So how do the Bilstein 5100s stack up against the Old Man Emu Nitrochargers?

Not everybody needs to spend five grand on suspension just to have a little fun four-wheeling. In a lot of cases, a well-made strut and shock paired with a solid set of coils are all you need to get a little extra height for better ground clearance, larger tires, or compensate for any constant additional weight you have on your rig.

I have OME springs and shocks on both my Jeep and my truck. I use my Frontier PRO4X to tow a 2,000 lb tear-drop on moderate trails. OEM makes the rear 1" higher then the front, which enables the truck to set level when towing (289lb tung weight). Both the springs and shocks are VERY durable - had them for years!

Solid comparison and I do agree they are both really similar. Another thing is the OMEs are prone to surface rusting. I’ve ridden 100k miles in each. I loved the 5100s as a leveling kit but then i lifted with a full OME setup. The OMEs are prone to rust and I plan on upgrading to 6112s or Fox 2.0s in the future

I currently have 5100s on top perch with stock springs on my 02 TUNDRA 2WD Access Cab. What would be the difference / advantage for me to upgrade to the 5100/OME spring combo? Which combo gives you the best travel range? I want to maintain a 3" lift. Thank you for the great video!
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Жыл бұрын
Stock springs on an 02 anything will be quite worn and probably sagged out. If you went to a new spring like the OME, it would likely be immediately firmer and better handling in the front, some people may call it too firm though. Running a lift spring on the Bilstein at stock setting would allow the max amount of travel in the suspension, since you're not running on top of a pre-loaded factory coil spring.

I have a question for you experts in the 4x4 sector! (and I would like to know if you can tell me if it is true that the ironman nitro gas shock absorbers go well with the original set-up and can be adapted with the +5? I have a Suzuki jimny 4x4 with m13a 1.3 l petrol engine with shock absorbers and standard settings, yesterday afternoon I picked up the new ironman nitro gas shock absorbers and the 4x4 spare parts dealer in Florence told me that these ironman nitro gas shock absorbers are ok for 4x4 off-road vehicles with stock trim or in a second you could put the springs higher and it becomes a +5 high trim is that true? Greetings from Florence Italy!)
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 10 ай бұрын
It depends on what +5 means. It would be pretty much impossible for a shock to work at stock height and 5 inches of lift, especially on something that runs as short of a shock as a Jimny or Samurai, but if it is 5 cm, that sounds about right.

I have a heavier metal rear bumper on my 07 fj, the front is all stock and probably will stay that way, can I get a medium spring setup with the stiffer valving shocks from ome and keep a decent ride? It has a pro comp 3 inch lift on it right now, and I absolutely hate that lift. It raised the front like 5 inches, and I go through inner cv axle boots like crazy, and the ride is very stiff. I would like a better ride, but still on the firm side while not being super harsh and from what I can find, It seems like ome medium springs with the stiffer shock, could be what I want. I would appreciate a second opinion if u have time cause I'm not sure if a light load emu spring up front would be too soft? Also, I would say ita 90% on road, 10 % off road

I'm not an expert on Toyotas, but here's my opinion: Unless you want to do a diff drop (which is mostly aesthetic because it negates clearance), do not lift more than 2.5". And spacers are a waste of money. If you want an affordable upgrade, get the Bilstein 5100s or OMEs (you can reuse the factory springs) and a set of replacement UCAS. Your CV angles will be just fine, and you won't worry about doing any crazy damage to the rest of the vehicle that you can't fix later.

I’m caught between two views! I have a 2012 FJ Trail Teams Special Edition with factory Bilstein 5100s. I’ve added steel bumpers, a winch, and RCI steel skid plates with original intentions to upgrade the suspension with Bilstein 6100s in the front with Bilstein 5160s in the rear. However, after speaking with a renowned overlander and lift specialist in the Midwest, he’s recommending OMEs. Please advise
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 5 ай бұрын
These OME Nitrochargers do not even begin to compete with the Bilstein 6112s and 5160s so if they are recommending those as an alternative over the Bilsteins, they are definitely reaching a bit to say the least, however they did just release their MT64 line that is certainly a closer competitor to the Bilsteins. We have not had the pleasure of testing them yet, but from what we have seen they are definitely a great alternative for sure.

Usually we find the Bilsteins to be a little softer. The OMEs are generally optimized for at least some constant load and tend to run pretty firm because of it. So on the JK they don't use a strut or coilover. Well there is ways to doing a coilover conversion but that'll require more work and fine tuning. Jeep wrangles have a shock and spring that are independent form each other. Bilstein does offer a shock that would fit your 2.5" lift.

@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 5 ай бұрын
Those 4" drop bracket lift kits do make things a little difficult as you are either limited to retaining the spacer in the front and sticking with a 2" or smaller body strut like a Bilstein 5100 or going to a full length coilover which are few and far between. Sans trading it for a truck that has not had the crossmember cut for a lift already, the best solution for a matching set of shocks all around that rides better would be to run something like the Fox 2.0s. The front coilovers come preloaded for an additional inch of lift from the factory so if you want it to stay the same height when you slap the spacer on them you will want to throw them on a spring compressor to take out some preload, but after that, ride should be greatly improved. www.shocksurplus.com/products/fox-2-0-performance-series-coilovers-reservoir-shocks-set-for-2005-2019-toyota-tacoma-4wd-rwd-6-lug?variant=32323118301233

The adjustable Bilsteins you see in this video are only for vehicles that already have coil over strut suspension from the factory like a Tacoma, Tundra, or '96+ 4Runner. They do not have any vehicle specific shocks that would likely work within the lift range you will likely end up at with the OME springs, but since it has solid axles with leaf springs we should be able to get a universal 5125 shock with their 255/70 valving to work.
