Which is better, the UHQR pressing of Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced" or a $15 copy from Walmart? Let's find out.

There is nothing subjective about the quality at QRP, They are constantly excellent and unwavering in quality. it's reasonable for them to make that claim. RTI (who press Tone Poet) are also right up there. The Walmart version is also pressed at QRP, is all analog from the original masters and cut at Sterling Sound, an absolutely high end studio. The $15 version is without question, an audiophile record and an astonishing bargain at the price, I have a bunch of Analog Productions records, but didn't even consider the UHQR because I have the Marino/QRP version and it's great. The thing about gauging QC by internet comments is, you only hear about the copies that have problems and don't get a proportional representation of peoples satisfaction generally. I have bought a decent amount of RTI, Pallas, QRP as well as the others Optimal, GZ, Record Industries etc... QRP are not perfect but they are consistently the best sounding and cleanest.

Compression is used to make recordings louder, not softer. So in all likelihood the UHQR-version is less compressed. Otherwise your observations are valid, and much appreciated!

I looked up the cartridge used , thinking that such an unusually thick record might need the cartridge tracking angle adjusted, and lack of doing so might affect the comparisons, making the non standard thickness, and mcc more expensive record, sound puzzlingly less vibrant . But in checking, the cartridge used has an elliptical tip, which is not supposed to be as angle sensitive as modern tip designs that seek to mimic the mastering cutter heads, and track the grooves with a very different contact area. If a 200 gram record, about as thick as they come today, is thick enough to effect tracking with his set up, I don't know. With a system that uses a more modern tip design, such as many people use, the stylus rake angle would have to be adjusted to hit the "sweet spot" , and that is why some record players have provisions for on the fly adjustments, to make it easier to hear the correct adjustment as the record plays. Other players use shims to adjust arm height, because it can be critical, depending on your listening goals. I don't adjust my cartridge for every record, I usually just keep it in the general ballpark of correctness, just like most record players are set up. But on an extra thick album , especially one so costly, I would certainly adjust my cartridge until it sounds like it is exactly in the correct contact angle with the groove. an incorrect contact angle sounds fine. but when you hit the correct angle, the music comes alive, as if someone said to snap it up and get with it, , and only then do you realize the incorrect angle sounded kind of dull in comparison.
@6AM_YT
@6AM_YT Жыл бұрын
I'd have to watch the video to see what cartridge I was even using when I made this video. If I have to adjust my VTA for a record, then I guess I'd rather not listen to that record. Most people aren't going to do that, so even if adjusting the VTA makes it sound better then I feel the review is still valid.

I have the Moreno version and am waiting for delivery on the UHQR version which I think is overpriced by at least $20.00. I'm happy that the mass produced versions are getting better quality pressings. I think that is a result of the audiophile popularity trickling down to the regular releases. Definitely a positive trend. OK. Finally received it 5/31. Music Direct should change their name. Maybe my system can take advantage of these premium releases better but to my ears the more expensive version is many times better. The vinyl is so quiet that you can crank up the volume and get Jimied without any shill highs and the only distortion by design by Jimi. First time I wanted to go to the corner and score a doober and listen again. Still feel it was over priced but what isn't today

@@6AM_YT With a thicker record, a modern aggressive diamond shape will need to be adjusted to the proper rake angle, because a regular record will hit the angles cut in the diamond differently, and will not mimic the cutter head as the modern shapes intend, defeating the purpose of the diamond's shape. This is less critical on conical diamond shapes , or elliptical , which are really just conical diamond tips with the sides trimmed off.

This isn't a super quality recording to begin with, originally made in 1966 when stereo was just becoming common. I have an original Iron Butterfly and I have the MoFi version, its similar to what you are saying here. The original is louder and more dynamic but also harsher and I guess, raw sounding. The MoFi rounds off the harshness and expands the image but then also loses some of the dynamics and powerfulness. I'm not sure which one I like better. I also have the cheaper Hendrix you reviewed and while I don't have the UHQR, I think the sound and the pressing are pretty good. The album overall is a little thin and cold sounding but, again, its probably due to the original not being the best to begin with.

Lets get some facts straight, the album was originally recorded and released in mono, stereo back in 1967 was new and not well supported by recording studios and the listeners it was a gimmick, mono was king. This is actually known as the US version of the album significantly different to the one originally released 6 months earlier in the UK !! Any Hendrix guru probably owns the bootlegs with all the original master recordings, reworking of each track and the rehearsals, the over dubs and various attempts to remix it into stereo the releases of which although "bootlegs" have now been officially authorised by the Hendrix estate. I would guess they sound similar as would the original release since they probably and almost likely all come from the same source analogue master tape. Jimi was probably the most recorded artist of all time, every time he played his guitar it was recorded, in studios live and even in various flats and apartments !! There is a huge library of his life's work unlike anything available for any other artist EVER
