@Bandomeme9 ай бұрын
It’s not “common sense”. Common sense is sound and prudent judgment based on experience and understanding of the facts. It’s also influenced by culture. Many people know nothing at all about horses, bridles, reins, or any tack, except what they might have seen on TV or on the movies. You’re not the first to say it’s “like grabbing the steering wheel when someone is driving a car”, but in fact it’s nothing of the sort and that’s a very bad analogy. Anyone knows not to interfere with the wheel WHEN THE CAR IS MOVING, but why should they not put their hands on the wheel when the car is stationary? Apart from tossing their heads around, the horses are usually stationary too.
@Kimberly-dn4mc9 ай бұрын
@@Bandomeme My comment is my own personal opinion, just as you have yours, and I respect that they are your own thoughts, your opinion. If one doesn't understand something or how it works, they should stay clear of it, and certainly not grab at it. The reins on a horse aren't there just to look good, they are the means to direct these horses, same as having a dog on a leash. Would you just run up and grab the dogs leash? That's a good way to end up with a nasty bite! The horses don't stay "stationary" when someone pulls or yanks on their reins. They at times react even before the guard does. It's not factual that "anyone" knows not to grab the steering wheel when someone else is driving, as is evident by the fact that there have been many accidents over the years because of someone doing just that. What it all boils down to is, don't touch the reins ever, for any reason! It's so simple really.
@Bandomeme9 ай бұрын
@@Kimberly-dn4mc you’re missing the point completely. It’s only simple if you are familiar with horses and know what bits of tack do what, as you obviously are and do. Many, if not most, people aren’t. Nor do they equate the suicidal grabbing of the steering wheel of a car in motion with posing for a photo while holding of a bit of leather dangling from a stationary horse. Never mind. It’s not that important in the general scheme of things and I’m very sure the MOD and VisitBritain can manage their affairs very well without our comments from the sidelines.

Actually they often do try to thank the guard but s/he is seated high up and frequently looking the other way, so the opportunity is lost. I’m perfectly sure the tourists here do NOT think the guards are paid actors just because they’re allowed to take photos next to them and pat the horse. They’re allowed to take photos next to policemen in uniform too, and next to Pearly Kings and Queens, none of whom are paid actors either. The difference lies in the fact that sightseers cannot talk to the guards or establish any kind of relationship with them. In fact, not talking to the guards is a form of respect as it’s well known they are on duty and shouldn’t be distracted.

@tricia4900 Actually, it's not obvious at all. Not to someone without horse knowledge. The guy made a mistake, it's really that simple. He's learned his lesson and probably won't do it again. There should be a paint line around the guard's area that says do not cross. The line itself is a universal sign that this area is marked off for a reason. There should also be signs saying don't approach the horses. If everyone else isn't getting close then people that don't speak the language usually aren't going to do it either. You really don't need to be right up next to them to get a picture with them anyway.

@@thelnepoet1 Good ideas all. It is really not rocket science. A red paint line, maybe police posted for a period of time to get people used to the idea of staying out of the zone. Eventually it will become common knowledge and obvious to stay back.
@thelnepoet19 ай бұрын
@cynn3367 Exactly. Eventually, it'd be less stressful on the guards and the horses and way safer for the tourists. Horses, even well trained/mannered ones, can have off days just like us.

I would love to get the guards a T-shirt that says "Here, let me grab the steering wheel out of your hands!"

The more and more I watch these videos, the more I realise this is likely the last times this duty will be performed. If in 3 years this is still going as is, if at all. I will be very surprised.

Why on earth are these people allowed to even touch the Kings horses? There should be a barrier 2 meters away.

Glad to see that there's now some tall police officers on duty who can handle the situation properly and look like they know what they're doing. Nice quite word in the mans ear. Job well done.

Tourists should not be allowed anywhere near the Queen's Guards & horses!! They should be required to stay behind a fence, where the guards & their horses are not put in danger!! This makes me sick!! The public cannot be trusted to behave appropriately, apparently, under any circumstance!! Pathetic!! Shameful!! 🇺🇸

My boy once bit a child in the face after the kid repeatedly teased him, the mom never even tried to stop him. I wasn’t there, but was told about it afterwards. People can be so dumb!

Very patient Royal Guards, lovely horses. Tourists are annoying. The horse must be exhausted after being touched, tugged at, etc. Plus all the smells and noise.

That was a really aggressive pull on the reins by the tourist, who didn’t show any remorse or embarrassment when chided by the police officer. (How the horses and guards must dread their “shift” on this particular duty.)

It’s unfair and extremely unrealistic to expect every foreign tourist to be able to read English. How many English people go abroad able to read in the language of the country they visit?
@A-Ned-D-689 ай бұрын
@@shirleyanneyoung955 sorry you're misunderstanding what I said...... I was being sarcastic (my English sense of humour) meaning ppl choose not to read the signs put up!!! It should be common courtesy for tourist NOT to go up to a soldier on hourseback that is on duty doing his job & pull on the horses reins. I would never ever do the that in this country or any other!!!!!! Would they like it if they were at work & the soldier went & started tugging on their clothes wanting a pic, no they wouldn't!!

That’s why I say for the military to put up an international sign that everyone will understand, a horses head with a hand on the reins with a red line through it, how simple!

A) The police officer spoke to the person in English and the Person replied in English. B) You are in a English speaking country... it's no one's but the visitors responsibility to understand the local culture, language and literature. C) Grabbing the reigns of a horse is no different from grabbing a steering wheel of a car that is moving... it's obviously stupid. D) The guard is not there for Tourists and is not there to accommodate them. E) That is why your "Request" will be ignored.

@@babalonkie The man's cohorts could have told him not to grab the reins. I think many do it to see if they can get away with it.

Why... why...WHY??? would anyone yank a horse's head toward their face? That animal weighs about 2,000 pounds and has teeth... BIG TEETH! (They're called "chompers" for a reason.) I know horses don't (usually) bite, but they COULD if they wanted to! And the person sitting on the horse rules over those on the ground -- the rider makes the rules. Never screw around with someone else's horse or the doctor will be asking why you have hoofprints on your face.
