Today we toured the beautiful UNESCO world heritage city of VIGAN. The old Spanish-style buildings and plazas were stunning. We visited the top attractions in Vigan before hopping in the car and heading to the nearby beach.

this is actually an excuse that filipinos tell themselves about the failure of their successive governments to reconstruct intramuros. go to japan, taiwan, korea, these countries have also been ravaged and ruined by wars but their societies have decided to reconstruct, rebuild and value their historic architecture, whether for legacy, history, or tourism's sake. everything can be rebuilt. building codes can be stricter such that architectural heritage is maintained, and preserved.

During WWII, the Americans wanted to bomb Vigan because of the presence of the Japanese. But the bombing was aborted and redirected to another place because Fr. Joseph Klecamf, SVD, then parish priest of Vigan, told the Americans that there were no more Japanese soldiers in the area. King added that Klecamf was requested by two Japanese officers, Majors Fujiro Takahashi and Sakae Narioka, not to allow Vigan to be bombed as the families of Japanese soldiers were living there. Takahashi was married to Filipina Adela Tolentino, also from Vigan. The Americans heeded the call of Fr. Klecamf not to bomb Vigan, thus the town was saved from total destruction.

The town's architecture (as well as horse drawn carriages) reminds me of Havanna, which was also a Spanish colony. Although it's more dilapidated in Havanna for obvious reasons. Then the 'mass' amount of people going to church/cathedral reminded me of Mexico (also a former Spanish colony) where the churches/cathedrals were also packed with people. I've never been to Spain, but from what I know the churches/cathedrals don't get as 'packed' and so it's a little 'strange' that their people from the former colonies attend/visit churches/cathedrals relatively more. I wonder why.

Don’t miss to try the Ilocos empanada, bagnet, pakbet and longganisa (google it first so you’ll have an idea what they are made from). Drive all the way to Pagudpud Beach where you’ll see one of the best beaches up north of the Philippines. Enjoy the adventure.
