Shockwaves of the Submarine Volcano in Tonga

2 жыл бұрын

The sound of the eruption was heard in many parts of the world. As far away as the US!
On Saturday, January15, the underwater volcano at Tonga erupted, about 65km north of the capital Nuku'alofa, triggering a tsunami that flooded Pacific coastlines from Japan to the US. It caused waves higher than a metre to crash into Tonga. Detailed information about its impact on Tonga is yet to emerge as communication remains cut off.
GOES satellite imagery captured the eruption of the underwater volcano early Saturday morning.
Tongans living overseas are facing an anxious wait for news of loved ones as the eruption cut the internet to Tonga. Even government websites and other official sources remained without any updates.
According to the Tonga Geological Services, the plumes of gas, smoke and ash pouring from the volcano reached 20km into the sky. About 100,000 Tongans living in the 170 scattered islands are advised to drink bottled water and wear masks, as the dust from the volcano could contaminate water supplies.
The shockwave generated by the massive volcanic eruption in Tonga was felt in many parts of the globe. In India, it was recorded in Chennai, which is located 12,000 km away from Tonga.
Down to Earth is Science and Environment fortnightly published by the Society for Environmental Communication, New Delhi. We publish news and analysis on issues that deal with sustainable development, which we scan through the eyes of science and environment.

I live on the island of Mauritius, it is found in the Indian Ocean. Near Australian. I can tell you, around 17hrs in the evening,the whole sky was red red red. Like blood. It was damn scary, i said to mom dad, now its end of the world. I never seen tne sky like this ever. Later on. I learnt it was because of the Tonga eruption volcano, when it erupted. I thought there was air pollution in the sky.

I'm on the Pacific coast near San Francisco. I sent texts to a friend (who also has insomnia) that morning around 3 am asking her, what are those weird faraway explosions? I just scrolled back and found the texts! I kept hearing the booms for more than half an hour, very faint but distinct. We do have kids around here who like playing with fireworks and of course it was only a couple of weeks after New Year's Eve, but they sounded different from fireworks. There was this sense of great distance, like much bigger explosions but much further away than the kids down the block. It was eerie. We couldn't figure it out. Now we know!

You have got to be careful with these clips. From what I can make out, there was a observing crew that saw the first eruption the day BEFORE the big one. The satellite image of the big explosion shows it covered the Tongan islands (Tonga is 40miles away), in about an hour, while the video of the sound of the explosion was Fiji some 450miles away. I can't imaging the sound of the explosion on Tonga being 1/10 of the distance. Any ship observing the volcano during the big explosion may not have survived. Also this talk about an underwater volcano, it wasn't underwater the day before, and whats left after the big one means it's underwater 'now', but was it underwater on Saturday? Usually, underwater eruptions tend to be subdude by the water above....

@islandsunset

No. When gasses like sulphur dioxide or various nitrogen based gases react with water in the atmosphere, they make acids like Sulphuric Acid, Nitric Acid and even Carbonic Acid. When the clouds that hold them opens or bursts, it comes down as rain. That rain is called Acid rain.

Your logic is wrong on so many levels. First of all, you are implying that we should help someone who is "like" us or "similar" to us. Secondly, most of the population probably speaks English. Does that make them an unofficial colony of Britain too, and Britain needs to send help? Just say, India is close by and should be one of the countries sending help. Let us all be Humans first.

The big, prehistoric Yellowstone eruption was a "flood basalt" eruption, so very thin, runny lava like the Hawaiian volcanoes - but the amount it spewed out was huge and (thankfully) unlike anything we've seen in recorded history. A literal flood of lava. And yes, many of these volcanoes can change the weather, like Tambora causing the "Year Without a Summer", and the horrible famine in 536 AD was probably due to a similar event. This Tonga volcano is still having wild effects on worldwide weather, 8 months later!
