What's up, people! I'm back with another U2 reaction from their 1983 album War, and this time we listen to the amazing "New Year's Day," a song I must have heard at least in part before, as the main soaring guitar riff came back to me. But seriously, the guitar, the sequencing, they lyrics, and Bono's incredible vocals---this is just a masterpiece. So join me as we give it a proper listen. Cheers!

What to say …. I first saw U2 live in February of 82 on the October tour at a small venue in Denver , it was a great show topped off with hanging out with the band in the parking lot after the gig with Larry sitting on the hood of my car. I remember seeing the video for NYD and being amazed by how cool they looked and sounded and was really excited that they were touring and would be playing at Red Rocks with The Divinyls , who were my new favorite band out of Australia. Not only was this to be my first Red Rocks show but it was announced that it was going to be filmed!!! The day of the concert June 5th 1983 was super cold , rainy and foggy we were sitting by the radio wondering if the show would be canceled. It was announced that the concert would happen but it would be without the opening acts. At first I was disappointed and didn’t want to go but they told us that all three bands would be performing the next night up in Boulder and you could use your tickets for both nights. So with the thought of seeing U2 two days in a row I was all in Besides the weather felt right especially after seeing the video. A cold rainy foggy day meant I could wear a bowler hat and a trench coat like they did in the video. Little did I know that I was about to experience my first Red Rocks show where the weather is usually very much a part of the experience and I’m captured on film and was seen on MTV every day for quite awhile

Edge is often called the scientist of the band ... by the other band members and it is dead on. This song when it is hitting on all levels live is amazing.. it is so great and sounds even better live like many U2 songs.

Glad you came back to break down the lyrics. This was the first U2 song I ever heard and I was hooked from that point on. Also, don’t get discouraged by people saying the like their older stuff and not their newer stuff. The older stuff is more raw but they still have tons and tons of great song ps ahead from their later albums. Some people just don’t like change.

Love this song, that piano line is iconic and unique in a new wave/rock track. I didn't know the meaning until reading the comments (although I have got a great book about their songs upto 'Pop' i haven't read it thoroughly). The video of them in the snow on horseback makes more sense now it's been explained here.

This has always been a personal favourite. The music just perfectly evokes visions of a quiet, empty landscape on a snowy New Years day.

I remember how way-back-when all my friends who were still sitting on the fence after "Boy" and "October" finally went crazy for U2 when they heard this song. It's simply a classic. Keep up the great work!

This song to me is where U2 takes off. Sunday Bloody Sunday gets most of the attention from this album but there are three others on there, on of them being NYD, that I like better. Maybe because after being a fan for so long I’m a little burnt out on SBS. As for the meaning of the song. It did start as a love song, but in true U2 fashion, it morphed into a song about the leader of the Polish solidarity movement in then Communist Poland, where martial law had been enacted. Lots of U2 songs moving forward with dual meanings. This song is really special though and always cool seeing it live when Edge has to play piano and guitar 😊

You're right, U2 is monumental. The Edge has to be the most underrated guitarist ever. His playing is majestic. This is one of my very favorite U2 songs, it's amazing. I can't say it enough, U2 are a very important band.

U2 at their best. Recalls and fulfills all the promise of Boy and October with a great tune, strong Edge guitar work, layered passionate Bono vocals and a political message (polish martial law ending new years day walesa's internment) without being preachy and beating you over the head with a history book. Still works as a timeless song today. And though a hit that set them as a global supergroup, it was and isnt overplayed.

Classic! But as a guitarist I must say Edge's playing isn't actually crazy. It's just tasteful and cohesive with the group. I recommend the doc It Might Get Loud. It features the Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White showing their guitars and telling their histories and influences. They play and sing together (Page doesn't sing)

I don't know if anyone's ever mentioned and maybe it's only me, but sadly I can't understand most of what you are saying during the song because your voice is too low/music too loud - I can hear you talking, can't make out what you are saying 😕

Sorry, sometimes it's better than others, as it depends on what the song is doing at the moment. But apologies, I will continue to try to find the right moments to say something (or just wait until after). Cheers.
