On June 16, 2013, the idol of Maa Dhari Devi was removed from its original location and shifted to another site to facilitate the construction of a dam. Just a few hours after the idol was moved, heavy rain and flooding hit the Kedarnath valley. and washed away the whole town near the shrine and caused the deaths of hundreds of people. The flood also badly damaged five districts in Uttarakhand. People who live there and those who worship the goddess believe that the bad flood happened because the goddess was angry. She was moved from her original abode to make space for the dam. Something similar happened in 1882 when a local king moved the idol, and that also led to a terrible landslide that destroyed Kedarnath Town. Goddess Dhari Devi is revered as the guardian goddess of mountains and pilgrims and is also known as the "Protector of the Char Dhams" in Uttarakhand. I am from Uttarakhand. And let me explain this devi Dhari devi. Dhari is the self appointment gurdian of 4 char dhams(of uttarakhand). She was a small dark complexioned girl who was considered inauspicious by her 7 brothers. Brothers feared dhari will cause their deaths. So the eldest one took her to this river and beheaded her their. But she returned as a Devi for protection. Head is where this temple is and the body is in Maithana Temple. Both are worshipped in Uttarakhand. Thanks😊 Edit: There are more such amazing local dieties of Uttarakhand like Golju Devta, Rathi Raja, Ghantakaran. The deities are also very interesting in Uttarakhand than rest Northern India. Please watch 'Jagars' a practice in Uttarakhand to invoke deities and 'Mandan' to invoke our ancestors. Almost all local deities are connected to Lord Shiva and Shakti(called Nanda Devi in the state). We also have aachri(fairies) Loks, gateway to Swarga. It is said Our Swarga is closer to Uttarakhand terrains. There is so much to discover in terms of mysticism but most tourists don't explore it. Sad.

Me nd my family were there in kedharnath when this incident happened... Its a thriller experience really very hard moments... Thank you Lord Shiva for helping us to stay alive... hara hara maha deva 🙏 We prayed Lord kedharnath at noon nd return back at eve... Tat night flood occured more than a week we stayed in Gowrikund without any facilities... including water nd food... But God helped us in many aspects... Unforgettable moments... Now also I am very eager to visit Kedharnath again 😊

I am in Mangalore and few months back I visited Kateel devi temple. She looks so lively and temple is beautiful. One more scripture about it is one night a beggar family came to temple and asked for food. There was no food and priest told as such. Next day, they asked family to come as would be hungry whole night but they said one girl gave them food already in night. Every one came to know that it was Kateel devi and as they took it as her wish. Till now, they keep on serving food to every one who wish to eat and so far no one has returned empty stomach. As you know ancient temples have ashtadhatu yantras placed in the garba griha which is basically the energy center. They displaced the yantra even though warnings were given to the administration before and during the construction of Alaknanda Dam resulting in the devastating flood.

Not offending you, but from a logical and a scientific point of you, Every God loves their Devotees and they don't want them to suffer especially the naive and pure, honest people. Then why did Ma Durga led to such calamities by which the Pure, Loyal and truthful devotees suffered and Die. Why would a God lead to such disasters where the victims suffer but not the perpetrator, is this justice. And building of a dam fastens the development and makes life better for many does Maa durga don't want this is she against the development. Our sages studied and discovered so many things documented in Granth-sanhitas which are guidelines and tools to be used, strictly aligned with nature. So the action will ultimately get it's due reaction by nature. Idols are called Yantrika or yantra, which means devices these are tantric devices manufactured using certain energy to perform specific tasks. So the idol might have been placed there for a reason and removing it caused some disturbance ecosystem which is already quite fragile resulting in floods and all. This is my take if flood was really caused after moving idol.

There has to be a proper ritual performed before removing any idol from their original places .After Pooja and "jaagar" for days we pray to seek their permission and then only the places are changed. We humans tend to ignore these kinds of facts and take them as mere theories and hence the consequences. We should always respect our culture and our idols.

While totally agreeing with what you said, we also need to understand that Hindu temples are consecrated places. The forces of nature are locked there by mantras and rituals for the benefit of all living beings. So, any disturbance in those places would invite terrible repercussions. Sanatana Dharma is called so for a reason. Follow the rituals set by our sages and gurus diligently to live a good life here.

You are right but the flood was nit from the kedernath. They let go some water from the dam which cause the water level high and due to river level suddenly being high, pujari didn't had a chance to properly do the rituals and puja and had to remove maa from the temple.

Yes i agree. U should never move idols from their place. I learnt it the hard way. I moved my home temple from one room to another and massive misfortune befalled me. I had a huge financial loss within two days of doing so. 😢 I had to return the temple back to the original place . I have though not gotten back any of the lost money, but I hope no more troubles will happen

Due to damming, transitory lakes got formed, due to cracks in these lakes, the transitory lakes created a flash flood. The sediments associated with it activated new channels along with the original abandoned channels, the flash flood along with the poorly evaluated sediments caused the phenomenon, and it didn't happen because of moving some statues lol.

Idol is just an artificial replication of the real thing. So it's an idol not diety. The real diety can come upon that idol in the temple that represents that diety and give blessings when you call upon it. Makes sence now?

He is right the then UPA government did this for construction of the dam even when there were protest against this move by many revered saints also there is a rumor that the government allegedly gave poison to kill a saint who was leading the protest to curb the rising protest. Seriously now moving murtis are causing floods? The kedarnath flooding was a disaster which experts knew will happen. Cloudburts are anatural and common phenomenon over high alt. And rampant construction, pollution (of plastic), and construction resulted in erosion and loosening of top soil, this caused siltation and the river basin was raised. But the volume of water flowing will not automatically reduce. We humans very easilyblamenature or god for wrongs we do with nature. This channel is now spreading such pseudo reasons is just disappointing. We are at a juncture where people think climate change is punishment from god and that god will improve the situation in some time. This is utterly shameful. But to completely sideline the impact for which many ecologists were requesting to consider is an insult not just to their work but to sanatan dharm, which was in consonance with nature and which worshipped the nature. The warnings about flooding was given way before the happening of the incident and same repeated itself in HP this year. If we take mother nature who is worshipped in sanatan dharma, she will show us how small we our. Hindus continue to pollute rivers and holy places in the name of dharma without knowing what real dharma is. You think that our devi will be happy in not removing her statur but polluting the world she created.

Completely agree with your point of view but no matter how much disciplined we live, we are still going to face global warming or other repercussions coz earth has its own heating and cooling period, where it will go into ice age stage or become a ball of fire that's ment to happen no matter what... Also it would not be the first time, for centuries our earth has been into heating period and ice age 100s of times before... (u can google it) That's the rule of nature, nothing is permanent Coming back to the flooding... Well... As u mentioned the warning for floods was already announced wayyyy before then how come the floods happened exactly after the idol was moved. The idol was specifically there for "protection" of that particular region. We are facing global warming past many years but why the flood happened exactly after moving the idol. Science is great, but we must accept the fact there are things beyond science and human understanding.

Dhari devi temple was not moved on a single day the deconstruction of the temple began way earlier last phase was to pick up the idol and shift . Godess was tolerating for sone time until the audacity of the people and finally she burst with rage.
