure Tale or Scoundrel Days or other gems that never released as singles.

Wonderful songs. I will add The Swing of Things, Rolling Thunder, East of the Sun, Out of Blue comes Green...there are so many hidden gems on the albums that easily could have been released as single. Time and Again is so beautiful I can't find words to describe it.

Oh my gosh, yes, Time and Again is so beautiful. ❤ I think one that surprised me was the Turn the Lights Down Demo. It’s funny for the one as the actual track doesn’t do much for me, but I am in love with the Demo version. Just love how they sing it. Always surprises for me with these guys and I love that. ❤

Allow me a side thought here. I don't know if you have access to the MTV Unplugged a-ha performance from 2017, but the more I listen to "True North" the more I realize that you might want to listen to the Unplugged performance in between "Cast in Steel" and "True North." I think Unplugged informed some of their composition choices for "True North." As far as "Little Black Heart," so freaking good. I actually have never owned a physical copy of "Minor Earth Major Sky." I've never found a physical copy in the wild. I might have to go to eBay the way a very wonderful person did to find me a physical copy of "Analogue" a couple of years back. I actually downloaded "Minor Earth Major Sky" from Napster before it was controversial. It's a little convoluted of a tale, but I downloaded it from the same woman who had dubbed me a copy of "Hunting High and Low" a couple of years before I finally found a physical copy of that one. The funny thing is I didn't know I was downloading from her until she started a chat. I don't know if you plan to get into Morrissey and Johnny Marr post The Smiths, but there is a Johnny Marr solo track called "Hi Hello" that uses to great effect a very similar melody to the opening and closing melody of "Little Black Heart."

Heck yeah, thanks for this, Floyd. And I will see if I have access to that Unplugged album, and cheers for explaining how it may have informed choices on their most recent album. And I'm not sure if I have access to post-Smiths Morrissey or Marr material, but I'm certainly intrigued!

@@mattsnider2667 I do have almost everything from Morrissey up to 2017 including all the albums, the singles boxes and b-sides compilations. In case you wanna start. But maybe it's better to wait until The Smiths are done? It's not like we're running out of time, or are we?
