Today, we find out how to make a homemade Leyden Jar and what happens when you touch it! Curious how to make a capacitor? TKOR shows you EVERYTHING you need to know how to make static electricity in a jar!
Making one of these leyden jars is just awesome! That’s all there is to it. This electricity project is as super easy as it looks, but ONLY if you avoid the mistakes and follow the instructions we highlight in the video. This is perfect for those wanting to know how to make a homemade capacitor, how to make static electricity, how to store electricity, store lightning in a jar, how to construct a layden jar, and many more!
If you want to try something new and creative or just a simple weekend project such as: creating lightning, electricity hacks, lightning experiment, electric science, survival hacks, lightning reactions, or STEM projects...watch the video to learn more.

When I was in highschool my science/physics teacher had a hand crank Van Dr Graaff generator. So I went online and stumbled upon the Leyden jar being used to store power from the Van Dr Graff. So I made a dry version from a 5 gallon bucket, aluminum foil on the inside and outside walls and a small chain attached to the lid that ran to the foil coated bottom. I brought it into class to find out that even after charging it, I thought I discharged it, and like 5 hours later after school was released, I went to the classroom to bring the Leyden bucket home. I accidentally touched both ends of the buckets contacts and found out that it was capable of holding a charge powerful enough to make me see a flash of white over 5 hours after initially being charged.

Apparently classic Tupperware tubs work really well for Leyden jars. PET plastic in drink bottles is slightly porous, so unless it has been kept dry for days, it conducts a very small charge through the walls. The soft plastic in classic Tupperware has similar characteristics to the insulation on electrical wires and is not porous. Also, most of the foil with insulation tape reduces charge loss, and any area you intend on touching needs to be in the middle, not on an edge, as sharp edges release static charge. (That's why lightning rods are pointy.) Another tip, use a piece of copper wire instead of a galvanised iron nail. Copper conducts electricity better, and loop to top end over so there are no sharp ends. Swap the paper for a piece of nylon, polyester, or silk, and if you don't squeal from the shock after following those tips, there's something wrong with you.

I didn't have a pvc tube, but I do have a makeshift plasma cutter that I made from a plasma lighter. It's really weak but I thought it would be enough to charge the Leyden jar. Then I saw the second half of the video and my hopes and dreams were shattered :P

I built Leyden Jars from empty fish food containers when I was 10, though I preferred a dry jar with foil on both the inside and outside of the jar to these wet ones, simply because they were so much lighter so it made it easier to transport my collection of 20+ jars. I have a few tips here: 1. always ground the outer foil when charging it, it makes it easier to build up a charge 2. when discharging larger Leyden Jars ALWAYS USE A TOOL, myself I used a bent paper clip to complete the circuit 3. Rather than using a frictional device like PVC pipe to charge the Leyden Jar, might I suggest building an electrophorus, for an easy start, or going with something like a Wimshurst machine if you want to go full tilt (as I did), if you want to go down the path of awesome whimsy you could build a version of Lord Kelvin's Thunderstorm, that might be right up your alley.

Love the video! I've been watching the King of Random for a VERY long time. But if I'm not mistaken, the plasma globe gives off an alternating current, so the capacitor would be continually charging and discharging, preventing it from actually building up any charge. You should hook it up to a car battery or Van de Graaff machine instead (since they give off a direct current), and then discharge it with something like a paper clip (or a lightbulb!)

Cool fun video mate! I appreciate the ac comment and rectifier solution but you could also create a spark gap from the ac output which converts it to pulsed dc I think ! Somebody correct this if it's wrong.

Do another video with more people and do some fun experiments. First, touch the foil, then hold person 2's hand, get person 2 to hold the hand of person 3 and then shake person 3's hand. Then try to charge it using a DC volt (thanks to ElectroBOOM's comment about the DC current), you can find DC adapters everywhere. Then try to light up an LED, and then burn out an LED (you're going to need to touch the foil, aka ground, touch the long leg of the LED with the same hand, then touch the short leg of the LED to the nail). Maybe make multiple jars, charger them all up, and then have some fun with them? Include the multiple people in this activity?

Did dat as kid with slide by going down and getting static. I think static electricity is different from the plasma globe so can be held be the capacitor

The difference is the plasma lamp uses ac and not dc.

Static electricity is electrons being separated from their atoms by friction so Nate is basically dumping the spare electrons into the water.

The problem with the plasma ball is that the output is AC. Try the rectified HV output of a flyback transformer from an old CRT monitor. From personal experience, it will give you much more of a charge then you will ever expect!
@PunakiviAddikti
@PunakiviAddikti 4 жыл бұрын
Don't screw around with the flyback transformer of a CRT TV. There's even a warning on that rubber cap that covers the connector to the tube. Touch that output wire and you're dead.

Definitely try charging it with a couple of 9 volt's in series. Also try out different electrolytes to see how they affect the capacitance. (a dilute acid maybe?)

Have you tried making a battery by wiring several laden jars together? Ben Franklin did that. In fact he adapted the term battery from it's mitilary description for a group of cannons when describing a group of laden jars wired together.

I would always go with a group of friends to are playground at are school on person would hold a metal pole one person would stand next to the slide everybody held pinkies and the last person would rub their hand against the slide, and shock everyone by touching the person next to the slide.

The other method is having some aluminum foil in the bottle, so wider neck bottle is better for that, then use long nail or small chain to contact the foil. Works just as well and you eliminate the corrosion issue of salt water on the metal rod.
