Shocking VR Locomotion Breakthroughs for Star Citizen
Star Citizen VR is coming, but there's a few things that need a solution first. VR locomotion has never had an immersive one-size-fits-all people and scenarios device or software, but Disney may have figured it out. Disney's Holotile, the EXIT SUIT, OWO Skin, & Bifrost Pulse may all figure into providing the next level of VR immersion.

Like most of us, I'm looking forward to release of SQ42. As a single person, more on the rails, complete game will it be VR friendly? Using Virtual Desktop and the 'Reality Mixer' app, (£9 on Steam), can we use HOTAS and a tablet for Game Glass whilst enjoying the game in VR? I hope ur planning to test my good sir. :)

It's a well-realized world, but I think vrchat is much closer to the oasis. It's much more "be who you want" and "visit any type of world" like the oasis. Star citizen is very much one type of self-contained world.

That Disney treadmill tile thing looks nice, but that exoskeleton thing, damn that is what I want to see evolved. It simulates walking, EVA, and supports you like a seat when you are sitting in your game. You do need full virtual controls for your ship however.

I would be in the 3rd camp. In games like no mans sky, I play standing up with motion controllers, and when I get into my ship I walk over and sit down in my cockpit (still using motion controllers since NMS doesnt support HoTAS unfortunately). This is ideally how I'd want to play star citizen in VR. But I could understand if they decide not to go full motion controls (for even on foot) I could settle for gamepad on foot.

What I do know is that elite dangerous uses a keyboard or a game pad to allow you to key bind certain controls, I don't know but I have a big hunch that they will include keyboard controls as part of the immersion because you can't bind everything to a quest controller or an index controller. Being real here they might need you to even buy special hardware like their own controllers if they ever made them that has all the features on them. I'm talking out my ass but you know what I mean. I love your videos man the insights are very appreciated.

Any time I have mentioned this in the official SC forums, I get roasted, so maybe I'll try here.....so SC had VR support for awhile already. This was sometime around 2013? Nothing out of the ordinary needed for a good immersive VR experience.

i saw disneys tile floor but i never even thought of the possibility of doing standing stuff then sitting down in a chair all seamlessly. i feel like THAT would be the best of both worlds. though, the floor would have to be big enough to carry you AND your entire desk/chair/pc so it could put it in front of you when youre ready to sit down. because lets say your desk is on the north side of the tile floor but when you walk onto your ship in game and are facing the cockpit, youre facing south. you could simplify it to JUST a chair, but then you arent using your hotas for flying.

Something to keep in mind; If you look closely, the holotiles are embedded in the floor, so it is unclear how "thick" the device is. You can by the floor lip around the outer tile borders and there is no power cord visible so there has to be stuff under not seen. It may not be a commercially viable product. The design is simple though. Basically a ton of old school mouse balls with something controlling them underneath.

Long term I'm definitely hoping for full haptic suits that suspend you off the ground and can simulate standing, sitting, running, swimming, whatever else. Like the HaptX guys were making, haven't heard from them in a while Short term though what I'd really love is just standard smooth locomotion, and to be able to manually interact with cockpit controls. Like how No Man's Sky VR does it but with the depth of SC. And I've got hopium to spare that's the way they'll go with the "interactive cockpit" stuff they've been showing off, flippin switches pushin buttons, it could be, right?

If you look at the advancements that the Apple Vision Pro has shown in terms of room mapping awareness its quite good already! You can already walk around in passthrough in the AVP and its really good. I think early integrations will surely be done with a kind of ghosting effect that allows you to see the IRL object/seat/cockpit you are sitting in for safety reasons and to minimize loss of immersion but transitioning between seated positions to standing and walking on a omni treadmill type surface like the Holotiles (how the FUCK do those things work!? lmao :) ) will pose challenges that are think are pretty solvable.

I worked at a VR arcade for a few years, and my headset is in my closet. My Tobii though, gets daily use. The reason is ease of use and not having anything on my face, glasses are OK too. For me to play SC in VR, they would need to take advantage of headset tech that does not exist yet regardless of the type of locomotion used. On locomotion tech, the amount I have to walk and run in SC... I am not going to daily drive a treadmill when I can just sit on my ass lol. It's a fun idea, but end of the day I am gonna take the path of least resistance you know?
@DigThat32
@DigThat32 5 ай бұрын
lol I'm sure most folks will prefer to be seated along w/ya. My Vive has been boxed up forever, my Quest 2 didn't see a lot of use, but the Quest 3's passthrough changes the game since you don't have to take it on & off to see around you.
@WigganNuG
@WigganNuG 5 ай бұрын
for sure comfort is an issue, but I suspect once they get the tech just a bit lighter than the Quest 3 and with a good headstrap, MOST actual gamers would be ok with the weight when properly distributed. As far as running in VR, no doubt a combo of stick / seated FPS locomotion would be used to traverse longer walks, but you would def be wanting to go old school laser tag style of game play that MOST of us have tried in real life. just think of it that way. A LOT of gameplay is flying and chilling on longer QT jumps so there will be down time. Im used to playing literally sweaty VR games like POP1 and before Meta nuked it, Echo Arena! Those games get you sweating and you love it! You might think people will all be lazy asses, but you just cant beat the thrill of a good old fashioned paintball / laser tag fight.
@bearcommando
@bearcommando 5 ай бұрын
@@WigganNuGI worked at a VR arcade for a few years and watched people from all walks of life use VR. End of the day people take the path of least resistance when it comes to daily driving a game, and VR with treadmills/walking tiles etc is not low resistance (even from a cost/space in your house kinda perspective). Especially a game like SC that a lot of us fire up after a long workday, that involves stupid amounts of running over long distances, even just getting from habs to hangar. You can enjoy your physical action and VR locomotion, but the reality is you're going to get beat by someone with a keyboard and mouse pretty handily. In a VR game where everyone has the same interface that does not really matter. When you play those games, are you using a treadmill or standing in place and using a stick or other method to move? Playing an average Vr game for 30 minutes with only tracking head and hands is enough to get most people sweating. I don't imagine it would be too fun having to physically run away from a hostile situation planetside in SC only to get winded and killed because of it. If that's what you enjoy, you do you, but I think folks that like to get physically exercising during a Star Citizen sessions are probably few and far between (insert joke about sweaty PvP players lol). I think SC will be great in VR, but I doubt locomotion via actually taking steps with your legs will be something most players will use. Time will tell though, the tech has a long way to go.
@WigganNuG
@WigganNuG 5 ай бұрын
@@bearcommando all good points. But I think people are who they are which is to say; folks who are not into physical activity IRL will probably not be into VR "sports"/"fps". This was true for most Echo player; they were often young guys who play basketball in football in school. And if you think about it, there is MUCH more friction in getting yourself over to the local courts to meet your buds for a pickup game. In VR, its literally right there in your house and the friction is potentially a LOT lower. Also, there will no doubt be running/jumping multipliers in VR locomotion where a light jog will result in sprinting of your avatar in VR. As far as who beats who from a PVP perspective, you're right that traditional pancake M&Keyboard players would beat VR players. But VR play will tend to be for pilots, exploration and the many different non-PVP FPS professions and gameplay loops with light ground based PvE.
@bearcommando
@bearcommando 5 ай бұрын
@@WigganNuGLess friction than actual exercise? Not with a cost of min 1-2k. Yeah if you have money it may be less friction than going outside, but it's still more than gaming normally or just getting a membership at the Y...and that's what really matters. I don't care who you are, humans take the path of least resistance. This stuff sounds great for like a week, then ends up in the corner/closet. Expensive VR stuff that takes up space in your house and needs a powerful PC, and that is too much hassle for the average Citizen. You didn't answer my question, do you play on a treadmill in VR or use analog joystick or something else for movement? I am genuinely curious if you use these systems currently.

at this point i just hope in any sort of implementation, even the most basic one like in cockpit only (in the elite way for example). it would be more than enough for me since i play it like that yet with vorpx but performance and the experience itself are at the limit of what is considered playable. they said some sort of vr implementation would be discussed and added after vulcan implementation, now vulcan is here and i really really hope they will bring back vr, even just a little bit. but they said a lot of things already and we're still waiting

You completely missed what's under the tiles. there is a massive block under it that wont fit in normal homes.... and the space available is less then half the distance across.... this is still a very long way off any kind of consumer product. that being said, it's definitely innovative by spinning the tiles then tilting them to provide movement, that's never been done before and has a much faster response.

i was expecting the Disney omni treadmill have the ability to rise up each individual roller so that it could take the shape of a chair that you could then sit down on and any time a game senses a close chair near you, it would rise up and form into the chair that you are looking at. so the floor basically materialize the chair in the exact spot/orientation as it does in the vr space. to me, that would be way cooler and possible more safe than putting a chair on rollers, for the chair to get stuck on something and fall over right when you sit down lol. if the rollers arose into the shape of seat, then you could essentially simulate any chair shape (including motorcycle/horse saddle posed applications). now idk how comfortable something like this would be (especially the saddle pose) but pair this with the idea of placing a chair on the rollers (instead of a chair) you just place a cushion/pill and the rollers could just move that pillow around to the position you want to sit and when you walk over to a chair, the game could make the rollers move the cushion over to where the chair is at in the vr space, then materialize the chair and when you sit down, it is a cushioned comfortable experience.

WOW! 😆 Yeah that'd DEFINITELY be cooler. Prolly need a swarm of nanobots or some holodeck-level tech but it'd be insane to have...til the robots revolt.
@MidnightWolfSDJ
@MidnightWolfSDJ 5 ай бұрын
@@DigThat32 nah it wouldn’t need nano bots. The way each roller is designed it looks like a pillar could arise where the roller is. So each individual roller could rise up into a pillar to make the shape of any virtual surface you want it to simulate. No nanobots needed for this tech.

@@DigThat32 a good analogy I have is, you know that toy that has a bunch of plastic pegs and plexiglass to stop the pegs from sliding out. And you place your hand where the pegs are able to make contact with your hand. The pegs naturally conform to the shape of your hand on the plexiglass view of the toy. Same kind of idea but on a much larger scale. Like imagine an entire room with these omnidirectional pegs. And say you want to simulate a building. Well the pegs only have to simulate what you can reach out and touch anything away from reach doesn’t have to be simulate. You could walk around on the pegs and they keep you roughly in the same place. You walk up to a wall in game and the pegs rise up in front of you so that if you reach out your hand it will hit solid wall if you are close enough in the virtual space to touch it. If you want to get even fancier with it, for doors they could be up like walls, but when you open the door in the virtual space, the pegs drop at the same width as the door. Or it could rise up and form stairs. And now you have elevation changes (the omnidirectional parts would probably have to shut off if you have to walk up the stairs for safety reasons, but then when you reach the top of the stairs then the pegs all flatten out and now you are walking on a plane as opposed to steps.

I really enjoy No Man's Sky in VR. While it's a much simpler game, it deals with tansitioning between walking, jetpack boosting and operating vehicles very well. FPS combat in SC is much more intensive and involving than NMS, but I think it's just a matter of clever, intuititive controls. I'm REALLY looking forward to SC in VR, but that's a lot further down the road. It WILL ruin my life though, lol

I say users will need all the options. halo port is for people who get sick same like snap turning, also alot of people will not have the budget for halo tiles even if it was to come out at a revealment time and be easy to clean all that dirt out of it kinda like a old ball mouse. personally I want my index controllers. fbt would be cool but not needed.

Only problem with the Disney floor is all the tech you need to hide underneath those rollers. There is a reason why it's on a platform. So you either need to be planning it in when constructing your home or need a room with a really high ceiling. And then there will be the price of it. There are 2 motors for every roller one to turn it and one to tilt it. And I'll bet you there are at least 20 under each foot. Let's not start to talk about software and structural parts because they will be ballooning the price to.

you can already sit and stand in most vr games, you just adjust your settings in options or realign your view. all they need to do is tie it in to a button configuration combination, like hold x press start. there really isnt a need to jump and kneel, but there isnt an end all be all, and none of them that i can think of are entirely exclusive. for me, i would prefer to remain mostly seated. you will definitely need to play with the motion controls though (if you dont have a flight stick). I recently tried out no mans sky in vr, i had never passed the first base building quest so i decided to revist it, started over and played in vr to about the same point and it was pretty cool. using the quest3 controllers to fly the ship was pretty awesome though very difficult due to the complexity of turning your wrist to rotate your craft while trying to rotate the ship forward or backward in order to turn mixed with the sensitivity of the gyro motion. it was rad, but super hard for me personally. i didnt check to see if i could adjust the settings i just dealt with it for a little while. it was pretty rad though. star citizen in vr would be pretty awesome, i mean... once its actually a finished and polished game. but by then, we will already have full neural implants and wont need the vr headsets. or the flight sticks. or computer monitors. or haptics.

I HAD to pause in the first 10 seconds to say this, Star Citizen WILL NOT BE PLAYABLE IN VR ANYTIME SOON! We currently can't even hold 45 fps when a server is full on a basic 1080p resolution. If I want to play in 4k, I can watch a single CPU core stay pinned at 100% and hold a measly 25 fps. I know people with top end hardware, Thousands of dollars on just the tower, also can't hold 60 fps. Star Citizen needs completely new servers for any VR to become viable
