Hi, I just ordered my first Brutfuner colored pencils on Amazon and found this video. I didn`t know that there are oil-based and wax-based penciles. Thank you for your detailed information. I think Chinese manufacturers use the word "OILY", not to tell the material they use, but to differentiate it from Watercolor pencils. I am from Japan and we do so (if pencils are not water-soluble, we use 油性 which actually means oily, and 水性 for water-soluble.

It's not the tool that matters, it's the skill, eye and imagination of the artist, as a sketch, cartoon artist I have to adapt alot during my colorings or sketches, an artist can make beautiful art with cheap supplies, even the cheapest of the cheap

Well yes, an artist can make amazing art with anything, but if is not lightfast it will fade and die overtime, what’s the point of making a masterpiece that will fade in 10 years and in 50 will be unrecognizable? Cheap supplies have their place, to learn when you can’t afford anything else, or if you’re not serious about art, if you’re coloring to relax and you don’t mind about the piece itself, but the process, but price does makes a difference and if lightfastness matters to you the high price is nothing.

When you are using these pencils in coloring books, tools do matter. Some pencils fight you while others go on easy. You don’t use pencils that fight you all the time. Most people who use coloring books do so for stress relief not artistic merit.

I wish the companies would start labelling what percentage is Wax or Oil. ie This is a "70% Oil pencil"

What the man means and I’m thinking a language barrier may be impacting the clarity, I’m thinking is that all colored pencils are in fact formulated with both Wax AND Oil in their base, and the “classification “ refers to which of the two binders is most prominent in That Specific Pencils Formulation. . . I really don’t think he was saying they are lying about their product descriptions. I would hate to think that’s the case for any manufacturer truthfully but I am very aware of “Private Labeling” among companies. I’m SO glad that you touched onto the fact that companies aren’t necessarily intentionally trying to deceive us. I really just hate to believe that.

You’re right that many pencils are, in fact, a combination of both. Even Polychromos have wax in them, despite being “oil-based” pencils.
@Littlewings1211
@Littlewings1211 3 жыл бұрын
I think in this case, mislabelling or deliberately deceiving their customers would be pretty pointless because it comes down to personal preference. Personally I prefer a more heavily wax-based pencil, I love how I can blend the colours and the finish I can get with them. I really like the more oil-based pencils too but my go-to pencils are more like Prismas than Polychromos. I know a lot of people prefer a more heavily oil-based because of how they use them and I have a mix of both in my collection so I don't think that saying it is one or the other deliberately to sell more of them would be very effective. I do think that you're right though, I think that was a 'lost in translation' kind of error and I think that the oil-based or wax-based is still an important question to ask before buying any new pencils but this is also why reviews, particularly video format reviews are invaluable because not only can you see how the pencils act under certain parameters but if it is from a reviewer you have watched for a while and know has a similar preference to yourself you know how to gauge their responses to the pencils being tested. You can always go through their older videos and find a review they have done on your favourite set of pencils and see how closely your preferences lie with theirs and more than anything that will give you the best idea (short of borrowing a set to play with) of how you will find those pencils.

This is why I stopped buying budget pencils. I was always searching for the most budget friendly pencil that compared to polychromos or prismas. If I had just bought the better pencils in the beginning I would have saved lots of money.

Interesting! This is helpful but maybe not the complete story. There's white labeling, where companies stick their own labels on the same base product, but there's also using the same manufacturer, which isn't necessarily getting the same product. Example, I know someone who worked in a cookie factory and they would run the name brand cookies and then switch over to the store brand. But they didn't just switch labels, they changed a few ingredients. Listening to a few episodes of the channel that had some input into the newer Star Joy, and the Art Gea to Guide who has been in talks with the guy who owns Castle Art, they seem to be more like the cookie factory - tweaking the product to their own specs but from same manufacturer. And it may have been Brutfuner, but someone got word that they have some vegetable oil in the formula. But you've proven that not all of the so-called "oil-based" pencils do. From what you described, you might input Faber Castell Goldfaber (I'm new here, sorry if you have already discussed them!) They're the was-based step down from Polychromos so they're the same colors, great pigmentation, hold their points, but blend a little more like wax.
@drakynoch

The Art Gear Guide. He mentioned that Brutfuner "white labeled" their pencils but couldn't confirm because their website had broken links and the seller never contacted him back. Whereas, he met with the co-owner of Castle Arts and spoke to them directly. No mention of white labeling.

People always ask the wrong question because they have created a connection in their heads between how a pencil feels and if it is more oil or wax based. I believe people should be asking how the pencil works and feels, because that's what they actually want to know. I have different sets, and I love that they are all so different. This helps in creating different looks, use certain sets for certain things etc.... So I believe that people asking these questions just want to know if they will work the same as the other sets they have, but that doesn't depend on the pencil alone, there is also paper etc... So maybe reviewers can indicate to which other pencils they are close to. In the end, it's truly a matter of trying things out an enjoying that process, and maybe you will be amazed by how you start loving something you didn't liked before (true story here with coloured pencils 🙂) Also, brands like Faber Castell also have budget pencils that are great, like the Black Edition ones, and honestly, I prefer to buy these because you can be sure that they will be the same over the years, and not like we saw with the Arteza ones.

I love the Black edition. In germany many artists hate them. I can't understand. I live how soft they are, they are pigmented and you can layer them with 5 or more layers when you have the right paper. They Mix verry good. In my minf they are a cheep Version of the polychromos.

I ordered Prismacolor brand pencils of an online website. The container they came in looked exactly like the ones being sold at my local art supply store. The pencils turned out to be counterfeit ones. The labels on each pencil were not the embossed type seen on the individual pencils sold locally & in fact could be rubbed off the barrels. I really learned a lot about the terminology being used from your video. Thank you so much.

I was wondering if this was the case with budget pencils. They all look so similar. I do commission work so I use Poly, Luminance, and derwent LF. But when it's time to relax, I break our my coloring books (love kirby) and my Prismas... can't beat those colors (but their LF ratings go a little south...but hey, their price reflects that)! I've never bought a budget set as being able to buy openv stock is important to me.

Thanks for taking the time to make this well informed video. I try to stick to the well known name brands so I don't buy the same pencils but I do love budget pencils. I have the brutfuner and I love them but just bought the shuttle art too. I also have the schiferr Farber which I love too, primacolor and Farber Castell and tend to use Brutfuner the most. I have a few other budget pencils that are getting dusty like Crayola, Thorton's and another name I can't remember but I like having many sets to play with depending on what I'm doing. It's nice to have many to pick from but I can't imagine having the same pencils over and over again and not realizing it. Thanks for a well informed video. I really appreciate you, and your time making a video.

A lot of these budget pencils are being private labeled by a manufacturer in China. I’ve worked being the scenes of the beauty industry and private labeling works the same in all industries. So what these companies are doing is some of them are getting their pencils from a manufacturer and then they stamp their name on it, change the packaging and change the barrels slightly and then call it their own. However even if lets say I’m the manufacturer and the company coming to me wants to add en extra 10 pencils they can do that. A company can also charge more than what I sell them for simply because of their popularity. The only thing they can’t do is change the ingredients of the product. My theory is soucolor, kalour, brutfuner, starjoy etc are using the same manufacturer just changing a few things around to make them seem slightly different which they are doing a bad job at it too cause if you look at the print they look identical. So they didn’t bother to change the print of the pencils because it costs more to do that. The more you customize and change your product the more they charge you. Private labeling is not illegal however I wish some brands would be more honest on what their doing. This is why I don’t buy any art supplies that do not offer open stock. Your better of saving your money and spending it on items you can get open stock on. And more often then not if a company offers open stock that usually means they own a factory. I hope that explains how private labeling works.

The main information that I care about is - are the colours exactly the same. Like your video about Shuttle Art 174 vs Brutfuner 180 are the same colours/pigment/number/core size/core content/wood casing of pencil and varnish on the outside of the pencil, which was a big yes, except the Brutfuners had six extra pencils. So... in that case, I would buy only need to buy one of those brands. That's useful information because who wants to end up with both, especially if one's significantly more expensive than the other one. And analysing the pencil, which I do with fairly detailed colour charts etc is not something that I want to have to do twice, as I take ages doing that. So there's that too. And storage, paying for an extra pencil holder case or whatever is an issue as well. What I would like to know is okay if you've got say the Brutfuner 180 round shape, black coloured barrel, then you don't need to buy the following: Shuttle Art 174, Castle Art (?), Wanshui, etc etc. But what you just said about the square Brutfuner 120's being quite different to the Brutfuner 180's - that is good to know. So yeah, I'd like to know which brands are exact, especially in colour because sometimes those budget sets will have one or two... absolutely fabulous, knock down gorgeous colour which you can't get anywhere else. And sometimes the next batch of that brand and supposedly same product as you bought before are the same and you go yay to grab that really fabulously, elsewhere unattainable pencil and 😕 it's not there as they've changed one or two of their pencils that are the said to be the same product. That is another problem. Don't get too stuck on one particular colour in the budget sets because they change. Whereas with brands like Prismacolor, Faber-Castell Polychromos (I knew "poly" means more than one cos of the whole monogamy vs polygamy issue 😄), Holbeins etc, you know what you're going to get. And that if you follow a tutorial that says "now take your Parrot Green (or whatever colour) and colour this part here like so" and it is one of the major brands - tutorials normally use Prismacolors with the occasional Polychromo - you know the colour/consistency/result the tutor is using is exactly the same as the tool you're using. So yeah, a list of the exact budget pencils that are exactly the same would be good. Because by the time you've bought all of these exactly the same pencils but different name budget pencils, it would have cost you less in the long run to just buy the damn Faber-Castell Polychromos. But the Polychromos and Prismas (I find) are a bit lacking in... a lot of those really vibrant/highly pigmented pencils you find in some of the large budget sets. For example, my favourite colours are Blue-Green and Violet. FC Polychromos have about... one, maybe two in the Blue-Greens, whereas I want about four or five of the Blue-Greens and at least ten Violets or something. And yes I know that you can sit there and combine pencils to make the exact colour you want, but especially if it's a tertiary colour, if there are pencils on the market that do contain more complex colours that have already been mixed and created by professionals (we hope) and they're done very well, then I'd rather just have those actual colours than spend a long time creating them from scratch. Maybe for learning purposes, it might be helpful to create your own colour wheel just using the primaries to improve your blending/layering etc, but otherwise... we could also spin our own yarn and churn our own butter 🧈 , you know? I like those large budget sets that have a lot of vibrant/bright colours, although I've only been doing coloured pencils for about a year and sometimes I think that maybe just always going for all the brights can be too easily eye-pleasing than learning how to use the less vibrant/toned/earth colours in a way that looks extremely good. I go back and forth on that one. So yeah, a list of the exact same budget pencils would be useful. I think, anyway. You are so funny, I really like your videos! 😄 And very informative, eg the 152 Crayolas. I wouldn't have known about that one if I hadn't watched your clip on it 💘 from Australia 🌷

Great video! Back when this whole adult coloring craze began colored pencil makers could see that the KZfaq influencers were talking about how a colorist would need FC Polychromos pencils to get great results. Even Prismas were snubbed because the point was always breaking. Producers latched on the tern "oil based" and ran with it. "Oil based" = Polychromos ($$$) = must have to unlock the key to great coloring. So, label your pencils oil based and colorists would flock to the next ($) big box thinking they're getting something just as good as ($$$) pencils. Just watching people swatch out their latest ($) find a viewer can see the waxy shine and difficulty in multi layering. Other than the HERO/GuangHui pencils I haven't purchased another big box set and haven't been tempted to either. 🎨♿👵 Barb N.

There is also a difference between an artist selling their art and a colorist coloring for the joy of coloring. Artists ( which I am not BTW) know their product and are quite loyal to their tools due to lightfastness etc. Coloring for joy in a book kept in a drawer for me it's the ease of the pencil that matters. If I sharpen more than I color I don't enjoy the item. And do I need 120 colors? Look at your set. I bet you use 20 colors if that. So maybe some just enjoy the collecting or even hoarding? I have the prismacolor 150 set I got a great deal on and I bet 20 at most are touched and once 1 has broken 1000 times and ground down the next color works.

Let’s all be honest... In budget pencil world oil vs wax doesn’t really make a difference. I LOVE budget pencils but most of these pencils don’t reach Prisma or FC standards. It’s just a case of ‘buy them and try them out for yourself and see if they work for your coloring style’. I also wish people would stop being so focused on that. Now another question is how many of those black barreled pencils are the same thing except all privately labeled.

Ok here’s my rant because I have a love hate relationship with amazon. Ask yourself where you can buy these pencils & you’ll have your answer. Can you buy ANY of the brands profiled here anywhere but amazon (or eBay or Walmart Online)? No. The manufacturer was trying to play word games. They’re the same pencil. They’re the same formula. Made in the same factory. They basically produce a bunch of the same product & sell it at super low cost to other companies who will put the designs & names on the pencils. I’ve never tried them because I don’t tend to buy pencils that pop onto the market out of nowhere & have hundreds of positive reviews within a few days. Amazon has become the place to go for cheap Chinese made products. And that’s what these are. When something gains popularity like adult coloring you can always expect companies to exploit it for money. It’s easy to tell when you’re working with a wax pencil. After enough layers you’ll start to notice a cloudy coating on top of your work. Ultimately paper can only take so many layers so a with a good quality wax pencil it won’t matter much. Chris Chen does amazing work with prismas, I learned to color following her color alongs mostly. If you’re a hobby colorist I suggest Arteza. If you can afford it, Black Widow has an amazing backstory but they’re too soft for me (I’m a little heavy handed). However at the end of the day you’re gonna save yourself a lot of time & money sticking with prismacolors since you can buy them open stock. Save up for polychromos if you love to color. They’re a lot of fun and great for portraits. That’s my 3 cents (since it was such a long comment 2 cents wouldn’t do).

I did my own research when deciding on a budget friendly colored pencil, I have prismacolor but I wanted a budget set for more learning purpose and use on backgrounds and different things I don't want to use my prismas with, just personal choice. When deciding on pencil I have ran into a few youtube videos like this showing how they are the same. I have no problem with that, it's buying from a manufacturing plant and putting a label on it, OK, it's business. What I care about is, is it good, will the suit my need. But I also wanted to know can I buy it anywhere other than Amazon. Out of all these companies that have the same pencil, I found only 2 with their own website, brutfuner and castle art. I went then by quality of website and which felt like an actual company and which one I felt comfortable purchasing from. In the end I chose castle art, website was more inviting and comfortable than brutfuner. From art I see they all have good reviews because they are the same pencils, so I picked one and I absolutely love them, no need to get any others, 1 is good. I almost went with arteza but castle art is what got me in the end lol, so in the end, does it really matter, if it does to you then don't buy, to me it don't because I'm still learning, I can't purchase a 2 or 300 set to just be learning on lol. So it comes down to personal choice and how you use them, high end or budget friendly. When I learn more, I'm sure I will get better ones

Great Video!! I feel the same way. I love so many budget pencils. Every pencil is unique, and the question should be are these softcore or a hard lead. Or does the pencil keep a good point. I also think pencils are totally a personal preference. And paper makes a huge difference. I recently discovered I am loving the faber castell Goldfaber pencils in the nice little town cheap books. The lay down is awesome on that amazon paper. Thanks for the great video!

If they're actually different pencils, theyre unique, but a LOT of companies slap their name and packaging on the exact same pencils, made using the exact same recipe at the exact same manufacturer. That being said, some of the pencils from China really are pretty decent. Just for the sake of my wallet/bank account though, I've decided I'll probably just stick with brands that are tried and true, as long as they don't alter their recipe and manufacturing process too much. I would love to try every colored pencil out there, but if I do that, I'm just never going to have any money. 😂 I LOVE Goldfabers too. They're amazing!

I have a problem with this because there is more than 1 manufacturer in China for colored pencils to start. Second, the problems your seeing with many budget colored pencils out there is what's called white labeling just as you see with alcohol markers. A company decides they want to produce a colored pencil so they contact China & rather than produce their own lead they just decide they want their own packaging so they design the outside of the box with very little changes to the pencils & they pick their colors from a list of available colors from the manufacturer. There are companies that create their own formula of lead like Castle Art they DO NOT use Star Joy lead nor do they use the same wood (which is another option you can choose from the manufacturer). The oil verses wax the 2 BIGGEST concerns between the 2 is 1. artists who need to create details and work with a lot of layers need a firm core, dryer base lead & 2. They want their work to last because wax based will bloom over time fading developing a film over it ruining hours of hard work & someone's beautiful keepsake. If you are just coloring or don't care about it lasting over 10-20+ years then just look for a pencil that suits your style like if you are heavy handed or if you prefer a soft pencil.

Thank you for an informative video, just what we need. But I wonder how all these sellers are going to compete when they´re all selling the same pencils? How are they going to motivate customers to buy 120 pencil set for $46,50 when you get a 180 set for $26,58 and the pencils are exactly the same. IMO they can no longer compete with quality of the pencils, at least not those black ones that all look the same, only way now is to sell at a lower price.

I don’t know whether you weren’t showing the rest of their answers or what, but you showed a single answer that said they got their lead from the same place castle art did. What they did not say (unless you kept that part from us but that would be weird since it was the whole point of the video) was that every single Chinese based colored pencil manufacturer was using the same lead from the same manufacturer. But you kept saying that that’s what iOS answer was, so I’m confused! And if that were the case x none of your “now important “ questions would be relevant either! If it’s the same exact lead then the answer to all of your questions would be the same answer. I’m also sure you’re aware now that castle art specifically has their Gold line that is oil based. From tests I saw done with them, it’s clear they have less oil/more wax than polychromos, but are definitely more oily than the soft touch ones. Also who the hell told you “poly”meant oil??😂 did they never go to geometry class and learn about polygons? Oil-gons? 😂 oil-hedrons?

What you are describing is the process of so-called "whitelabeling" A manufacturer makes a product without any name or brand to it and companies can buy said product and label it themselves. In your example, we know for certain that the lead, so the product that actually colors is the same with Castle Art and Star-Joy, which does not mean that other brands use the same lead manufacturer. Brutfuner for example (talking about the square ones) are legitimate oil based colored pencils. It might very well be, that multiple known companies out there use the same manufacturer for their leads as the mentioned two brands, but we do not know that for certain unless they'd tell us.

It’s all to do with white branding. A factory producing a pencil which companies have their own name printed on and have their own design put on the packaging. In other words yes they are the same just labelled differently so if you buy two boxes of pencils that look the same the chanc S are they are from the same factory.

One thing I'm interested in, which rarely seems to get mentioned in reviews is how well do the pencils sharpen. Are there issues with the leads being off-centre, like prismacolor or the wood splitting like crayola? Do you have an opinion on which of your budget pencils seem to hold up best?
@sheshechic
@sheshechic 3 жыл бұрын
Sharpening is about the sharpness of the blade. Problems with off centered leads, or split wood is a manufacturing defect. A reputable manufacturer will replace defective merchandise. Nearly all manufacturers have produced defective pencils. The reputable ones replace them. Some sellers of knockoff pencils will too. When that happens to them too often, you'll see the pencils disappear. The problem is that they will reappear with a new name, but the same issues.
@abbasgirl74
@abbasgirl74 3 жыл бұрын
@@sheshechic Unfortunately people are accepting this as normal now. This is a known issue with crayola and prismacolor. I still have some of the old prismacolor pencils that were made by berol and they did not have this issue. When I was a kid, crayola made quality products, but they've gone noticeably downhill over the years. Having a sharp blade can help, but it's an issue with the quality of the pencil and not all pencils have it, including some of the less expensive ones. Since the person who posted the video has a wide selection of pencils, I was asking her if she's noticed some that are better than others.
@sheshechic
@sheshechic 3 жыл бұрын
@@abbasgirl74 I do understand. My point is that not all Prismacolor, Crayola, or any other pencils have that problem inherently it is a manufacturing defect. So asking the question or reporting how well a pencil sharpens doesn't yield any information about the pencils since not all will be problematic where sharpening is concerned. Not every Prismacolor or Crayola pencil breaks when sharpened. I have two sets of Crayola that never had that problem. Also, I've never owned a set of Prismas, nor bought individuals, where every single pencil had breaking issues. In my case, breaking has seemed to be limited to certain colors. So, I don't know if there's a problem with a formula, or a batch. If all of the pencils are off center, or broken inside, and if replaced, the same was still true, I'd stay away from those pencils. Manufacturing problems happen with all things. This is why I think the more important piece of information is whether the manufacturer/seller will replace them without hassle. Someone reporting that they had sharpening issues, when I know nothing about their knowledge or sharpener, tells me nothing really. Pencils whose points break when applying pressure is a different matter altogether and some people, especially newbies, will report that as breaking issues. If made clear, that could be more valuable information that reported sharpening problems. I hope you understand my point.

I am finally buying a 12-pack of Polychromos this weekend, to limit myself to a small palette and learn more layering. From what I hear, those should last me til the end of time, as slowing as they wear down and don't break. I am venturing into learning more about drawing and painting, as well as shading.

Like makeup or skincare products Bath and body works are kinda blatant, but they know that all they have to do is change name and bottle or in this case tin cove they will make money off of it and our mind plays trick on us. If I looks different then it must be so. In our minds it will seem like it performs differently or smell different but it's the exact same product. It's all a mind game. Not saying the product is bad, I absolutely love my Arteza color pencils. I will continue to buy them, why spend more when you dont have to. Maybe someday I'll invest in higher quality pencils but for now I just dont have a need to.

I will not buy Chinese made colored pencils because I require lightfastness in my pencils because I create art and don't just color in books.

Do the cheap Chinese pencils fade though? They are not light-fast are they?

Hello, thank you for your amazing video! I’m searching for some Prismacolor alternatives. Would you recomment the Brutfuner flower box (180 cp’s) or the Star Joy (gold edition)? Or another brand? Thank you!!

So are the Deli pencils made by same factory as StarJoy and Castle Arts?

They all use the same lead supplier in China. Different factories.

Hi people. Could someone answer me this!!!! What can we do to prevent the writing on the colored pencils to fade away? I have some Prismacolors that I can't see the name or number cause is all faded. Some still have a long life ahead of them, so I taped a little paper with the number on it so I'll know which one Im using. But what can I do to prevent the rest from fading?!... This has happened with some of my Prismacolors, BUT WITH ALL MY DELIS..... and I love my Delis but now I can see the numbers and they look so sad! Anyone has any ideas to prevent this fading from happening?! Maybe a little clear nail barnish?! Or would that ruin the wood?! Help please.

Clear nail polish or clear tape should work.

Wax is actually softer (prismacolor) hard to keep a point. Oil is firmer. Prisma will have a whitish wax bloom afterwards that needs to be wiped off. Also, lightfastness is important if you are doing paid work. You want the work to last for years and years.

I bought 120 square brutfuner and have no intention of buying another big set.. 120 is waaay more than enough for me, except for the skin colour. Never enough..
