I remember this group. Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band formed in 1967. Their 2 biggest hits were "Venus" & "Send Me A Postcard". They had some other songs such as "Long & Lonesome Road", "Mighty Joe", "Never Marry A Railroad Man" etc. The lead singer had a very powerful voice. Another famous Dutch group from that era was Golden Earring.

Criminally underrated group that had not only a tremendous vocalist in the beautiful Mariska Veres but had a great band that really knew how to play their respective musical instruments. Below is a partial list of some of their more varied and listenable songs many of which highlight both the Vocalist and the rest of the band --- there are many more great tunes besides these (in addition to what is by far their most recognizable and popular tune _Venus.)_ The ones in bold are great examples of Mariska's strong but beautiful vocals (# 13 is a particular standout for both the vocalist and the band): (01) Pickin' Tomatoes (02) Send me a Postcard (03) *Never Release the One You Love* (04) Never Marry a Railroad Man (05) *Waterloo* (06) Scorpio's Dance (an instrumental) (07) *Love Machine* (08) My Life (09) I'll Follow the Sun (10) *The Bird of Paradise* (11) Velvet Heaven (12) The Queen (13) *Daemon Lover*

The singer was: "Maria Elizabeth Ender, better known as Mariska Veres (pronunciationi) (1 October 1947 - 2 December 2006), was a Dutch singer who was best known as the lead singer of the rock group Shocking Blue. Described as being similar to a young Cher, she was known for her sultry voice, eccentric performances, and her striking appearance which featured kohl-rimmed eyes, high cheekbones, and long jet black hair, which was actually a wig." - Wikipedia Unfortunately, Veres died of gallbladder cancer on 2 December 2006 at age 59, just three weeks after the disease had been detected 😶☹😢🌹RIP Additional notes about the band: "Drummer Cor van der Beek died on 2 April 1998 at age 49 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. [As, reported previous] Mariska Veres died of gallbladder cancer on 2 December 2006 at age 59 in The Hague, Netherlands. Bassist Klaasje van der Wal died on 12 February 2018 at age 69." - Wikipedia Seems like this band was doomed, and all members were "disbanded" ☹😶

Hey, Millie! I'm 74, and I remember well how popular this song was when it was first released. I don't know if this is true, but at the time, it was reported that the group did not speak English and were singing phonetically. They had no idea what they were saying. Have enjoyed your reactions for a while and hope you continue for a long time!

Robbie, the band's lead guitarist and the songwriter of Venus, knew English well enough to write all their songs in English. It was Mariska, the female singer, who didn't speak English.

hello millie, great reaction (as always). since you mentioned to to love music from the sixties, I have to recommend a hidden gem from that time to you. german band (some called them the german deep purple) fronted by a killer female singer (who reminds on a female ozzy), of course with a fantastic keyboarder. the band was called "frumpy" and the song "how the gypsy was born live 1971") maybe it´s to long for reacting, but then for your private fun. bye.

Hi Millie! Nice to see young beautiful girls liking the music I grew up with! I was a young teenager when this song became a hit here in Sweden and on several charts around the world. You've probably heard it before on TV, Gillette had that song in their commercial for the "Venus" Razor for Women. Bananarama's version is also good, feel free to do a reaction on that too, when you get a chance. Good work. Greetings from Sweden 😉

Shocking Blue was founded in 1967 by the Motions guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen. Other members of the group at this time were Fred de Wilde, Klaasje van der Wal (1 February 1949 - 12 February 2018)[3] and Cor van der Beek (9 June 1949 - 2 April 1998). They had a minor hit in 1968 with "Lucy Brown is Back in Town". When De Wilde was the band's lead singer, the band originally had a sound that was described as cross between the Beatles and Brothers Four.

The band at one time was well known. As they broke up in 1974 it was quickly forgotten. They were remembered for their cover of "Venus" by Bananarama. But they were also covered by other greats. "Love Buzz" appeared on Nirvana's debut album. The band The Prodigy also recorded the same song but under their own title "Phoenix." Also worth noting is a cover of "Long and Lonesome Road" by Jess and the Ancient Once. Although I like the original better. Shocking Blue, as well as the currently existing Jess and the Ancient Once were often musically inspired by the American band Jefferson Airplane. It is also worth reaching for. For example, the song "Somebody to Love" from the Woodstock festival or 2 songs White Rabbit / Somebody To Love from TV appearance.

If you listen closely and watch her lips, you'll see that in the first line, she sings "The Godness on a mountain top" instead of "The Goddess ...". Per the KZfaq channel, Professor of Rock, Mariska Veres did not speak English and so someone wrote out the words for her and she was to sing them phonetically. However, whoever wrote the words made a typo and wrote "Godness", and she faithfully sang that.

since you seem to like rather obscure bands try "The System/Babylon" from the band Aphrodite's Child. its leads off the 1970 double album "666." a concept album based loosely on the book "revelations" from the bible. also, on that album is the song - "The Battle of the Locusts/Do It"!" and it ends with the gem "Break.' the songs with a "/" are two songs that need to be played together as one continuous song. its a very underrated album no one ever reacts to. BE THE FIRST! i think you'll love these songs as i do!
