What's shaking, people! I'm back with another Smiths reaction from their sophomore album Meat Is Murder (1985), and this time we listen to "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore," a lovely tune that grows from dreamy and floaty in the early stages to marching and powerful by the end, all with some great vocals by Morrissey---and that's only the half of it! So join me for a top-shelf Smiths track that really takes me on a ride. Cheers!

I guess this song gave a hint of the epic songs to come on the next two albums. The leap from the first burst of songs in the previous 18 months to this is beatle-esque in its rapid development. An underrated classic. Looking forward to the utter playfulness of Nowhere Fast. Peace and cats.

Indeed, I'm sad I've gone through all the Smiths albums now, though I did just start the solo Morrissey journey (first reaction in that playlist went up yesterday). Cheers for the comment!

Wonderful. Yes, the fade out and back in is on the record. it's an interesting track musically and lyrically. Kind of a waltz. Morrissey has said it was a response to music journalists mocking him writing about unhappiness and trying to expose it as an act, rather than based in his own truth. It's rumoured it is based on a conversation with a journalist he was secretly seeing around the time. The second verse - "It was dark as I drove the point home and on cold leather seats, well it finally struck me, I might just die with a smile on my face after all" - could be he's happy to have made the other person think about what they have said, or it could be about sex. Either way, it's another reason why this is my favourite Smith's album. It was the only track released as a single (at the time) and wasn't a hit.

I see, really interesting! And my first thought on seeing that line written properly is that it could be about a conversation had during or after sex (as if he was still arguing the point even as they got intimate), so maybe both?

Such a great album. For me the best they made. Queen is dead may have better singles, but meat is murder is the most consistent imo

Seeing as you like The Smiths and you like Pet Shop Boys, i will look for an album by Electronic (Johnny Marr & Neil Tennant (among others).

@@mattsnider2667 Electronic put out albums. Clarke & Ware put out limited edition box sets (1000 units). I sent an email with links to some samples, but finding full tracks or albums is going to be tricky,

@@handsolo1209 Understood. Well hell yes, I would like to listen to Electronic. Also I know there's so many deep-dives I'm lagging on (I've been meaning to start Kajagoogoo for weeks, as just one example), but I am trying to get even more plates spinning.
